BMW F30 335i Auxiliary Radiator Replacement, Coolant Top Off, and Coolant System Bleed

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hey Everyone,
As noted in the video, I was driving down the road and I got a light no one wants to see... the low coolant light! So, I topped it off with a 50-50 mix of BMW coolant and distilled water, started it up and it was spraying out of my radiator like a super soaker!
Good thing it's an easy fix!

Great DIY, just my 2 cents here, since I've replaced the radiator on the E30 multiple times, always use the distilled water first, then check for leaks, cause man that BMW coolant is TOO expensive to risk a leak of coolant, I'd rather a leak of distilled water LOL

If I need to do a complete coolant flush, can I run the coolant pump without running the engine and suck out the old fluid from the overflow container as it collects in there and when complete add new 50/50 coolant to the overflow container? This would help me avoid removing the engine panel at the bottom and making a mess by taking out the coolant hose clip. Please advise. Of course I would have a battery charger connected to the battery terminals all the time during this procedure.

Hey mate so is this procedure of battery charger on ignition 2 position+low beam lights+hot air at level 1 valid of only F30s with an electric water pump? My F30 has a mechanical water pump and I want to change the coolant. Is all I need to remove lower radiator hose, get the old coolant out, clean reservoir, then add new 50/50 mix to reservoir, then turn the engine on and get the air out on idle (as we do at old cars) instead of on ignition with a batter charger is that right?

Thanks for doing a vid on this. THESE THINGS BUST ALL ALL THE F'ING TIME!!!! Some 328i cars (perhaps all the LCIs) have the same aux radiator (but on the OTHER side of the car) -- but the problem is worse due to the bumper design -- THERE'S NO FREAKING GRILL to prevent anything short the size of a GOLF BALL from busting your radiator out (with the standard bumper)!!! Absolutely infuriating, shit design, and totally foreseeable that this is going to get hit by rocks on the freeway. It's hard to believe they released the car with such an obvious design flaw. I took the bumper off and added a grill behind the bumper -- otherwise it's just a matter of time before it happens again. Cost me something like $750 to have the dealership replace this (and I put the grille in later). Totally sucks. BMW did not do their homework here -- it is dumb as shit not to put a grille down there. This isn't a huge issue with these cars, but it is not uncommon to see people complaining about it on the forums. Obviously, if you travel the freeway, your chances of having issues goes WAY up -- compared to someone who does mostly local / city driving. I had just started doing a bunch of freeway travel about 6 months prior to mine busting out. But hey, at least I'm not upset about it, or anything, right?!?!? LOL. This left me stranded, 30 miles from home, on a *90+ degree day*, and the dealership was a good 30 mins away (in the opposite direction) as well. Took virtually the entire day waiting for a tow truck, getting the car down to the dealership, and getting back home. THANKS for lacking any sort of common sense BMW!!!

I know this is old but my 2017 340ix msport's A/C stopped working. I finally tracked it to a loss of coolant in the front radiator from a pinhole, it honestly looked like a really hard insect body penetrated it. I'm guessing it only leaked when I was really getting on the car and the temps were high. 2018 models have a revised design that has a rock guard to protect the tubes and fins, so they knew about the problem. I ordered the new radiator, the revised brackets, and rock guard, $550. Keep an eye out if you get one in your shop. Not all 3 series have the same cooling system design, and AFAIK, they only implemented the rock guards for auto 340ix and 440ix cars that have msport package without msport brakes. Apparently other cars have that tiny aux radiator while the auto 340ix and 440ix have a larger aux rad the same size as the engine radiator.
