BMW F850GS Review Update - 30000 Miles - From a Real Owner

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Here's my BMW F850GS Review Update after 30,000 miles on this adventure motorcycle. What are the problems I've encountered? Do I still think it's worth the money? Would I buy another one?
Before I bought this motorcycle I researched other motorcycles like crazy. So, if you're looking at the Yamaha Tenere 700, The KTM 790 Adventure, honda Africa Twin, aprilia tuareg 660, Norden 901, the BMW 1250GS, Harley Davidson Pan America or other adventure motorcycles, than this F850GS review will help you see how this motorcycle is.
Check out the review I did at 10,000 Miles Here: • BMW F850GS Review From...
I've taken this bike all over the place since I purchased it. I've taken it on a 3500 mile trip touring, MABDR, NEBDR, Forest Roads, Sandy trails, Muddy trails, on the Tail of the Dragon, up the Blue Ridge Parkway, and all over Florida.

Hi, first of all you are the only person to do a proper review on this excellent machine objectively and after decent mileage. Many thanks! I recently swapped my 2022 R1250gs for a 2022 f850gs Rallye and have put around 5000km on it during the last 3 months including an onroad/offroad tour of Norway. I am seriously impressed and even though this is my first mid-size GS I have owned four of its big brothers (just for reference:). I agree 100% with everything you cover. What I would like to add is that its relatively high weight (on paper) is not the issue a lot of people are moaning about. Yes its a little bit top heavy at a stand still, but under way the kilos (pounds) disappear quite rapidly. After owning five GS's I'm left wondering whether the little beemer is the best? Right now, I think it probably is, but I'll wait to get some decent mileage (as you have done) before making my final verdict. Once again, many thanks for your great videos on this bike. Regards//Marc

Thanks for the great review! I had several bikes in the last 5 years, like the Yamaha XT1200, the Triumph Tiger 800a, a BMW R1200RS, a G650XCountry and now, since 1 year a 2020 F850GS Rallye. For me it’s the right compromise between All/offroads and sport/touringbikes. You can travel well on a larger distance with enough luggage possibilities and you can do adventureriding and light offroading in a very acceptable way! This one will stay!

First off: great video. In fact your whole series seems very well done: professional, concise, and well produced. I have a '22 F850GSA, and just did the front and rear Tractive Suspension upgrades over the winter (but have yet to be able to ride it due to late winter weather in the northeast bleeding over into early spring). Any chance that you could do a video review of just the Tractive Fork Cartridge, including any gouge you might have on different settings for different riding conditions? Near as I can tell, there aren't any F850-specific Tractive reviews here on KZread, and getting your insight on the upgrade after so many miles would be really enlightening. Keep up the fine work!

Great Video, thank you for the detailed issues description. I got a f850GS with Akrapovich exhaust and the same moth crash bars and skid plate. This is my set up from day one and I am feeling that there might be on the bike some "extra" vibration in the handle bar and left peg at high speed ( 90 mph ). I was wondering if it could come from the fact that the motech is anchored on the bike on the lower part of the engine as well as the top part on the frame bolt. Did you notice anything like that or a difference before and after putting the crash bar and/or with you new GS without the bars? I was mentioning the Akrapovic exhaust because you can feel that the bike sound way loader than a stock one and you can feel vibration in the handle bar while the bike is stopped ( nothing too bad of course but probably more than with a stock exhaust ). Cheers

This is a great review thanks! I myself own f850 adv 2019 and have done almost 20k km since I bought it new. I enjoyed so much however I’m not too keen anymore into bmws in general, my bike seem to have a common radiator leaking issue which as i’ve read others have had as well, I also saw some other issues melting glue coming from the tank, the tank lid sometimes doesn’t open. I live in Saudi Arabia, don’t know if this much heat this bike cannot handle, but it was designed to be a world tourer I guess?? Therefore it should handle the heat and the cold and all types of weather. I don’t believe I would buy another European bike again as it seems to be too much of drama for me especially coming from Kawasaki.

