BMW E39 M5 S62 V8 Twin Electric Radiator Fan Conversion + Alloy Shroud Manufacture DIY How-To Guide

Welcome to another DIY How-To guide for your BMW E39 M5.
Today we will be showing you how to make an alloy radiator fan shroud and install 12" SPAL cooling fans.
I go in to detail about why you should NOT use cheap eBay fans and why you should spend a few quid extra and do the job right - I have done the research so you don't have to.
The conversion eliminates the OEM viscous fan and plastic fan shroud and replaces it with a super neat, efficient and high capacity twin electric cooling fan set up. This is a further development from my previous single 16" fan setup which I wasn't happy with.
Testing has proven this setup to be excellent at cooling the big V8 engine and keeping temperatures nice and low.
New BEHR radiator from Simon at www.c3bmw.co.uk
12" SPAL cooling fans from JJC Race and Rally
Sheet aluminium from Thealuminiumshop on eBay

Amazing job you did sir !! I did The same think to my 540 but i used fan from 2003 bmw 745Li because dose not have a brushes inside is completely different fan is controlled by PWM signal and will last forever then the regular fan with brushes .

Cheers Andy. I did look at using the PWM fan from another BMW, but decided I wanted to use the SPAL ones to give me a bit more clearance on the front fo the engine for when I'm working on it. Glad you enjoyed the video - it's great to know people are interested in what I get up to in the workshop.

Would you sell a kit for this car? or a premise shroud shroud? I can definitely get the rest done on.. it’s just folding that shroud and cutting it right..

How were you able to get the readout on your media center for coolant temperature And all that other data? Do you have any pictures of how you mounted the temperature sensor and relay? Awesome job mate! I will have to try this next weekend

Amazing job !!! Since the stock pin config is 3, and fan is controlled via PWM from the ECU, how did you get to switch the fan on when A/C needs it? i.e. idle, traffic lights waiting in hot etc.

Martin, cheers. The standard A/C pusher fan is still in place and runs as per OEM. The additional cooling fans are controlled by an adjustable temperature control panel within the vehicle.

@@WestinghouseProductions Thanks for your reply, mate. You are totally right, excuse me for my stupidity. I got caught by the fact that A/C fan should go because IC is coming in soon, so was looking for solution which would turn those fans on when need by the A/C also. Cheers

Hey Paul, my M5 is in good shape to begin with 37k miles, I just dropped a CSF radiator in my M5 with dual 12” spal puller fans. In theory car should run at normal temperature or cooler, I did the clutch delete to free up that parasitic drag from clutch fan and to avoid clutch fan failure and damage. However this is where I’m at on 86f ambient temperature in moderate traffic. Stock pusher fan works, puller fan works well pull hard, 180f on 165f off temp switch in bottom right of CSF radiator just above the return hose. The oil temp needle should be slightly to left of 210 not to right of 210 mark. Coolant temp in hidden menu is at 96c and oil temp temp is 104c, no warning lights or anything. Any advices or pointers? Greatly appreciated!

These cars run at 220 Fahrenheit, unless you change the thermostat. No matter how great of a rad and fan setup you have. Also oil will vary much further than coolant. Oil temp isn’t really a concern until about 230 Fahrenheit

Curious on how you used the DME signal for the fan wiring. No relays? My fan setup has a high and low setting (2 relays) and runs off a switch mount on the the side of my radiator. I feel as if it comes on at the last minute and not maintain the temp like yours coming on and off randomly before it gets that hot. I assume the wires you used are can bus on the switch side?

The electrical system uses a 200 amp relay to switch the fans. The control side is via an 86-81 celcius thermostatic switch which is housed in the silver switch housing unit in the lower radiator hose. If you wanted to utilise the PWM signal from the ECU that also controls the auxillary air conditioning fan, then SPAL sell a unit that you can use too. I opted for a mechanical switch for the moment and I'm happy with it's operation so far.

Would you make one kit for me? I will pay. My current setup is with one cheap ebay fan and I have overheating problems if I go WOT.

Hi Boris. Thank you for the offer, but I don't have the resources or time to put these to market. If you change your fan to a SPAL or Kenlow unit then that should assist in your issue, but if your engine is overheating when you are at WOT then there may be other issues with the cooling system that need addressing first.

How do the Fans work ? Where does the Power come from ? When do the Fans know when to turn on ??? Where comes the information for them to turn on ?

  • @MansurRami

The power comes from the battery terminal as seen in the video, this black box with a + on it. Thanks to the temperature sensors, the fans will know when to turn on. When the temperature for example reaches 89*C degrees the sensor will send a signal to the relay or whatever u have that controls it that later on turns on the fans.
