BMW 1992 325i E36 Clutch Master Cylinder Replacement

Clutch master cylinder replacement on a 1992 BMW 325i. This should be the same on any e36 body BMW. 318, 323, 325,328, M3 from 1992-1999

    This is a great video. FYI - There are at least two versions of the Mater Cylinder for 94 BMW 325i, depends on if your manufact date was before or after 10/94. , but the Cylinder here is the "non-threaded" type (my term) where as my car has the "1994 BMW 325i to 10/94; threaded port" My original part was cast, with a threaded end - not the cotter pin type shown. The replacement for the threaded model looks the same but has an additional metal coupler attached to the plastic cylinder to make the transition to the threaded hydraulic line.

    I finished the job today and it is all good. Today was the bleeding phase. I used the syringe method as described in one of the other KZread videos for the e36 clutch slave cylinder replacement. The other video is worth watching as they all are to get as many hints as possible but it is light on details on how to use the syringe. 1. disconnect the clutch master cylinder feed pipe from the side of the brake master cylinder reservoir. 2 insert the syring full of fresh brake fluid into the pipe and slowly pressurise. You will see bubbles coming to the top continually. I did this initially with the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder open. Take your time and keep a little pressure with the syringe. 3. Then have an assistant move your clutch pedal up and down slowly. Do this many times and you will see more bubbles surfacing and the level of fluid going down from the syringe. 4. Go underneath the car and close the slave cylinder bleed nipple. At this stage you should be able to feel that there is resistance when you press the clutch pedal. Still some bubbles may surface and this is good. 5 At this point I felt confident enough to start the car and see if I could engage gears.(Be very careful if the car is jacked up and on jack stands) Yes I could select the gears but the clutch 'bit' quite close to the floor. In fact too close to the floor. 6. Then I went under the car with my 7mm spanner and asked my assistant to pump the clutch pedal a few times and then hold to the floor. While he held it to the floor I loosened the bleed nipple and fluid and air escaped. In fact it was more like aerated fluid but that is OK. We used this final bleed 3 times uintil the fluid colour was clear and I had a good and firm clutch pedal..6 I restarted the engine and the gear selection was easy and the clutch 'bite' point was much higher. What this means is that the clutch felt normal and it was.7. make sure the clutch slave cylinder bleed nipple is reasonably tight and the job is almost done. 8. remove the syringe from the pipe carefully so as not to spill fluid and refit the clutch pipe back onto the main master cylinder reservoir. Refill the main master cylinder with brake fluid to the recommended level and the job is done.

    So good still. The part about the different way the low pressure side connects and also how to connect it by removing the line entirely after draining the fluid from the reservoir and just disconnecting it in from the engine bay totally reminded me of how I installed all this in the first place! Thank you

    I did this on my 1995 328i and it is more difficult on a right hand drive car. The steering column is in the way and getting the bolts out is much harder. If I did this again I would replace the 2 bolts with bolts which additionally have a phillips head slot in the head. I am sure that would help. I dropped the steering column down and also released the bottom column outer collar and slid it up the outer column out of the way. This made it much easier (Remember mine is a right hand drive model) Disconnecting the pressure pipe. I did this in the engine bay because I did not want to bend the pipe and drag it into the cabin. I took the engine coil cover off and this made hand access to the fitting easier. removing the coil cover is only 2 nuts under their little covers. Before you reassemble make sure the 2 bolts have perfect threads that screw into the nut and switch bracket easily. I cleaned them up with a tap and die. This makes reassembly much easier.

    Ian Buckley Maybe it's easier to get to on RHD but I couldn't even find the clutch line in the engine bay or from underneath, theres too many other things to contend with on the left side.

  • @iangbuckley

    @iangbuckley

    SupraWes I did this job last week and it is all reassembled but I have not bled the system yet. The connection between the clutch master cylinder and the metal pipe is difficult to see on RHD because it is almost behind the brake booster. Once you have identified it first time you realise what it is. I think the metal piping from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder is much longer on RHD and goes right across behind the motor along with some other brake pipes.

