Singer Factory Tour: How The Most Beautiful Porsches In The World Are Restored | Top Gear

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Singer has come a long way since its founder Rob Dickinson started turning Porsche 964s into four-wheeled jewellery 12 years ago. But with overwhelming demand from people who want a brand new, old 911 (the waiting list for a car is now four years) it’s outgrown its premises. Which means Singer needs a bigger one. Which it now has: a mega new facility in Torrance, California to hold all of its operations under one roof. And what a place it is. So please slacken your jaw and allow Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Marriage and Singer Vehicle Design’s CEO Mazen Fawaz to be your guide.

What I find interesting is Rob knows how valuable each team member is. He could easily say "they are this good because of MY process and procedure" but he doesn't. He is able to do all that because he lets the employees do what they are good at.

Does he now. I have been at Singer several times, and I'm also a customer. I have never seen him there, met him or even spoken to him over the phone. For me he seems way too distant to even have any idea about who works there and he most certainly do not have any relations with clients it would seem. This might not be popular opinion, but Tim Gregorio is the man and the brains behind the operation, and he is also the man behind a lot of the designs, the engineering etc. Yes Rob had an idea and he is a big part of it, but I can tell you that you can thank someone else for what it became and is.

The sheer amount of beautiful Porsche's is just stunning. I'm absolutely gobsmacked. This is Porsche 911 heaven. I have a uncle in Santa Barbra California with a 70's 911 targa. I got to ride in it back in the 80's. It's so great to see the customers ordering cars in bold beautiful colors. There's way too many black, white and gray/silver cars out these days. I hope to be able to get a Singer targa some day. I was hoping to see Rob Dickenson the founder of Singer being interviewed. I've seen a few videos of the Singer workshop over the years, but this is the first time I've seen this new factory. This kind of reminds me of RUF. Only RUF has there own chassis and components. The young boy counts down from 3, if I recall; Mazen takes off; kid giggles (adorably) at the experience. There are. The business model isn't a recent revelation at all its just Singer has refined it incredibly well. It also doesn't hurt that the lines of older Porsche's are iconic universally and didn't change drastically for decades. Which meant multiple generations grew up admiring those outlines and models with posters on their bedroom walls and all - now a lucky bunch are of an age where they can afford an updated, upgraded, masterpiece. I'm sure every rich supercar collector now also needs a Singer in the collection as well. I remember when I worked on a car magazine show in the late 1990s and we visited a workshop where they resto-modded old 50's/60's/70's Jaguars using the newer present-day model Jags. At the time they were famous in the Jaguar world. If you're interested they were called Beacham Jaguar.

Most luxury goods are overpriced. There will always be a select group of people willing to pay for quality and exclusivity. If one has the means and the time, I'm sure a person, could make something similar for much less.

I have been fortunate in being able to drive two examples of Singer “hot rods” and it is literally difficult to verbally pass along how perfect the driver engagement experience feels as opposed to a purely original Porsche 964/911. Actually, as opposed to any other major car manufacturer, not just Porsche, including the more focused low production quantity products. I was captivated by the level of precision and obviously thoughtful effort that was presented in the effort to elevate the “feel” of quite literally every detail the driver would be engaged with. That goes for those items one would touch and see while operating the car or even sitting still. But what was surprisingly unique was just how specifically intentional the car communicates through the seat, pedals, and steering wheel. For anyone that is a true lover of the drive experience (very different from say, the comfort experience), I have honestly never experienced another vehicle that seems to have taken every detail, down to the minutia, to this extraordinary level of intention to all the senses of the driver’s engagement experience. Aside from the physical vehicle, it’s actually quite fun just to imagine the effort and interaction that was obviously involved to bring a car like this to life. The whole concept of Singers intention along with these final products are just the absolute definition of cool. 👍🏻😎👍🏻

Yes.. however SoCal is the epicenter of custom automotive culture of the West Coast, if not the entire US; and that's where creative people and the pool of talent is available. There's a reason there's so many global manufactures have design studio's in SoCal, and it has nothing to do with cost. SoCal isn't the only place in the US that creative talented people are, but the SoCal culture and weather act as an incubator for creativity. Having lived there myself, I will agree with you that its a terrible place to conduct business and employee people (taxes and an endless list of state agencies working against business success) but with over 10 Million people in the LA and Orange county region there's always the manufacturing resources available.

i heard of singer for the first time on top gear when James May drove a incredible nice 911 singer in grey. It was explained that the brand is Singer because it´s owner had a band but not known to many ,the reason why he started to improve old 911´s , my surprise when i saw Catherine wheel lead singer as being the "Singer", might not have been a very sucessfull band but one of my favorite bands in the 90´s, started with their fantastic first LP "Ferment" than i bought all Lp´s that came out ,i might not love each song from this band but enough to buy all their records and if i had enough money i would also buy their Singer 911´s

Nope. At one point yes, but not any more. I’d rather a RUF. Not so long ago you could spend up to half a million dollars on a Singer, now they start at well over that. Or they would if you could still order a naturally aspirated coupe. The DLS showed them that price was immaterial and that they could put as many zeros as they liked on a car and still have a queue. So it’s 7 figure Turbos now and they’re starting to feel a bit less cool driver’s car and more cars and coffee collectible. RUF are just doing what they’ve always done - focused on velocity rather than vanity and they now cost about the same as a Singer, but come with a carbon monocoque. I do well enough that I thought I might be able to save for a Singer in a year or two but now there’s just no way. Gorgeous, but just too much money for a 400 bhp trinket.

As a fan of Porsches, I can honestly say that RUF and Singer Vehicle Design are the top Porsche recreators in history, even though I don't think that is the right word for it. It's like the Low Drag GT E-Type in many ways even though we all know that one company rebuilds classic cars from scratch with modern tech and the other remodels classic cars and give modern touches. In fact, imagine if RUF and SVD joined forces to create the ultimate 911!

I sold Porsche's in the 80's and 90's. I have driven so many different Porsche's I have no idea just how many. From the 924 to slant nosed 911's and the 91 911 Turbo. There wasn't a 911 Turbo in 1990 and the '91 was the first Turbo that wasn't such a handful to drive 10/10's. Those days bring back so many memories. When the C4 was introduced in '89 I knew Porsche has a winner. Then came the C2 in 1990. The C4 and C2's were both a joy to drive full out. The C4 handled like it was on rails! It's nice seeing a company building a 911 on my favorite model, the 964! How I would love to have a chance to sit behind the wheel of any Singer for a day! Truly a work of art.
