That intro was for the 90’s kids, a few Hadoukens, shoryukens, and a good old Shun Goku Satsu was enough to take out our collective frustration on BMW’s design team. Now I think it’s safe to review the new #BMW iX xDrive 50!
It’s all of BMW’s latest tech crammed into one conceptual vehicle that you can actually buy - and it’s in the form of a luxurious and fast #SUV - but these are two of the last things most commonly attributable to the ultimate driving machine. Add the design and we have the ultimate trifecta of no-nos for the purists. Have they totally lost their minds, is the tech so good that you won’t care how it looks, Is Rory Reid really the only person in the world who thinks it’s good looking? Let’s find out!
The IX is actually really important for cars you’ll car very much about soon. It features the 5th Generation E Drive technology - and it’ll underpin cars like the future all electric 7 and 5 series too and is thus wholly modular. Firstly the body - it’s not based on an X5 or something, Rather it’s a unique aluminium space frame with a “Carbon Cage” with CFRP in the roof. sides and rear = intelligent material mix increasing rigidity and less weight.
The new 5th generation unit Combines electric motor, power electronics and transmission in one unit - this saves space and gives far improved power output given it’s size. Unlike most #EVs like the Taycan or Mercedes models which use the same basic principle of Permanently Excited Electric Motors - The Motor in the IX is different. Its an electrically excited motor instead, so doesn’t require rare earths in order to use magnets. BMW say that it also has very high power density.
Our xDrive 50 has two motors in the front and rear, all feeding a single speed transmission, which sits in that same housing. And has a 105KW battery at the heart. All of that leads to Electric all wheel drive - fully variable power transmission. The rest is standard fare with - Double wishbone front, 5 link rear axle and our xDrive 50 getting adaptive suspension with two axle air suspension, Dampers controlled at each wheel. And finally, 4 wheel steering standard on the xDrive 50.
Performance and range are impressive. The normal iX 40 does 264 miles quoted, and 326BHP, but only charges up to 150kw in speed. The xDrive 50 has a 105KW battery which gives 380 miles claimed, in reality still a massive 320 miles as tested by me. It also feels massively fast with “Just” 523hp and a 0-60 of 4.5 secs. It charges faster up to 200kw too.
A BMW M iX M60 with 619 BHP and sprint of 3.8 secs will also come, but we will see if it’s needed.
The iNext concept previewed the marmite design, at almost 5 meters long, and 2 meters wide. It’s said to be a sign post for the future. More like a giant lighted billboard! CD aero value is good for a huge lego block, it’s 0.25. I think you can blame a lot of the shape on aero, and need to house batteries while giving big space.
The best part is the interior, with one of the best modern EV interiors I’ve seen! Big and easy to use touch screen, but also maintaining the iDrive knob to keep things safe. Huge space inside, but I was most happy about the SOUND of the car, playing when you turn it on and off as well as driving - courtesy of Hans Zimmer. It’s a really important car for BMW, as the i7 takes much from it as will future cars. Let's see how it does!

The intro betrays my VFX origins! As a kid, I used to make fighting games on the MUGEN PC game engine, fan games. Mostly Dragonball Z, but also some Street Fighter and KOF. 👊🔥 So cool to revisit it today!

Exactly. People are scared of sounding different these day. And that includes people making content. I think it looks great, there is not a bad angle on it. Sure, the grill is there, but it's not like in- your-face-there, like previous big grilled BMW's. And it sits nearly flush with the rest of the front. The car also benefits from the correct color combinations. If I had the cash, I'd buy the 50. I need comfort and space, not a supercar. The 50 is already overkill in performance, but offers the best range. Although I remember seeing another clip where a someone had actually more range on the M60 version. Might have been the wheel sizes, but the M60 would have been bigger, no?

It doesn’t look too bad if I look at it with my eyes closed. No, I’m not repeating what the last guy said. My view is 100% original. After 3 yrs, it is safe to say the majority of the car buying public strongly dislikes the design. Of course there are some who digs it but those are few and far between
That start was awesome. Epic execution of SF graphics while perfectly conveying our thoughts on BMW designs. 10/10!

What an awesome intro. Took me right back to my childhood and the local arcade.
I went on a road trip to Scotland in December and was surprised to see one of these on the road near Birmingham. It may have been a journalist. It looks a lot better on the road, especially from the front and rear 3/4 views. My bug bear is manufacturers who think it’s ok to make charging speed a spec thing. Speed, comfort, audio, battery size - sure, I understand that. But if you try to differentiate different spec levels with charging speeds, then I am out.

