Heads up regarding me saying the red tube light had less colour information on the BM; I totally forgot it has gamut compression ticked as default when capturing BRAW; unticking would have probably fixed that issue. I had just posted on this then noticed your comment. To me I prefer the Blackmagic on that shot. It reminds me of a similar comparison I saw between a RED and and ARRI a while back. Red colors should be, in my opinion either redish or pinkish in hue. Not yellowish orange with a redish orange glow.

Love to hear your thoughts on the new URSA CINE 12K in light of your recent purchase? I think it looks like a Burano killer?!

Burano seem to have really bad rolling shutter. It's unacceptable for a camera this expensive. Did you notice that in actual shooting?

I did not, but I have never noticed rolling shutter in my footage form any of my cameras, maybe it my shooting style but I find rolling shutter is pretty low down on my list of needs from a camera.

@@johnsospencer To be fair, if you shoot 4K on the Burano, it will be the same ~8ms readout like the A7SIII/FX3. That being said, this camera is still very strange compared to much cheaper options, like an FX9 or Venice 1.

Pro tip for any Black Magic shooters. If you go to the slow motion settings that crop into the sensor. Go to Q0 or the best possible compression and look at the difference compared to 8:1. I think those compression algorithms are timebased, so the more frames the more thirsty it is for data. Q0 on the Ursa mini pro at 300 is actually quite good.

Hey OBP. Just curious about the Video Assist. It doesn’t natively support Slog3. Do you have a slog to rec709 lut installed? Do you have a lut enabled in camera that’s transmitting to the monitor? And if so do the exposure tools on the monitor reflect the LOG or the lut

Pretty much yes to all the questions. I load Sonys Slog3 LUT into the monitor because sending it from the camera means false color is being applied to late in the pipe. Works amazing tho and in terms of lower budget monitors there the best I have ever used.

First test mate… BM at 400 ISO means it’s exposed to more light for the same exposure value (if going off a meter) I.e the BM would have to be at F2.0 to the Burano’s F2.8, got to match these settings regardless of native iso ranges, 800 iso on the Burnao makes a demand for less light (camera will do the heavy lifting) which gives it more highlight range, it’s already going to beat the BM anyway but in this setup it was easily going to have more highlights range

yeah actually to match highlight rooloff on bm6k or any bm pocket of bm ff cameras you have to go to iso 1000 just a step before dual iso hits adt 1250 iso

I did try a few different ISO's, and while we may have gained a little in highlights at higher ISO the noise in my skin was really bad, I landed on it looked best at 400iso and am guessing thats some of the reason why blackmagic engineers end up making it 400 and not 800 native.

@@OBP_ it’s more that you’d want the test to be equal, as in the sky blew out quicker on the BM due to the extra stop of exposure needed if the ISO target was 400 over 800. What you found would have been interesting, as in the noise in the skin tones… you also could have lowered the Burano to 400 Ei, might have shown the same highlight roll off but with a stop more in the shadows

Definitely worth more! But maybe...realistically only 3x?

It would be nice to see the log image at 3:55 to see how much information is actually there. The lens you are using on the Burano is flaring more, giving a nice look to the over exposed areas. Highlight roll off can be changed in post as long as the info is there. Does the Burano actually hold more information in the highlights? I think sharpness will be dictated by your lenses and of course the Burano will win being 8K. The Burano definitely does better at high ISO and I would wager it keeps shadow information a bit better.

I think the butano is not about having just one camera. It’s about options as a producer. You can go FX3,FX6, FX9 or even Venice and compliment up or down.

I used an M3 MacBook pro for editing and it dint have a problem with any. In fact it could play both 8.6k raw and 6k raw in the same frame when comparing without dropping frames. Not sure how a older computer would find the footage tho

It's not just whip pans, people call bad rolling shutter "jello" for a reason... it becomes obvious when there's any motion involved.

@@ryanpallotta5 Yea 13ms isn't bad, but to get that speed you have to dial it down to super 35 mode (cropped in 1.5x). We're talking about a $25,000 camera marketed as 8k full frame 🤦‍♂

apples and oranges - the real question is in which usage scenarios the burano makes sense when compared to an FX9 or the venice.

The better color and highlight roll off on the Burano is pretty dramatic, as you'd hope for a camera costing that much. I'm very interested in Burano, I just wish the rolling shutter and price were better and that it came with an on camera LCD for controls.