@@MotoTravelUSA hi thanks for taking the time to make this. Is it the extra 45lbs of the 1250 gs that you feel wouldn’t be good for what you want to do on the BDRs? Or something else, if so can you elaborate? If the weight then wouldn’t the cylinders sticking out actually make the 1250gs about the same or easier to pickup than a 850gs (heard that somewhere, haven’t lifted the 850 but it would be lower right? I ask as I’ve only done an off road training day and would be interested in doing the easier parts of the BDR routes, gravel roads and fire roads. Though most of my riding would be country back roads the majority of the time. Thanks!

I wondered if you'd considered the GSA before getting the rallye edition? I enjoy my rallye 2019, but do consider it a heavy old thing to push around in the garage and thus the bigger tank doesn't interest me much and I could strap a fuel bladder if needed. I don't think there's any one perfect bike, but this model suits me. I noticed you did the NE BDR, how was it with this bike? I'm considering it myself. The stock tires have been okay on really firm gravel and well maintained forest roads, but they don't have any grip on looser stuff. I just changed to the trailmax mission (my forth set) to do lots of off-road in a few weeks. Good luck with your bike man, it's a fun one.

It’s a great all around motorcycle for just about everything. With the different ride modes, traction control, and AB’s it can be beginner friendly. However, I would normally recommend getting a lighter bike for someone that has never ridden before to learn the nuances of riding. Something in the 250-500cc range is usually a great bike to start with. Although it is a catch 22 because you will want something more after riding a bit. The 850 can also be a bit tall for some people and they may not be able to flat foot at stops, which is an important consideration when starting out. Good luck and have fun with whatever decision you make!

If I was doing mostly long distance two up I'd probably opt for something with a little more power and a little bigger, although this is capable. Good luck with whatever bike you get.

Nice review, thanks. I plan to replace my '21 KTM 890 Adventure. I would love the KTM except for the horrid wind buffeting which makes me HATE it. It is the worst of any bike I have ever owned (I have only owned nine bikes and only have about 650,000 miles of riding time, so maybe I am too notice to judge the wind....) I am have been looking at mid-level replacements and there are a couple of the Triple Blacks available near me so I am seriously considering this swap very soon. However... I would like your opinion on wind buffeting. I do not want to make this mistake again. I agree with your comments about the weight and size for more off road trips BDR rides, etc. My current largest bike is the Pan America. I actually love this bike, except it has the worst headlights of any bike I have ever owned. The light just cannot be adjusted to feel comfortable at night above 40mph, and that is pathetic! I know, "do not ride at night" is the answer many tell me, but what kind of long trip rider always makes it to a hotel or camping spot, every day, before nightfall? Definitely not me. So I have been considering swapping both bikes for the 1250GSA but, as you said, the 850 just seems more practical. Okay, I wrote too much simply to ask about wind buffeting, but thanks for the answer and for the nice review of the 850.

🤔 that's a tough answer. I haven't ridden the 890, so I can't compare directly with it. I'd say try to test ride if you can, but here are my thoughts: I use to have touring screen on the f850gs to help with buffering, but I've been doing so much off road that it became a hassle to bring bothe screens, so I just use the stock OEM screen now. The OEM screen doesn't offer much wind protection at all, which I appreciate when ridding off-road. On the highway, which I've ridden a lot as well, it isn't terrible unless the wind is kicking up and passing 18 wheelers. Overall I've learned to live with it and take the good with the bad. It's not anymore than I've experienced on other bikes. Hope that helps and good luck with your choice.. lots of great options out there for sure.

@@MotoTravelUSA Thanks for the reply. I understand about the difference with on and off road. I obviously ride both (almost 4000 miles of only dirt on the Pan America). The KTM is so bad with wind that it makes my brain hurt after 30 minutes. I did not notice this on several test rides, so test rides seem to be a fail since I cannot find any shop that we allow me to ride long enough. I will see about renting one. I just noticed that there is very little weight difference between the 850 and 1250 - that surprised me.