Batteries are often arranged in banks which are charged in parallel. More battery means more banks meaning more charged in parallel allowing them to accept higher power when charging.
Pretty cool. Saw one of these in person in black. Looked much better than the model x next to it Interior is lovely too
Perhaps the best IX review I’ve read… but I do like the exterior (even the front)…

Agree. Btw when you see it in person, it is reminiscent of a minivan with the exterior proportions and the floating center console and open floor in the front.

I love cars like Jaguar, Benz, Maserati, BMW, Porsche or Ferrari and a lot of manufacturers and old school cars from Britain and the States. For me the IX looks in real lufe stunning. I don't like SUVs but this crossover SUV is absolutely amazing. My opinion.

The looks dont bother me in the least and actually think it looks a bit mafioso to my taste. As a BMW buyer for some 20 years, I test drove this beast the other day and was absolutely blown away by the power and acceleration. So much fun! Will be picking mine up later this week

I test drove the base iX4 today. I walked away impressed. Look forward to driving the M Sport version and also the i4 M sport. I agree the interior on this is cool but the exterior design they could have done better. trying to hard to look quasi-futuristic. Just give me an X3 or X5 that is electric! I have an X5M which I love so just give me that with an electric power train too as an option.
Not sure if anyone else has pointed this out ( not looked through all comments ) however the best ‘ gadget ‘ in the iX is the sat nav which projects the actual road ahead at junctions etc via a front facing camera with fantastic graphics as your directional aids It’s incredible Can’t believe all manufacturers aren’t doing it

the other cool thing is in the heads up - if you are following a car , it shows you a car - if you're following a lorry , you see one in the graphics in the HUD .... if you're following someone on a pushbike, the HUD even shows you a little graphic of someone on a bike too !
I told you already, that I like your visual effect in the video, this to me street fighter!

Something interesting that you pointed out.Although most people aren't fans of this design, a lot of the elements like the front and rear headlights could translate very nicely to a more traditionally shaped saloon like the upcoming i5 or i7

I7 will be amazing with its new tech, the theatre screen, automatic doors, and host of new engines. The new 5 series too with a saloon design with a sloping roof line 🔥
The lights inside the bootlid are not some genius thought from BMW - they're a regulatory requirement (I think in US) so that the lights esp. the indicators, are visible when the bootlid is open...

I drove the iX 40 model a few months ago straight after driving a 545e. While the screens in the iX looked amazing, it just didn't feel as nice or as comfortable the 5 Series.
saw one of these on the back of a transport truck.. love the new stuff even if some of it looks off, the center air vent the rear bumper white car with better wheels it looks way better imo big fan thank you for your videos rokenr

@@Moscarblog The construction of the new Mercedes is awful. The first week I had it, it kept slipping from automatic into manual first gear on the highways. Gearing down at 70 miles per hour in highway traffic gets your attention fast! Tapping any hand gear should have quickly released the manual gear back to automatic. Nope! I had to get to the highway shoulder to turn the car off and restart. Mercedes of Asheville couldn’t find the problem. I’m not even convinced they believed me because they kept saying it was probably my fault. Finally, it stuck in manual gear permanently. They towed the car to the dealership, took the problem seriously, and took 3 weeks to fix it. Later, I drove over a speed bump and the coolant system fell down on the road. They had the nerve to ask if I had changed the bolts myself as if I wanted to be stuck in the country in freezing rain for 5 hours waiting for another Mercedes tow. They refused to admit to defective bolts so they charged me and my insurance for the fix. Apparently, the entire system falling off the car wasn’t “under Warrenty. I could write a book, but I feel “taken” by the car, the dealership, and even the manager. The dealership manager of Mercedes of Asheville called me screaming that I had better stay quiet about the car problems or he would refuse to service the car he sold me! I would have to drive 100 miles to get my PREPAID maintenance. That blackmail will only work while I have a Mercedes. I then actually called Mercedes USA to ask for help with this car that was in the shop more than in my garage. Mercedes USA apologized for my problems and sent me a coupon for $2,000 off on another Mercedes. Ah….NO THANKS! My BMW M550 is on order!

Interestingly BMW Sets often the Standard for Future Design...the X6 is an ugly Beast...but any OEM has now SUV Coupés

It's weird how design is so subjective as I really like the looks of the iX and the EQC, although I think the EQC looks are enhanced by the wheel design on the higher end models.

The only thing that I don't understand is when every car reviewer, complains about buttons being replaced with the home touch screen. I also find them buttons confusing in a running or moving car. I only wish that the artificial intelligence would improve so as to control everything without any struggle while moving. But then again most settings in a car are done or to be done while the car is not in motion.
