    THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS OUT THERE. MY X5 DIESEL 2014 NEEDS THE TIMING CHAIN REPLACED AT 120K MILES. THE BMW DEALERSHIP ESTIMATED ME FOR 14K TO DO. MY CONCERN IS THAT MY VEHICLE WAS VISITED FOR MAINTENANCE BY ONLY THE DEALERSHIP. ACCORDING TO AN OUTSIDE MECHANIC THAT SPECIALIZES ON BMW DIESEL, HE STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE OIL CHANGE WAS BEING REPLACED BY THE COMPUTER READOUT OF 10K MILES. IN ADDITION, THE STOP AND GO FEATURE CREATES TENSION TO THE TIMING CHAIN….LIKE HOW MUCH ARE YOU SAVING ON DIESEL FUEL WHEN CAR SHUT OFF FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS BEFORE IT TURNS ON TO PROCEED WITH DRIVING?? MY VEHICLE WILL BE FIXED AND WILL NOW GET OIL SERVICE EVERY 3,500 MILES.

    There are a few theories on the reason a cam chain is used there, another I'd heard was they're not supposed to wear out so won't need touching - on some cars this seems to be true, others, not so. Here in the UK, BMW have a big fleet market, companies who buy them as company cars for employees, so service costs are a consideration, and some believe BMW have been a little optimistic with the oil change intervals, the reduction in oil quality as it ages in the engine being a prime suspect in the early demise of these chains. As far as pedestrian safety goes, hey, if Charles Darwin and the Grim Reaper are helping someone across the road, why should the rest of us watch out for them?

    The first reason is true, in Europe, they have different safety standards that are different than in North America. As for the reduced stress on the chain drive, the transmission torque converter as a larger shock absorber. Still not an ideal place for a timing chain.

    @@mickeypopa both are common rail direct injection diesels with a fuel pump driven by the crankshaft, can you point out any fundamental differences in these two as to why the bmw could not have a set timing for it's pump? It makes sense to have one in order to eliminate pressure fluctuations in the system. Educate me then.

  • @mickeypopa

    @@Scouter98 You answered your own question, you just need to think about it a little rather than emotionally responding to me because my initial comment rubbed you the wrong way. Also, those similarities you listed are inconsequential to the topic at hand, all 3 of them. Common rail - irrelevant. Direct injection - irrelevant. Fuel pump driven by the crankshaft - irrelevant (and obvious as it's not going to be driven by gremlins). Once again, try to put your feelings towards BMW aside (as they're clearly negative, possibly from personal experience) and look at it from a standpoint of a car manufacturer with its own history and brand reputation.

    A truly dreadful design. I know. I have suffered the failure. No number of oil changes will correct the design faults. The real problem is one familiar to many countries. It is: "Not Invented Here". Thus, G.M. in the early thirties started using inverted tooth cam chains on their camshaft drives. Nearly all Japanese motorcycle and car engines use such a chain which is not generally prone to failure. But BMW? No. we did not invent it, so will not use it.

  • @mickeypopa

    @mickeypopa

    4 ай бұрын

    Any chain will stretch after long enough use when subjected to enormous mechanical stress, no matter the design. There's no getting around that, it's just a matter of time. You can however extend their life by regular oil changes at 10k kms or less and using premium engine oil.

    @@mickeypopa Yeah except when its done properly like a double roller chain mercedes had up until late 2000s when they started to do the same bullshit you see in bmw, making the chain out of chinesium and moving it to the back of the engine for who knows what reason. This is an embarrassing design failure, these days there are timing BELTS that outlast these chains. Planned obsolescence or what, i dont know, but there is no justifying N series chain issues.

  • @mickeypopa

    @mickeypopa

    @@Scouter98 Yeah I agree, planned obsolescence is definitely a thing but since we're aware of it we need to make sure to work around it and preemptively replace parts that are obsolete and also invest extra money to adhere to a strict maintenance schedule. I love my 2015 530d F10, I love how it looks, I love how it sounds, I love everything about it. And if that means spending extra money to keep it running smoothly - so be it. It's the cost I'm willing to pay. 🤷🏻‍♂️