I think the color on the Burano is MUCH WORSE. I know you can grade it… but it looked terrible compared to the Blackmagic here. I think people just want the expensive cameras to have something “magical” about the color, but they just don’t. IMO, BM has the best color next to Arri- regardless of price. To each their own though.

From what I've seen in feature films and in my own experience, rolling shutter is not as big a deal as it's made out to be. Most of the time there is rolling shutter effects, it's usually in the form of a whip pan from one subject to another. If it occurs in an "action scene", I doubt anyone is looking at vertical lines while watching unless the action is extremely boring and they make a point of looking for problems. Another example is "cat's eye" bokeh. Maybe it's an issue for photographers, but, I've seen cat's eye bokeh in feature films and critically acclaimed television shows. Just skimming through one episode of the critically-acclaimed HBO series, "Succession", I found plenty of cat's eye bokeh throughout. So, does it really matter? To some it's a deal breaker. Yet, it doesn't stop shows from receiving critical acclaim and awards.

Colour separation and DR is better on the UMP G2 with Rawlite OLPF than BMCC6K

the Burano footage looks so much better and clearer in this review. Do you think some of the concerns can be fixed via firmware or other updates? To me who the heck is panning that fast for the hello effect. I would use G master lenses so adding an IR cut filter may not be that annoying.

Great video. Burano colors seem more true to life. That DR stands out as well in those tough lighting conditions. The visual differences are pretty small these days but no doubt as a professional tool on set the burano kills the BM. Worth the price tag only if you are booking the right type of jobs.

The Cinema 6k looks better in all examples. Also if you need to brighten the image of the 6k easily, change from BRAW to vlog. I feel the BM is giving a finished look in this video.

Not at all, I think that's entirely the wrong path. They need a better Ursa, in a new form factor (Blackmagic cube camera is basically a meme now). If they made a Full Frame of their 12k sensor (with the same resolution, just bigger pixels) and keep the frame rates and good rolling shutter in a body like the BS1H/Komodo/Zcam in L-mount it would definitely be my next purchase

Are the Athenas worth it? I'm right on the fence.

I’m just gonna point out something I feel nobody else is…. Sony released footage from the burano months earlier and nobody complained about rolling shutter. It may be something you the camera operator notice. But does the audience who is unaware of the lab test results notice? That’s the bigger question.

@@OBP_ but what I can understand and do agree with is that Sony set a precedent of what their cameras stand for. The fx6, fx3, Venice, all had consistency between them all… and the burano is an outlier. The fx6 didn’t suffer from IR pollution. They all had fast sensor read outs. Sony said the fx lineup was for documentary work, while the Venice is for narrative, with the burano being a blend of the two. But due to its limitations it doesn’t really.

A used panasonic S1H with a, BM video assist is a better camera than the BMPCC 6k.

i really do not get why sony simply can not fix their magenta tones finally they already have some cameras that are better at tht but the cinema stuff ... why? it is of course fixable but a problem from day one

What about the Burano menus? That's what usually scares me away from Japenese cameras. Hopefully the pro sony cameras don't make you dig through menus.

I realize the Burano is super expensive, but man does that footage look good! Even in my A7Cii I recently got, Sony seems to really have their act together lately.

.. if you like green and blue faces .. than yes :) But I am just hating. Great camera. I just prefer the yellow Nikon/Black Magic/ Fuji / Red faces and colours in general over the Sony and Canon blue faces and general colour world

@@tptrsn .. I do not call about the Color rendering abilities. But the colour „look“ in general. Sony/ and Canon have a different colour style than Red/fuji/ Nikon,BM. Neither is better. Just a matter of how you prefer it. I had a dop convince me lately to shoot with Burano and fx6 as second angle on a shoot lately. Instead of using my Komodo and 6k pocket as second angle - and I had it again, that I really do not like Sony colors.

@@ryanpallotta5 just simple things like false color, the compression on the XOCN differs a little than on the Venice, I’ve heard it’s different than the XOCN on my F55. Im sure some of these things will be addressed soon. Nothing major, I’m a big Sony fan, not hating.

@@ryanpallotta5 Hard to say. I know some folks want open gate and some other things that would make the camera overall better. The firmware can effect sensor readout when it’s detecting IR light, some cameras use OLPF, so I’m not sure but could say be hopeful. I know BM cameras used to suffer from this pretty bad and I have a 6KPro that I have not seen the issues with it.

The Blackmagic has exceptionally poor dynamic range. You are also mistaken about roll off - log and RAW have no highlight roll off. What you are seeing is unsightly highlight clipping of the underperforming BMCC 6K.
