Quick fact, Chris Bangle came in before the e65 and e60, he helped design the e46. The reason for the dramatic difference is a change of BMW CEO which allowed Bangle to try new designs to modernize BMW

He also approved the E39 before introducing flame surfacing which was a completely different philosophy. It was an interesting era of BMW design, with the shape shifting Gina concept for example.

​@@Thesketchmonkey In my opinion E39 M5 is more beautifful then E60 M5 but E60 is way better car in every single way.

After owning 4 generations and 500,000+ miles of driving ///m5s, the two that are still in my garage are my e28m5 and 6MT e60m5. 13 years and 186,000 smiles of track days, getting groceries, and daily driving the v10, never gets old. Always felt the s62 in the e39 would run out of revs, when I drove it, versus the higher revving s85 e60. The v10 is only a money pit if you have no money to begin with 😂😂😂. Keep up with the maintenance and service items and get out and drive these thoroughbreds!

I’ve always liked the e60 more than the e39 looks wise 🤷🏻‍♂️ Chris Bangle is massively underrated, he’s incredibly talented and people still haven’t realized it

I think the best man to ask that is @M539Restorations. As he owns and fixed both the E39 and the E60, he has spent a lot of time, effort and money on both, and while he always said the E39 will be his all time favourite, he admitted that after experiencing the E60 as well, that he might like it a tiny bit better. That V10 is just such a unique experience. Personally, I can only tell from the outside, but I guess both are quite different in character, but follow the same idea. In terms of design, the E60 has definitiely aged far better as the E39 has a very oldschool, traditional style, while the E60's design on the inside AND outside was the starting point for modern design, for BMW, but also in general, as many elements proved to be successful choices still in use today. But the E39 is very beautiful as well, marking an end point of 20th century post war car development. I acutally really like that BMWs model history has this 'millennium step', where with the new times there was also this major change. It may divide BMW fans for eternity, but it also just fits the overall technological and visual revolution that took place around this time.

The E60 looks clumsy and weird compared to the older much sleaker BMW designs. Also the interior went downhill with the E60. Cheaper feeling and lost that driver oriented feel.

Maintain it and well and warm engine up well before you give it hell and it will be good for you...most people can not pay the money to maintain it or they can not do nothing on the car themselves..still they want a car like that

I was never a huge BMW fan but the E60/61 and especially the E63 grew a lot on me. It´s more the engine than anything tho. But I like the desing aswell. Love your video!

in terms of design for me the e39 is the goat, second is the f90 lci (the current m5) honestly it looks much better than the e60 and i see it being a classic in car design in 10 years or so

yes, yes,, the V10 was better, I still love my e64 M6 and will keep it forever.

E60 aged quite good. Especially with a modern headlight. Saw one and I went nuts. With paint correction it looks like it just rolled out of the factory. I'm waiting on the next gen 5 series. The current 5 series is also very beautiful.

Bangle was great, the E49 is partly his and that's one of the best looking 3 series ever. It's the 7 series that was the biggest issue, that thing is a pig from any angle, especially coming from the beautiful E38. The E60/61 is still beautiful today and the M5 is just aggressive enough while still being understated, pure BMW styling ethos.

The BMW M5 V10 e60 is underrated and under appreciated…

I'm glad you got to try both these iconic M5s. I also prefer the E39 design and V8. But it's so funny to see a car with a smile and eye lashes powered by a V10 500+ HP engine. Germans we're crazy back then. My favorite car era for sure.

Nice review, that engine sounds great, but the M5 E39 is still the king of the M5 in my opinion.

Ther was an E61 Touring🔥 The best M5 ever!

I don't really like BMWs desings from 2005-2007. But the V10 is awesome. E9x and E60 were very ugly until the facelifts, but the facelift models in M-sport trim do look really good, especially the E60, E61.

It looks good, even tho its 20 years old😀

design wise e39 clears, on paper the e60 is better, but that’s just expected, i still prefer E39 tbh

I have one with a six speed, i daily it and love the fuck out of it

Only an idiot would pick the E39. If both are in front of you and you have both keys, you'd need your head checked to not pick the V10. For the record I have had both and obviously LOVE the E39 but simply put it's second best. Money for me is also not a factor so couldn't care less about maintenance/running costs etc just purely about the cars 😎 V10 is V10.

I found it odd 20 years ago, I still find it odd today. It is mind-boggling how cheap the interior is

Yes! Reliable? No

In terms of driving, e60 is superior (especially if u got one without that SMG), however looks are important factor when it comes to luxury vehicles. Its not that (at least in m5 variant ) e60 is ugly, just previous generations had much better, one may say even - timeless design

Its a very special car. I owned two. But its fragile and anybody who says otherwise, well hmm. And if you take the plunge, very regular oil changes and FGs warm her up:). E 39 is a nicer car though. And has a far nicer interior. Like my dads old study.

The bangle era 5 series doesn’t bother me. Now the bangle era 7series is definitely an ugly duckling.

Fun fact: M5/6 owners don't drive SMG's like monkeys, or auto journalists do. You can disregard everything you hear on YT there is a reason 98% of the globe love and keep their SMG.

I still dont like the design.

I can't get my head around that BMW had the balls to introduce such a different design philosophy to a mass product as the bmw 5 series is. The sale numbers didn't disappoint. So hats off to bmw for their courage!
