I would strongly recommend replacing the VANOS line at the same time - it's a ridiculously cheap part and is one of the five major oil leaks on this engine (along with the OFHG, so you're fixing two with one job).

Great job and nicely done. Informative but, not dull and long winded.

I did the same thing, but when i tightened the lower bolt, the sleeve did not pull in but cracked the alternator. $300 hundred dollar mistake!

I'm confused. So I did this job and used a brand new Febi gasket. Had massive oil leaks afterwards. Took everything apart again to investigate. All looked fine, apart from the dowels were slightly oval shaped. Reassembled, still pissing oil out. A friend took a look and said he wasn't happy with the Febi gasket and that I should use genuine BMW instead. So I went to my dealer and bought one. It seemed to be slightly chunkier, so fitted that. The oil leak situation seems to be slightly better [I think] although I can still seem to see oil in/around that area though not much of it. It's possible that it's residue, I did run plenty of brake cleaner up from below in through that slit where the housing meets the block [below the gasket] after I'd tightened everything so i though I'd have gotten all the oil out. However I've driven the car 150 miles since - much of it at 80mph on motorways - so I'd imagine anything residual would have gone by now. Anyway I'm going to pull all the ancillaries off again - sixth time now I think - to see if I can see evidence of oil there again. Sorry for the rambling here but I wonder if you'd had anything similar and if so what the likely cause could be ? Thanks in advance.

If the housing was tightened down unevenly or wasn't sitting down on one of the dowels correctly when tightened, it could have cracked the housing. I have seen a technician crack one before by tightening the bolts down with an electric impact before checking to see if it was seated on the dowels. Could also have cracked during tightening due to a weak spot in the casting and not necessarily anything you did.

@@MunkysGarage Thanks for this... that's what came to mind with me too. I had a good look at the housing when I took it off and couldn't see any evidence of cracks but I guess they could 'open up' so to speak when it's torqued down. I was extremely careful about tightening the bolts - the criss-crossing and the torque settings too. The one thing that's perplexed me a bit is that the massive leaking from before [when I had the Febi gasket] is definitely not there now. We'll see what the leak's like when I pull the ancillaries off this weekend. I bought a used housing off eBay last week as well as new dowels but I've not fitted either so that would possibly be my next course of action. Thanks again for your help. What should have been a simple job has turned into a nightmare !

@@bogusienombre355 It was just residue from the oil leak after the Febi gasket. A few more clean downs and it was fine. It's totally dry now. I was really surprised to get a substandard Febi part. Have been using loads of their products for years and this is the first time I've ever had an issue. Maybe it was just a faulty batch as the genuine BMW one looked chunkier.

Could just be residual that leaked out when you took the oil filter housing off. May want to check to see if it keeps coming out with the car running. That would indicate improper sealing or a damaged gasket

Your torque specs at the end of the video don't jive with the ones in the description. Which are correct? In particular I'm interested in the oil filter housing bolts. The video say 32 or 33 nm something and the description says 22nm.

Did it get tight at all and then get loose? Or did it just not tighten down at all? Either way, it's possible the threads could be stripped out of the hole.

@@MunkysGarage we're all the bolts the same color? I believe someone messed up in there at one point because the top right bolt was gold and it was the shortest of them all. Maybe someone just threw what they had in there at one point? Idk but I decided to try switching it with the bottom right bolt and everything went down perfectly and threaded smoothly.

  • @MunkysGarage

@@madfisherisme all of the bolts should be the same color. I've never seen one with a gold colored bolt in it, they have all been gray/silver steel bolts. That definitely could have been an issue. Just a bolt not long enough to get to the threads. Glad to hear it worked out for you.
