Bmw B47 Reliability 2019......It Makes The Power But Will It Break The Chain ?? F36 420D Gran Coupe

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

in this video we go over the b47 engine which is found on the f series cars from 2014 to present and I am really shocked about this engine and how it performs I must say bmw have either gone to rehab or really been overtook by a new eco because this engine does not feel like the previous model what so ever so in this video I show you all the common things that will fail on these cars in years to come and what you will need to sort this car and trust me this car is gonna be very very complicated for people come the future not only complicated BUT expensive

I have BMW X3 2015 F25 with B47 at 140 000 miles with original chain and no issues so far, apart from failed aircon pump that I replaced with second hand one from a wrecked X3. All works fine without programming. Straight swap, even though the revision number for the aircon pump was from a slightly newer X3 2016. The car has been mainly used on motorway for long work trips across the country. I'm planning to get the timing chain done soon though. So far it's been a great engine.

Just got mine 2nd hand a B47 engine 118d xDrive 90 000 km on the clock. Seems very newish as I got it from BMW with an extra 12 month warrany. Very quite Diesel engine and even when I stick my ears under bonnet, no suspicious noise. Will be going to Spain from Geneva and will let you know. But it is wise to keep 5 or 6000 € under your pillow for any repares if one wants to go far in mileage .....

I've got 2016 320d 163 PS b47. Bought it with 100k, now running 122k and no issues, runs lovely, a lot of torque, manual gearbox, very fast and precise. When changing gears to lower, increases the revs so its really smooth downshifting and gives the driver a pleasure. The sounds when cold are little bit strange in compare with some older diesel engines, but I used to it. The only thing (except oil and filters) I've changed (or just they made a control, I'm not 100% sure, but ist fine) the AGR cooler, was recalled from BMW to make a control. Replaced/controlled on their cost, of course. So far I just enjoy it and I'm working on my little project on it, I love this car. It's my second BMW, after e46 2.0d with M47 (lovely engine, indistructable), and am very pleased.

Drive it daily to work and back 80 miles all motorway. I drive my girlfriends petrol if nipping into town. I only open the throttle when the engine is fully warm, when it's cold I don't go above 2k rpm before changing gear. I comfortably get 65-70 mpg, sometimes a little bit more. Best car I've owned as it's good on fuel, fast, and very comfortable. I plan on keeping it for many years to come.

Really interesting. I find it better to buy a relatively high mileage newer car that's been sat on the motorway at an average speed of 70 mph/1700 rpm than an old, low mileage one. Which has probably been driven around town using more RPMs for the same money, as wear is greater per mile driven and perishable parts will have aged.

BMW F20 118d 150hp (auto gearbox, B47 engine) from 2015 with 94,000 km and always followed at BMW. I notice a slight jerk at start-up (only once) that I feel inside. When hot, this problem is less present. No jolts when restarting if the "Start & Stop" mode is activated. Anyway, I always deactivate the "Start & stop" mode. For me, the automatic gearbox is fluid and no problem during gear changes (or when changing gears). We intend to empty the box to 120000km (recommendation ZF). The last intervention carried out: change of the lambda probe downstream of the catalyst detected following passage suitcase and important vibrations at the start (problem settled). Maniac, I wish to know if you had the same thing? If so, do you find that normal? If not, have you contacted BMW and rectified this malfunction? Thank you for your feedback.

Hi, I have an F10 520d/2014 with this engine. It has 178k mile on it. I replaced the sensors for the DPF (about 300 GBP in parts) and the intake manifold (that was about 1000 GBP but was paid by the previous owner). What can I say? Great fuel efficiency and the DPF shows no signs of being in need of replace. I didn't hear any weird noises from the timing chain. I heard two opinions: one that I don't have to worry about it, and another coming from people who said that it needs to be replaced. Previously, the car was serviced in BMW network at 15,000 miles. I changed that habit and now I'm doing the oil change every 6000 miles. Other than that, what can I say? It runs great, smooth, and with no rattles.

The DPFs last for a very long time on these modern BMWs, on the 1.5 I3, 2.0 I4 (This engine shown here and the engine in your 520d) and the 3.0 I6. The AdBlue system, which BMW calls 'BluePerformance' is also very reliable. You have nothing to worry about when it comes to the DPF (and the AdBlue system if it is equipped with it) on these beautiful engines.

Failed MOT last year on emissions, timing chain was replaced. (Different tools and kit needed from N47). Failed MOT again this year for emissions. Looks like car was previously mapped and might have hole in the DPF. I'm cleaning out the ERG intake manifold and will be spraying cleaner to decarbon the valves. Hopefully this will fix it. It has been a reliable car though! But i do like a car i can work on, and not so heavy on the computer. Thanks for vids. UPDATE: 09.04.24. The cleaning helped, but it seems the remap it had must have failed, long before i bought it. 02 after cat sensor replaced and recall work done by BMW has fixed the problem now. Air fuel mix was off, recall required software factory reset, cleared map and car runs lovely again. Really pleased with BMW 👍

i have a 518 137 KM 2.0 2014 model 2015 with this engine. 214,000 Kilometers mileage. After about 200,000 miles, there was a problem with leaking coolant. It was not detectable in any way and the losses varied from 1 liter per 100 kilometers to even the entire content over 20 kilometers. Very not regular. I found out that it is a manufacturing defect and that the repair is free. They repaired the defect free of charge, but did not provide the cause and type of defect. I only saw that one wire looked like new. 1.11 in the video Black plastic with elbow. That was the only problem with the engine. Gearbox 8-speed automatic damaged last year. I advise you to change the oil after 70-80 thousand. I checked the condition every year. And at the time of the crash it was full. It's just that no one thought that this oil wears out and was a worthless liquid.

