The real interest in the Crusaders season is not that they won’t win the championship, but that they have fallen in quality so quickly. For a franchise that always coped well with injuries, depth, gameplan, and consistency it has been puzzling to see them functioning at a capacity somewhere near the Waratahs . Not just coaching, because the problem seems more extensive than that. Not just improvement in the opposition, because the gap between the top four and the rest is substantial. And certainly not just the loss of Mo’unga, Whitelock etc because we’ve spent eight years noting how they nurture their second ranked players. Certainly their ability to play to the limit of the laws has fallen on the unhappy side of the refereeing for once. Maybe it’s the accumulated effect of all these factors, but it’s hard to fathom how a side can be so ordinary, so quickly.

It’s the coach. They play like a poorly coached team. Poor defense. Poor attack. Poor lineout. That’s all down to coaching.

"ability to play to the limit of the laws" - street smarts, as Razor calls it! If you look back the last few years, when they played a genuine B team, they lost. I don't remember them making wholesale changes, like Blues and Canes are currently doing, and being particularly successful. They were loosing more games every year and were not topping the table any more. I think Razor was well aware of this trend which is why he forced Rugby NZs hand.

I think the Drua have a real chance at an upset this week. They almost beat the Brumbies away a few weeks ago. They often rest players for their away games and name their best side for the home games. So that’s another reason for the big differences. They will probably name their best side this week.

Given Super Rugby has had contributions from other nations as well as NZ it should not be named after a single player. South Africa have been an important part of Super but have chosen to go elsewhere, and Argentina won’t be back. Why not call it the Oceania Trophy? Or what it really represents; the Southern Nations Cup? If Japan or the States eventually come into the franchise, call it the Pacific Nations Trophy. That includes everyone, you’d want the kudos of being the top team in this half of the globe, and you wouldn’t be celebrating something named after a player from another rival nation (imagine The Crusaders celebrating winning the John Eales Cup… just doesn’t sit well).

I love the Ranfurly Shield idea. Super Rugby should've introduced a version of it from day one. There's a guy on rugby reddit who tracks home defence records at Test level and has created a website with all the stats. I think Ireland are/were the 'holders' for aaaaages.

I’d call the Super Rugby trophy the Lomu-Gregan Trophy. Lomu: The icon at the moment rugby turned pro with Super Rugby (I believe he also played in that first Blues Canes game). Gregan: IMO the greatest player Australia has produced, the spearhead of the Brumbies. A bit rough no not include any South Africans, but as they aren’t in the competition any longer it wouldn’t be appropriate.

Would love to see other top international players playing in Super just imagine if we had some of the best from Ireland, France & Europe etc in the comp how highly competitive games would be week in week out but the reality is unlike the European comps where there's alot of money invested into the game by the competing regions NZ & AUS rugby on the otherhand simply dont have the $$$ to recruit or entice the best rugby players around the world think the best option moving forward is for Super to join & emerge with the Japanese comp which does have $$$.. then the eligibility rules around players applying their trade in Japan wouldnt matter & im sure more NZ players would want to play in the comp rather then go to Europe...

On top of adding a Ranfurly Shield-esque trophy to Super Rugby they should have the Super Rugby Aotearoa put up for grabs, either whichever NZ based team is highest on the table at the end of the regular season wins it or we count competition points for local derbies separately for it.

For international rugby we use the location of the first match so the Raeburn Shield is the lineal title in the mens game as the first match in 1871 was at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh. In the womens game it is the Utrecht Shield as the first womens international in 1982 was in Utrecht (Netherlands) between France and Netherlands. Could be a good way to go with super version

Gotta say it's a bit silly for Jim to say that he "doesn't know" what's going on at the Tahs - they have an injury crisis for the ages (I think at this point every contracted front rower has been ruled out for the season) that's been well-covered in Aus media, so it's not really that surprising for them to be all over the shop. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on who Darren Coleman's replacement should be, especially on the murmurs that Brock James could be a viable candidate.

Why is it that refs are looking for the marginal fringe rulings? The Crusaders have had a few O’Keefe calls in their time. But this year has been a stand out. Deliberately knocked dead. Yes we acknowledge this is a penalty, but if the Brumbies player touches the ball first it is a knock on, the action being first means Strange’s “strange” decision is irrelevant. It seems the refs are looking for the complicated and ignoring the simple. Shot clock. As far as I understand and from what can be obtained online. Conversion - 90seconds Penalty - 60 seconds This actually lost the Crusaders a game this year because the refs got shot clock wrong. What’s more amazing is the game hours before where Moana won the shot clock was 90 seconds…

The break from traditional NZ rugby brands in favour of a superficial corporate brand based on a alien American model is the issue. If you want to engage fans and build intergenerational engagement you can’t break the lineage. My point was to illustrate the inability to use the tradition in a physical and emotive sense is not accessible in the super rugby format. But sounds like you fellas are all over it keep whipping your dead horse.

@@Tmcds1234 I get the tradition thing. We have the Currie Cup which is the oldest club tournament in the world but unfortunately it is not fit for purpose in the new professional global rugby world we live in. We need to keep the tradition and I think SR tried to do that and linked the franchises to the big regions and clubs but can never satisfy everyone. But without Super Rugby, there would be no money to pay the players and the ABs would suffer as a result. NPC etc on its own would never generate near the revenue needed to maintain the high standards required today.
