The fact that Super Rugby allowed fans to come onto the field offers a glimpse into what made the 90s and early 2000s Super Rugby different and so popular. There wasn't so much emphasis on celebrity rugby players who are untouchable, it was about creating connections between players (idols) and fans of all ages. That is the sort of stuff NZ has a unique advantage and possibility of having which other countries due to population cant. It creates connection, inspiration and adoration for the game.

I just don’t understand the whole obsession with getting players back who have left. Started with Faingaanuku, then moved to sam and now Richie. If they have decided to leave, that’s it. Just because we haven’t been able to find suitable replacement of that level in the last 3 months doesn’t mean it’s end of the world. We have some very good players in the pipeline who with experience can get to that level. It is ridiculous NZR is trying to get them back. What message does it send to the current players? What does it do to their motivation and pathways to a black jersey?

Yeah that was a bizarre non-sequitur from Wilson. Was just saying how the comp is stronger than it has been in recent years (despite a lot of ABs leaving) and then talks about the need to bring back star players. SR needs to build the next crop into star/cult characters, entertain fans, ensure flowing rugby and become more connected to the community so each game is a big local event.

The Hurricane's management will be quietly confident after what their side had to endure for this game. The late withdrawals alongside their injury list really put them under the kosh but there was no drop-off in performance or intensity. Nah mate let Richie go. He created his legacy, a decent to good int. 10 with 56 caps. That's his legacy and whilst he will never be a great All Black, he was a good All Black. Lets keep the 10 jersey open for someone who wants to be a great All Black and is willing to make sacrifices to earn it. That's not to say you can't be both, look at Ardie Savea, an all time great All Black who has also earned money, but he always intended to come back and be a great All Black, he made sacrifices. We shouldn't be making huge financial sacrifices to buy players out of their overseas contracts when there are plenty of players here who have dreams of being great All Blacks and are currently making sacrifices to achieve this dream.

it’s always been very obvious to me that nz rugby does not care about the chiefs as much as they do the other nz teams because why have i seen multiple episodes of this show where they just don’t about the chiefs? maybe three of their players mentioned in passing. there’s not even a clip of their game to be found in this one. you have a panelist sitting right there wearing a chiefs jersey, still nothing. obviously there’s gonna be talk about the nz derbies, but this is supposed to be a show about ALL the kiwi teams and it’s a terrible look to just completely ignore one. it almost feels like last year they were forced to talk about the chiefs because of their amazing form but because maybe they haven’t been as spectacular this year, we’re back to ignoring them again. and in what time could’ve been used to talk about them, instead we were stuck listening to a think piece on whether or not we should spend a ton of money to bring back a player who gladly buggered off. what’s gonna happen if he comes back and injures himself, then it’s just a complete waste of money. what kind of confidence do you think that gives to the other no. 10’s who stayed here to fight for the vacant spot? also, as much as everyone is saying it’s nz rugby wanting mounga back, you’re not fooling anybody, we all know who’s really behind it. that arrogant, floating toupée we have the unfortunate experience of calling the all blacks coach. i just know mr. ultimatum is about to shove as many underperforming crusaders players into the all blacks as he can while more deserving and in form players miss out.

The better question is will Canterbury make it/how likely do they think it is possible. The difference between the questions completely goes over Kirwan's head and he has no idea or he doesn't care. NZ has the depth. They’ve done it for years. Don’t change the rules to accommodate players leaving for the big paycheck and also lifestyle. Nz rugby will always be good. But players who leave, it could strengthen the island teams. Mounga playing for Samoa or Tonga would be insane!!! Rugby needs to elevate all nations. The panel are some great rugby brains, but in all the discussion of the Canes v Blues, there was no mention of the Canes being down to their 4th and 5th hookers, and losing Lomax, Procter (Arguably 2 of their best players) and Delaney just prior to kickoff, having to re-jig the team, playing at Eden Park, and only losing by 4 points. Imagine if Moorby had not been bundled into touch. Yes the Blues won, but the average winning margin for the Blues at Eden Park for the last 2 years is 20 points. Winning by four is still a win, but these 2 teams are far closer than the panel seem to admit.

Nope, there’s this obsession with less games, you need more games. Some of the best fan-strong leagues, like the nrl as much as I despise it, or football in Europe like the premier league, have very long seasons. Even in rugby in Europe is from September to may. You need these longer seasons so the league and clubs are constantly in your mind, they become a part of your life and routine. Bin off the npc. You may have to sacrifice the prestige and tradition slightly but make it a second division tournament which runs at the same time as super rugby

France it’s booming and in Ireland it’s doing really well and they both have September to may seasons. You say it isn’t doing well in the uk, which is correct and not correct. In wales, it is doing pretty awfully. The Scottish youth system isn’t great but their 2 club sides are still performing well and getting decent crowds. England has had a lot of news about 3 clubs or whatever but the crowds are still as big as they have been at club level, there’s still a good size of population who go every home game, it’s just not winning enough casual rugby fans to the club scene to handle the spiralling costs of professionalism and covid. Unbelievable to have Havili in the squad when he’s not playing the best in the country in *any* position, let alone the 3 or 4 cover positions JK suggests

the fact that they all picked havili over quinn with those stats right in front of them is bizarre actually. havili is absolutely useless and there’s no point in having him in the squad just cause he can cover multiple positions when he’s mediocre at all of them. meanwhile in comparison tupaea is leading in carry metres and second behind anton in line breaks. just when i thought the obsession with average crusaders players was over, yet here we are.

Havili is a fine player. Not showing the needed form at this point, I agree he doesn’t make the selection. But how many other Crusader ABs also look below par because of their team slump?

@@fossilmatic Agree, he's a good player and I think he cops a lot of unwarranted criticism; but i don't understand not picking the best players possible in their positions and then having dynamic utility players to cover for injury.

Super Rugby form has never been as big a factor in All Blacks selection as everyone's making out. Nonu was terrible at super level (dropped from 3 teams, nzrfu had to call in favors to keep him playing and available for selection at his worst) but was an all time All Blacks great

I agree he's no in form to be picked anywhere, but i also find merit in having a utility back on the bench. Jordie Barret was never good enough to be first pick in any starting position before injuries forced him into 12 but he was my lock in bench choice. If you want a kicking 12 like for like backup for Jordie then testing one of the many talented fullbacks wouldn't be a bad option. I think Havili has been tested and failed repeatedly.

I'd actually like to see Tupaea at 12 and Proctor at 13. JK talks about specialists. I like Rieko, but he's not a specialist 13. And Havili is just a big NO.

Crusaders are weak and all of a sudden the rest of the country cares again! Not sure the Aussies have any increased interest. When the panelists are Highlanders, Chiefs and Blues fans they really think everyone cares just because they might win
