I had the same problem with a two year old fluid, always changed in the BMW workshop. They admitted that BMW has recently changed type of fluid and the problem shouldn't reoccur ... Thank you very much for your videos. I also then changed the fluid, with the traditional method, but without using Motoscan for now.

Had the same problem on my gsa f800 adventure and my mechanic said its moisture trapped and left sitting for long time makes it to split and set like slush... although I bought second hand from bmw garage amd I am not ruling out your conclusion on poor craft by authorised bmw dealer.. 🤪 thank you for your content 🙏

Hi Tata, I don't think its moisture because moisture makes the brake fluid brown. Just have a look at my playlist of the Honda CB500X, front brake fluid change. 😉👍🏻👊🏻🏍

I've always washed all the old crud and brake fluid out of the components with hot water. Since brake fluid is water soluble, cleaning with water and then blowing off the remaining residue with compressed air or wiping the water off of the components with a lint-free rag works like a charm. I've been doing this for over 45 years and have yet to experience any 'side-effects' from cleaning brake fluid with water. Just a suggestion......8^)

You can use a rubber band to pull the tabs to open the front reservoir.

Hello Old Mechanic, like your video’s, very useful info they provide. Now, brake fluid is very nasty stuff, handle with care. But more importantly, any DOT (3, 4, 5) brakefluid is HYGROSCOPIC!! This means it ATTRACKTS WATER(VAPOUR) FROM THE AIR!! That’s what you found under the black cap, and even worse, IN THE BRAKEFLUID, that’s the white sludge (milky) stuff. It is water (condensed water vapour) mixed with the brake fluid. Like you said: DO NOT MESS WITH YOUR BRAKES, SAFETY FIRST, ALWAYS!! Because, water in your braking system and not to mention, the (very fragile) ABS system, will give you problems later on 100%! The HEAT that the brakecalipers generate will create WATERVAPOUR in the brake system! Vapour (gas) is like compressable AIR which you don’t want in the brakelines or ABS-pump. TIP: buy a brake fluid tester online, which you can stick in the DOT4 fluid container, they are cheap and very easy to use.

Hello, the BMW manual would also provide for the caliper pistons to move back, probably to let out a greater quantity of old fluid. In your experience is this necessary? Thank you so much for your videos.

Great video, just having bought a 2017 F800R a few days ago and going through it piece by piece I discovered the custard looking stuff at the bottom of both my reservoirs despite it meant to have been serviced! I have cleaned them out and bled them, the rear took 2 seconds, but I think I am having trouble with the front. Could you please give me some advice? I have bled the front callipers a number of times, and I cannot see any bubbles, the lever moves about 25mm and then starts actuating the brake to the point where the wheel will not turn, so the brake seems to be working and the pressure seems to be there, BUT!, the lever can continue to be pulled back to just about touching the grip, is this normal on these bikes? I bled both nipples at once using a Y piece hose, ( I used to use it for Guzzi Brembos with 2 bleed screws on each calliper); in your video you do them separately, would I be better doing them separately, if so does it matter which side first? I am waiting for my Unicarscan 2100 to come and once that comes I will also do a ABS flush as you described, could that help clear out any bubbles which may be sitting somewhere in the system and possibly causing the lever to get pulled back so far? Thanks for your help.

I've just discovered your videos - I love them. A quick question on this brake topic- My bike fell over and broke the front brake lever housing, necessitating a replacement. Can I replace the assembly and bleed the front brake lines as you do above? OR- Since I opened the system before the ABS pump, will it have to be bled as well? I just ordered the Unicarscan and dongle. Can you briefly outline my process? I am hoping to get a few more rides in before the snow comes.

I had to SCRAPE the inside of the master cylinder reservoir because the BMW fluid had chrystalised. I wonder where else has chrystals stuck to it.

I had the same case with my brake fluid. For me, this milky sludge has almost become a solid, something like a shell of wax. I wonder what was the reason that something like this precipitated from DOT 4 fluid

@@oesda hmm then I think that you keep on pumping new brake fluid through the brake lines as there is an airbuble trapped somewhere. Try to hold your bike so that the trapped air will automaticly through the highest point. Sometimes I am busy an hour or 2 to ket all the air out. Besure to keep your reservoir filled, orelse you start to pump air in the system again. IF that don't work you need a vacuum pump Oscar. Keep me updated !