    Ian Buckley I think there are 3 KZread videos on doing this job, maybe more. It is well worth watching all of them because collectively they are very helpful. It is worth watching the slow moving 43 minute one because there are some good tips in that one. They all have some helpful ideas. However they are all done using a LHD car.

    Eric Leippe This is my first BMW, and first non Toyota, I have had the e36 for 5 years now. While I love driving it especially with the upgrades I have done the quality of the parts they used frustrates me. Too much plastic, especially in the cooling system where there should be none. Subframe mounts that rip out on multiple BMW models. and Interior panels that fall apart. I think they are just over engineered to the point of fragility.

    It's true, they can be a pain to work on. My mom has an e46 and we gave up trying to replace her sunroof mechanism. I think the best use of an E36/46 is a stripped out racer. Recently I did some work on a Volvo 122. The experience really has me wanting an old car again. Such a joy to work on. I had a '79 Corolla coupe, miss that car!

    Excellent job brother and thanks for sharing the video with us. Do you by any chance remember what brand your new aluminum master cylinder is? You mentioned that it comes with a FAG plastic one and I hate FAG parts. I ordered a wheel bearing from BMW in Oregon and it was supposed to be a Japanese Koyo for a genuine BMW but they sent me a FAG. I may be needing to do this job on my Z3 because my master cylinder reservoir is low. and I don't want a plastic part back in it. Thanks again and hope you're enjoying your weekend.

  • @SupraWes

    @SupraWes

    9 жыл бұрын

    +cameron cross I would first suck out all the brake fluid in the master cylinder, use a turkey baster. then you can remove the hose from the clutch cylinder from under the dash above the pedal and pull it out from the engine compartment. Then with your new hose you can snake it out the hole in the firewall from the inside of the car, it will help to peel back the carpet to see the hole better. Once you have enough snaked out you should be able to look in the engine compartment and see it poking out from behind the brake booster. Then you should just pull enough through to re-attatch to the master cylinder and then reconnect it to the clutch cylinder under the dash and you should be good to go. It will not be an easy job because of the tight space everything is in and you cant always see things well but that is the general idea to fish it from the inside of the car out, the hole is hidden by the brake booster so you cant really fish it the other way. Hope this helps.

    They are really well engineered cars that drive great. The downfall is that so many parts are made of plastic they take more maintenance than most other cars, I would never suggest a used BMW or one without a warranty to anyone who can't do their own wrenching.

    Question for you about the master cylinder. I have a drift car and was at an event over the weekend, and lost my clutch. When I engage the clutch it has no pressure and just sticks to the floor with no rebound. I figured it might be the slave and replaced it because it was easy and cheap, but still have the same symptom, which leads me to the master. Would you say that the symptoms that im suffering from could be from the master?

  • @SupraWes

    @SupraWes

    8 жыл бұрын

    It usually goes slower than that where the clutch wont fully disengage but it is possible. When you replaced the slave cylinder was the rod hitting the fork? Sometimes a piece of the clutch comes apart and gets wedged between the clutch disc and pressure plate. If it just broke mid drift that is more likely.

  • @AceXwilD

    @AceXwilD

    8 жыл бұрын

    When I replaced the slave I had to push it into the transmission to start the threads on the two bolts, so I assume it was on the fork correctly. The symptom I am feeling with my car is zero effort to push the clutch in, I could do it with my pinky, then it will stay compressed on the floor. I started car in 1st gear and drove it off the track with no noticeable, or audible difference. It's also worth noting that a few weeks ago at a different event a few times when quickly engaging the clutch it would slip off the clutch stop to the left compressing the master cylinder further that its suppose to. This might have walked it down a path to failure? Also clutch peddle has always been slightly curved to left not perfectly straight.

  • @SupraWes

    Ok, yeah, change the master and you should, be good, there is also a plastic bushing at the pivot point of the pedal you might want to replace while you are in there if it is not sitting right.

    I don't see how, the pedal hangs on the pin on the firewall and then connects to the master cylinder in the middle. That should se t the pedal height. Possibly an incorrect or mis manufactured master cylinder.

    If the pedal falls to the floor or the clutch is not releasing when you press in the pedal it is most likely the master cylinder, if the car is revving up but the car is not moving or moving very little it is probably the clutch.
