For anyone who does this, please don't use the rear nipple. It does not supply enough vacuum to keep crank pressure low during heavy acceleration. If you use the rear port you will have oil leaks you never had before due to excessive pressure forming in the crankcase. Either drill and tap the nipple to accommodate a thread in 3/8 npt fitting or use one of the ports on the vacuum equalization rail on the top of the intake manifold. I hope this helps anyone who does this mod and prevents them from going through what I did. Cheers!

The way i did mine was do add a PVC valve from the hose leaving the catch can to the vacuum manifold distribution which in this video he capped off. Been running my setup for well over a year now with no issue, car runs strong and doesn't burn oil. I did have an issue with the dip stick tube leaking oil which I resolved by adding an additional O-ring to the tube.

Buying the CCV and replacing it, tried the catch can, blew out valve cover gasket. Flat bed home so I wouldn't have an exhaust fire $240..... Never had one oil leak on my 2001 X5, now spewing out the rear valve cover. I hope that's the only spot!! Hooked up the way suggested on here, using the vacuum port on the rear of the manifold, wished I would have just replaced the CCV now. Just as easy to do once all the parts are removed to install the catch can. The CCV's are only $40 on Amazon, including all the hoses!!! Ordering all the shit for that now plus new valve cover set etc etc etc... This cheap catch can is turning out to cost $$$$$$$$$ for my daily commuter. Again, knew the CCV was failing, my advice.... just change it. Same amount of work and you won't possibly blow out other shit!

Hey Nathan, hope you good! Im bit confused about catch can install on my e61 m54. You recommend port at the back of engine as vacuum is lighter. However some people think its not strong enough and in your comment section someone was complaining of blowing gaskets because of it. I know comment section is not best place to look for answers but it did get me confused. Im no expert just trying to find the right way as everyone is advising different approach! Thanks bro!

Since you videos are done on a bigger engine is there anything different you can think of that i would need to do? Also is there a way to do this without taking the intake manifold off? i dont mind just leaving the ccv system in there as long as it no longer opetational. Thank very much. Mark N

Hey Nathan so I went ahead and t'd off the vac line on the intake boot. I plugged the drain hose, and the hose on the intake (my intake only had one hose that needed plugging on the bottom??), and rerouted valve cover to intake boot. I did not remove the ccv from the car. I'm just wondering if it needs to be completely removed or if it's simply mounted to the block (do i need a blockoff?). The car is now leaking massive amounts of oil. I'm suspecting the dipstick tube (I used a very thin gasket from a littke o ring set thinking it would seal, ordered an oem gasket. ) but I'm just trying to make sure i cover all my bases before I take apart the intake again. Aside from that the car is running with no smoke.

I installed an Ebay catch can and I had nothing but problems. I connected the catch can to the distribution piece. There is a lot of vacuum to the point where the hose form the catch can to the distribution piece has oil. I added a PCV on the hose and was too restrictive, losing negative pressure in the crankcase. I saw your other video where you drilled a hole in the PCV. I removed the spring and piston from the PCV and the car runs better but, this morning on my way to work my idle dropped to 500rpm while at a stop light or stop sign. Do you think it's best to run the hose to the back of the intake rather than the distribution piece? Thanks in advance!

Drew Maximus Do not listen to this twat! More vacume is better. That rear nipple will not give enough vacume and will blow something guaranteed. This idiot does this rear nipple method on cars with oil leaks. I done the rear nipple method on car that had no oil leaks because i had replaced every oil gasket and seal and under WOT the rear nipple cant make enough vacume and the crank case will be pressrized and something will blow. Mine was rear main seal as all my other oil seal where tight. This guy wouldn't know because he does this on cars with oil leaks he already knows about so it wouldn't matter that he uses the rear nipple with not enough vacume because something is already blown. Thanks for fucking up my car Nathan you half job prick. I you actually foxed all the oil leaks on a car and tried the rear nipple you would have found out yourself and not fucked up peoples cars with this video you prick.

Drew Maximus This is what i should have done use top distribution as vacume and use as long a hose as possible so vacume will run up hill, so mount catch can down the front at bottom of engine bay by rad fan. I even made a hole in under tray to reach under and open the drain plug. no pcv required high crankcase vacume is good for the low tension bottom oil piston rings. up hill long vac pipe and wire wool in the catch can will keep the oil down. All good knowing this now but its to late as i listened to nathan in this stupid video and blew my rear main seal! you cunt

They are around $100 off ebay with the hoses, $160+ for the cold weather, most of the cars i get in its failed or failing, usually a unfixable lean code, or the intake is full of oil when you pull the disa out, if the diaphragm fails it will suck the oil out of your oil pan in about 30 minutes, alot of the time shops and dealerships will crack the new ccv upon install since its so thin in the middle, once you do the catch an it burns much cleaner and keeps the throttle body and icv clean im guessing you work at a shop ? If what is shop labor on replacing the ccv?

I was quoted $800 to replace the CCV system from an independent mechanic. That's good enough reason for me to consider it.

Or spend $15 more dollars and replace all the lines and hoses with factory stuff and it all works and looks as it should. you won't fail emissions and you won't have to worry about emptying a catch can, blowing seals and inadequate vacuum. No offence but this is not a quality repair IMHO.

Or just spend somewhere round $300 on two sets or piston rings so you get correct rings installed (#1 n #3 rings to be specific )and not worry bout any of these extra probs. The oil consumption prob will be handled ✌🏽

Yeah, but only God knows how long tearing the engine apart will take. Usually cheaper to deal with the ccv until the rings fail. Then you swap a different engine into the car lol

Gotta say, not a great tutorial. People are still confused because you dont tell us the size of anything except the 1” hose, you clamp against a threaded fitting which will definitely leak, and you dont show any steps being done except bolting the can together.

I'm trying to understand why you just don't spend 20 bucks on eBay and get a complete CCV kit and pop it on and be done with it for the rest of the life of a car? Not trying to b e a dick, just wonder if parts have become cheaper since this was created.

  • @NathansBMWWorkshop

Well because they are not $20, they are $38 for a china kit, $90 for a good oem, $800 for the dealer to do the job, most of the china ccv's go bad right way, most shops that try the install crack the ccv at the narrow spot in the middle, then you get random lean codes, the catch can is under $20 total cost and you can install it in 10 minutes, that is why this video exist.

peto22 BMW parts are expensive. You have to realize these are old clunkers. If you were going to repair everything with original and genuine parts, you might as well just go purchase a brand new car.

Genuine parts are expensive but I want that my old clunker is as reliable as possible... dunno how my 100-200$/a on original parts is equal to buy 50000$ new car.

peto22 You haven't fallen into a money pit yet it seems. It won't be just a couple hundred dollars in parts one time. Things will go wrong on your car continuously. Radiator here, sensor there. Each time you'll go and purchase oem parts from the manufacturer thinking it'll be the last repair. Then one day you decide to add it all up and realize that you could have leased a brand new car for what you spent repairing a clunker. The radiator on my Maxima went out. The dealership wanted between $700 to 800 for a genuine Nissan radiator ( just the radiator, not including hoses, coolant or installation). I bought an aftermarket one for $70 and installed it myself. Ditto for everything else that I've replaced (after I got wise).
