    For those who are interested in high performance composite structures...bmw is using dry or semi-prepreg ( only for compaction and debunking reasons) The layers have some form of resin mildly applied between the layers or on the layers of carbon fiber. It is preheated and pressed and trimmed to form the preform. Then the laminate stack ( perform part) is placed in a heated RTM mold where resin is injected into the fiber areas of the mold cavity. More than likely they use a snap-cure resin. The molds are pressed together under tons of pressure to seal the mold closed and prevent any resin from escaping since the resin is injected under high pressure into the laminate. Lamborghini uses the same process RTM to make monocoque chassis for its Aventador model. Boeing is also tied into Lamborghini as they share technology and they made and patented Forged Carbon* ( Lamborghini Trade Name)

    @@imestia7911 There are many factories making carbon fiber sheet. They look almost the same, higher quality are stronger. for F1, they use top of the line carbon fiber sheet and the strongest possible resin. Mainly the same process, just everything push to extreme, super high pressure, pre-preg carbon fiber with top resin, high heat.

    Anyone who has laminated Carbon by hand is gonna be super jealous about the infusion process they use here. The molds are perfect. No need for cloth, no need for vacuum, no 48 hour curing cycles, just piece goes in, resin squirted in quickly, boom piece done in perfect surface finish. That machine is a piece of Art. I'd love to have one of those at my disposal at any point in my life.

    maybe it's part of the production chain from BMW. Or a subsidiary company of BMW. If that's true, it's a very small investment by a company as big as BMW. for a developing country like the country where I live, BMW applies a completely knockdown system for every car it sells. The BMW company and dealer where I live only assembles it. Most of the parts are not produced domestically. So the investment for CFRP machines will be very worth it if they sell their products in bulk to all over the world. and of course, BMW cars in my country are selling well, at very high prices.

    There's a lot more manual work involved with carbon fiber compounds than with other materials. I wonder whether this is due to the material itself or due to the (low) demand that doesn't justify greater automation?

  • @2testtest2

    @2testtest2

    2 жыл бұрын

    Carbon fiber is definitely harder to automate than more common materials. The main reason is that it comes as a cloth, and cloth materials generally tend to behave unpredictability. As you can see from the video they are using quite complex machines even for simple material handling. They have also added some kind of binder to the material in order for it to better hold its shape, which is fine for a reasonably flat panel like this but might be challenging for more complex shapes.

    The mold is heated via an oil or steam circuit. The resin is injected into the mold at approximately 70 or 80 bar approximately and, being a thermosetting resin, its cross-linking begins. This is my experience as I am a mold maker for this technology.