I own a F30 318d B47 8/18. I drive it to work for 102 miles in total. I have 43.000 miles on my car by now and I haven't had any issues so far. I change my oil every 6000 miles though. Do you know if I can do a chip tuning to a 320d safely? So going from 150hp to 190hp?

Hi, I have a 2015 B47d20, 110kw engine and at 170.000km the fun began; At 170.000 km the fuel rail above the engine began to leak; then, because of that issue the DDE Unit failed ( since the unit was full of diesel fuel ); at 175.000km the EGR went; and at 178.000 the turbo or sensor, actuator in turbo failed; and offcourse, you cant just change the actuator; The car has benn Full Serviced, regulary at BMW dealer!

Hi Dean, im thinking of buying a 420d. I have noticed that BMW recommends servicing the car every 20,000 miles. Would that concern you, as the oil degrades too much? What should I be looking for in the service history?

Its a bit of a tricky one really as BMW aren't going to make their intervals 'Too long' they are long for a reason, the oil is 'Long Life' but personally I would be changing it at half that mileage. It is a strangely long service interval compared to the usual 10-12k/1 year, I wonder what a master tech would say if you asked them about it.

Bought a 2001 then a 2005 525d Touring new back along, but nowadays any 5-series less than about five years old would be way beyond my budget. However late last year (2021) my Volvo suffered a other-guy's-fault collision and, bugger me, my insurer's courtesy replacement for ten days was a 71-plate 520d Touring! The four-pot engine on that car is the most recent upgrade of the B47, with bi-turbo and ADBlue etc. Still 190bhp I believe, but with amazingly improved fuel economy. Apparently these latest versions have gone belt-cam now too? Anyway, it was beautifully refined, ran like honey and frankly is the only four-pot diesel on the market that doesn't sound like a diesel at all - even from the outside on idle. What a great pity that this will be probably BMW's final diesel design, given the impending 2030 new sales ban and skyrocketing oil price thanks to Russia.

Yes, you are correct, the B37/B47/B57 will most likely be BMW's last line up of diesel engines. It's really sad considering that they are the definitely the best diesels on the market. The only other diesels that come even close to them is Mercedes' OM654 2.0 inline 4 diesel and the OM656 3.0 inline 6 which are immensely smooth diesels, just like the current BMW diesels. In 2017 they added an SCR catalyst with AdBlue, which BMW call BluePerformance. They also changed it from a single-turbo to a twin-turbo system. My 2017 320d M-Sport Plus has this updated engine, the B47TU1. The power figures remained the same but the torque band was stronger for the '20d' models (meaning that full torque, 400nm of which lasted for longer in the rev band, creating a nicer driving experience). We've had it from day one. Such an amazing car and a joy to drive. 66238mi now, still surprises me how we've put up that much mileage, I still remember it being on 17 miles. Probably will change it soon with a new 320d. Always used to have petrol 6 cylinder BMWs (and one V8 X5, 2005) but this amazing engine sold me over on diesel BMWs.

It has been completely computerized since the M47 through the N47 and now the B47. This is not any more complex than the ones preceding it. Just make sure you have a knack at using a laptop. If you are just a greasemonkey you will suffer but otherwise you will be just fine. And if we get decent right to repair legislation on all things consumption getting your hands on a legal copy of INPA or ISTA will be no trouble. The future is bright for these cars in my opinion. Oh and do not screw up your engine. Don't remove EGR don't remove DPF don't remap the engine unless you know what you are doing. Remapping it will most likely grind up your transmission or twist your propshaft as well as ruin the emissions profile that will screw up your DPF ruin your oil and then probably tear the timing chain etcetcetc. be sensible folks :) Sincerely: A happy N47 owner whose timing chain is still factory and whose DPF needed no maintenance and whose car just keeps purring on. PS: Oh Carly for BMW on Android is also pretty great at keeping a handle on things.

Hi BMW Doctor and thank you for a great video! I have a question which I hope you have time to answer. I just bought a X1 18d. I know that 18d, 20d and 25d basically have the same engine except that 25d has two turbines while the other two have one. Same engine meaning they are all three B47 2,0 liter diesel. I´m curious if there is any other difference between 18d and 20d than how they are programmed for power output. I did however read at one place that the 18d has lower performance injectors and smaller turbine than the 20d. Meaning that it can´t be mapped up in power to match the 20d. So my question is, do you know if there is a physical difference between 18d and 20d or if it is only programming difference?
