Adventure Shootout: BMW F850 GSA vs KTM 790 Adventure vs Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It’s been said dozens of times, many different ways. The definition of adventure is unique to the person defining it. Like fingerprints, no two answers will be identical. Case in point: the KTM Adventure 790 R, BMW F 850 GS Adventure, and Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. These bikes make up three-quarters of the burgeoning middleweight adventure category. These motorcycles comprise a niche within a popular category, yet within a few miles of riding each bike, it’s remarkable just how differently each brand approaches the task. The core philosophy of each marque shines through in these machines and plainly portrays how its part of the world, and the people riding there, define adventure.

As a completely satisfied owner of the KTM 790R, the best thing you can do for this bike is replace the Karoo 3 tires. They cause the vibration Eric talked about. I'm currently running the Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires and they are great on the street and have worked well in the mountains and in Death Valley. Cheers

Fanowater, clearly a true motorcyclist. One of the biggest factors affecting our riding is tyres, yet the discussions on these forums hardly mention them. On road it matters, but off road they can be the difference between an adventure and a mission. Good call.

I took my 2019 F850GSA on a 30,000km ride last year from Miami to Thailand through 17 countries. Awesome bike if your traveling 50% road and 50% off-road. None better. Why? If you do adventure travel, only one brand exists anywhere in the world when passing other riders; BMW. They never, ever break. Also, the ride is the best for comfort on long hauls which I do daily. I also own a 2018 R1200GSA which I took from top of South America to the very bottom on a 20,000km ride a few years back. But its a pig for off-road in some situations - so I bought the F850. For comfort, forget it... Review or not, the F850 on list list hands down the best of all -- not even in a discussion. For weight, its sucks if you plan on doing more than 50% off-road. In fact, I'm going on a ride from Europe to bottom of African Continent (South Africa) next year and I am seriously looking at the KTM 790 because I expect it to be 85% off-road and 15% tarmac. Bottom line: If you are a normal rider - not a Dakar want-to-be -- and don't plan on doing more than 50% off-road -- look no further than the BMW -- its the safest choice for safety, service, reliability, comfort and ride. If you plan on More off-road, or your the top 10% of riders who are super aggressive, I agree, the KTM is tasty.

In that case, they probably don't really discuss it in these comparison videos maybe due to the fact that that's a very in-depth subject and it's easier in a comparison video to just point out "x bike has adjustable suspension, but y bike doesn't", if you see what I mean. KTM and Yamaha are coming at the middleweight adventure bike (offroad biased) from two different aproaches. One expensive and high tech and one built for a price and low tech. That to me is a great thing as it gives potential purchasers a great choice. From what I've seen though the T7 suffers from poor suspension and lacks the ultimate power delivery of the 790. If truth be told the KTM has far to much power for use offroad and you can rework the T7s suspension and still have a fantastic bike for less money than the KTM. You'll just be lacking all the high tech the KTM comes with (TC, bluetooth, TFT, QS - optional etc) but that stuff is not for everyone anyway.

I'm not so sure how it would do. The Triumph Scramblers (Street & 1200) share two shortcomings as adventure bikes. First, luggage. So far, nobody has come up with a good option for dual bags. The second problem is the stance. The high pipe routing forces a weird bow legged stance on the bike, at least for me. I always feel like my right foot is about to slip off to the side because of the pressure from the pipe. Perhaps it bugs me so much because it's asymmetrical. The right leg is pushed, the left not.

I love these middleweight bikes.. I just go down dirt service roads & a lot of city/highway traveling so I actually got the '21 Africa twin AS w DCT transmission. I have my bike set up with full crash bars from alt-Rider & skid plate. I bet my 🏍️💨 is close to 600 lb combined with the full tank of ⛽ all the shit I've added + that automatic tranny 🤷🏼‍♂️ the good thing about it it's nice & protected, it's also very stable when you're out on the open road if it's windy or anything but when it's pretty windy I stay around 60-65 mph

As a big fan of BMW and riding a GS1200 and want to step up a lighter bike I must admit that that triumph tiger is a beautifull bike. The BMW is also a beauty but when I have to pay 17,5 k plus several 1000 euro's to adjust the suspension to have the bike riding as I like, then it will be a nogo. The Triumph will be the one for me commuting 110 miles a day to work. Hell even the KTM wich I am not a fan of, will be in my garage. Nice review and thanks.

My dream bike is the multistrada 950 I don't think I can ever justify the money. The f900xr is a good try but falls short in many ways only a twin, down on power. suspension is nowhere near as good. And the triumph would get left behind 95hp vs 115hp and the tiger has narrow tyres vs the other two. 100 front 150 rear the xr has 120 front 180 rear. Would all come down to price in the end. I think the rally version of the tiger is a better bike than the GT. I think for what it Is the F900xr is brilliant no other bike like this has ever been offered.

  • @asareeeric

Chris Redfield Thanks for a really good breakdown. I do indeed agree that the Multistrada is my dream bike as well. After doing the financial calculations for all three bike according to the specs I want, the Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro would set me back £12,800. While the BMW F900 XR TE would be £12,535 and the Ducati Multistrada 950 S will be £13,895. Based on pricing I want to know if the Ducati indeed is worth the extra £1360 more than the BMW. Also seem the BMW with the packs I’ve selected comes with more tech. The Tiger 900 is roughly£300 more expensive than the BMW, leavening me to wonder if the Triumph is to expensive for what it is or if it’s indeed justified?
