The Old Mechanic

The Old Mechanic

I really enjoy doing motorcycle maintenance myself, for my own BMW R1200GS and for family.
Like a BMW S1000R, BMW F800GT.
I have been tinkering with motorcycles for over 40 years and I enjoy sharing my experiences and skills with other motorcyclists,
hence the name: The Old Mechanic .
I'll explain it to you in Jip and Janneke language, no nonsense, so you don't see blue latex gloves with me,
because I'm not afraid to get my hands 'dirty'.

Hi there The Old Mechanic! Thanks for this Video! I admittedly do have the GS-911 WiFi version with the Enthusiast license. We also have 3 BMWs in our family F650CS, F700GS, R1200 GSA -K25, so Enthusiast with 10 VINs is sufficient for my use I also have to admit that I have not experimented much with it, and also have not found many tutorials that promote its functionality..... A follow-up would be great!, I am hoping you might elaborate / highlight what features MOTOSCAN (Full version) has that the GS-911 does not please. And since starting to use MOTOSCAN and now also have the firmware upgradable UniCarScan UCSI-2100, do you ever still use your GS-911? Additionally, while I was looking for info, I found info that upgrade from Ultimate to Professional is apparently possible (not sure at what cost though...) "What's the difference between Pro and Enthusiast? The Pro version of the GS-911 has unlimited functionality, while the Enthusiast version is limited to 10 VINs (Vehicle Identification Numbers) for diagnostic functions. An Enthusiast version can be upgraded to a Pro using HEX's software, guide here." www.maverickdiagnostics.com/shop/am-tools/hex-gs-911/#:~:text=What's%20the%20difference%20between%20Pro,using%20HEX's%20software%2C%20guide%20here. www.hexcode.co.za/products/gs-911/support/faq/how-do-i-upgrade-to-the-professional-version Thanks again for all the great videos! Greetings to The Old Mechanic! I have watched many of your tutorials, and they have helped me tremendously while rebuilding my R1200 GSA (crashed it in Aug 2021) So thank you for you light hearted, funny yet super informative videos! All I watched have deservedly received a thumbs up from me! It was great to see this video with all the add-on's you have done to your 2010 R1200 GS! Of particular interest, to me are the following, I expect you are happy with the quality and if you are, I am sure I will be! and I am hoping you might share the exact part to search for and where you bought them from please. - The stainless bolts for the brakes, shocks & front engine cover (mine are corroded from standing outside) It was difficult to see in the video, are they Torx or allen (hex) key? - The end bar weights with the throttle grip resistor - Grip to assist for putting the bike on the main stand - The wider mirrors (I in any case have a broken one that I would need to replace, but the wider vision sound like great and now a good time to upgrade - Also the Strobe controller for the Brake light but that is already clear what to search for GS100a and already found it Best regards J

Hi. Thanks for your video. When your original tire pressure system just finishes its batteries, how do you deactivate it so the motorcycle doesn't warn you all the time? Is it possible to deactivate your OEM TPMS in a R1200GS LC 2018? Thanks again. Best regards.

I was thinking about buying a xcountry, but looking at this I'm having doubts if I can handle the maintenance. When even a simple oil change takes that much work and know how, I don't want to know how much it takes if something really breaks. I'm a bad mechanic so I guess I will stick with my bicyles, at least they don't need an oil change btw. thank you for those videos

I am awaiting this kit and found your video(s) on KZread. I want to thank you for the most detailed and informative way you produced them. You did everything I was thinking of doing and I found myself agreeing with almost every approach you took. I'm old as well, maybe that's why!😂 The beep does annoy me as well and I'm delighted to see that it is easily suppressed with a bit of electrical tape. I thought to do this or even open it up and cut the buzzer wire inside the unit but it looks like tape will work.😊 I am waiting on my unit being delivered but the detail in your excellent video has helped me plan the installation before it arrives. Keep up the good work! 👍

I had the same issue when I used Motoscan to recalibrate the idle actuators on a 2015 r nine t!! Don’t recalibrate just balance the throttle Bodies… The fix is too disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and then reconnect it, start the bike but DO NOT touch the throttle after a couple of minutes the bike rests the actuators and the tick over is back to normal😅!

Buongiorno vecchio meccanico, io mi chiamo Lucio, vivo in Italia, precisamente in Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Good morning old mechanic, my name is Lucio, I live in Italy, precisely in Friuli Venezia Giulia. I recently purchased a BMW G650X Country motorcycle (no ABS). The motorbike is from the year 2007, and has 16,000 kilometers under its belt. I am the second owner, when I brought it home, I replaced the tires, the brake fluid, the air filter, the engine oil with synthetic Motul 7100 15W50 (as described in the manual), and the air filter. 'oil, and the two spark plugs, with two equivalent to iridium. The thing that bothers me the most is the hardness of the clutch lever, and I'm always afraid that the rope might break. Is there a way to put a hydraulic clutch? Thank you very much for your response, and I congratulate you for the very useful videos. Best regards, Lucio Lorettu.

Hello! I'll write down if anyone has experienced this or can help me with the problem! We just came home this evening on the M7 motorway, yellow triangle lit up with LAMP fault indication but apparently everything worked on the engine. Then all of a sudden everything went black and my engine stopped while driving. Luckily we were able to roll into a petrol station but the light and dashboard light flashed several times. After stopping everything worked fine and after about 3km it started the same but I was able to start it while rolling. For the next 25km or so, until we got home, everything was working fine, no more faults. BMW F800 GT

Love your videos they've been so useful. Just went out in my garage for a quick chat and late night drink with my old GS. Talking about old rides in days gone by. We've been together for 24 years and the old girl's getting a bit of a makeover. Well a lot of a makeover actually. In talking to her saw that the dust seal at top of forks was split. Many years since I last took the forks out and I found this video and remembered it wasn't that difficult to take the forks out. Or at least you made it look easy! So on behalf of Big Gee and me, Thank you!!. Another new bit that'll make the old girl feel better.

Does the app cost money? And does the app work well? Because Amazon says this product has been frequently returned? I am looking for a Bluetooth battery tester like this that I can use by myself and crank the engine of a car without having to have a second person. Plus the app will save data so I can show the customers or text or email them.

If the engineers only once did the replacement job themselves, they would never design it like this. All sparks should be easy accessible. Without being obstructed by cable and hose clutter. Mine just got back from workplace for this job. I expected them to install iridium sparks, but they used the regular once that only last for 24000 km. Workshop argues iridiums are too expensive. But charging me 2 working hours. Spark plug cost is fraction of total labor cost. And iridiums last at least twice as long! Really hate them for installing inferior material.
