    So the original script had Elwood, Mighty Mack and Brother Zee (played by Jim Belushi) raising money to refurbish the orphanage but the studio rejected it cause it was virtually identical to the plot of the first movie so the studio opted for a more fantasy based, kid friendly version that both Aykroyd and Landis had to be convinced not to quit, also Aykroyd and Goodman worked without pay to keep the films budget down, so not only did Dan Aykroyd hate working on this film, he wasn't even being paid for it.

    The plot should have been Elwood trying to get the money to bury Jake before they put him in a potter’s field. You have the urgency, religious connection, and the end game. John Goodman picks Jake up from jail, eliminate the kid, you got your movie.

    The plot should have been Elwood organizing a memorial concert dedicated to Jake and Curtis. They could show Elwood going through the struggles of organizing a concert, recruiting his old band members to perform as well as the new characters such as Queen Moussette, the Louisiana Gator Boys, and even Jonny Lang who played the singing janitor. Mighty Mack can accompany Elwood and in the process Elwood could be a mentor to Mack showing him the ropes of being a blues musician. Cabel would still be a State Police Commander but plays blues music in his spare time keeping that unknown link with his bio father, Curtis. Elwood will tell Cabel his true parentage and convince him to perform not only in memory of the father he’s never met, but he can finally showcase his inherited talents. This story works on many levels: It gives Elwood a purpose and a way to cope with the loss of his brother and father figure. The old band can perform one last time without having to leave behind their successful businesses. Mack will be developed from a shy bartender to a charismatic and energetic performer. Cabel can finally perform in public and bring closure to the shocking news delivered by Elwood and he won’t have to leave behind his high profile job. Most importantly, the movie can serve as a love letter to John Belushi and his impact.

    I feel really bad for John Landis, Universal Pictures forced so many changes on his movie that he had no control over. He said to an interviewer at some point "First they wanted a PG-13 film. Then they wanted a black Blues Brother. Then they wanted a kid Blues Brother. And they didn't care about any continuity from the first film. After all that, nothing was left. At least the music in it was good, right?" Oh, John, you have my sincerest condolences!

    I started driving a truck over the road at 20 years old, back in 2001. The very first load I asked for was to Chicago. I dropped my trailer at the trainyards, put on a black suit, and the Blues Brothers Soundtrack. I began driving around to every single point I had marked on my map...starting at Joliet Prison. I went from there to the Richard J. Daley Center. Saw the underpass where the police cars piled up, Lyon's Deli, Pilgrim Baptist Church, the Palace Hotel, Chez Paul, the Palladium, Wrigly Field and about a half-dozen other streets and intersections shown in the movie. It was the closest thing to a religious pilgrimage I've ever been on. This movie does not exist.

    Hopefully, you were smart enough to stf out of Harvey. It was a dmz back in the 70s and never got better (Dixie Square mall, closed 2 years before the movie. Watch the chase in slo-mo). In fact, it opened a few months to Christmas in the late 60s, and a woman wrote the owners almost immediately about an attempted purse snatching. The letters were actually found later. They made like 15 million first few years but the crime never got better, so people moved out en masse. Closed due to "external depreciation." Meaning the area is a sh*thole and no one wants to go there. Considered incurable. The *employees* actually looted the mall. "Nice place, huh?" Only 2 items were left (paperwork was found later, including the letters). 2 waterlogged LP copies of The Last Waltz by the Band. People were murdered and raped on the premises. Wild animals. Drug addicts. Total hell hole. The entire reason natives avoid the South side entirely.

    John Belushi was a legend who cannot be replaced. That said, I don't think we can argue that a sequel wouldn't have worked only because he couldn't be in it. Goodman is an amazing comedian who can play it crazy, straight, lovable, ironic, etc. a lot like John Candy. The Critic is absolutely right - they just didn't have a plot for this thing. It's hard to critique it as a film if it doesn't have the bear bones of a film. I think if they would have stuck to their guns and went for an R-rating with an actual story arc, it could have worked. I'm not sure what happened in the writing room on this, but it was disappointing to say the least. The soundtrack does kick ass. I own both movie soundtracks.

    Even I could make a better sequel. Or a prequel. Anything! Imagine this. We see how the 2 of them became musicians, how they formed their band, and ultimatley, how the band was broken apart, and even give a few nods to the original like have the opening be Jake leaving his wedding to see his brother, Elwood buying the Blues mobile, and seeing the brothers growing up together. So, does anyone think I wrote a summary for a better sequel/prequel?

    Alexander Forsythe That's the biggest problem, but we could still get a good prequel out of this. Because it wouldn't HAVE to have Dan Aykroyd, because it would be the Blues Brothers, when they were younger, as kids, teenagers, and younger adults, younger than when they were in the original Blues Brothers, like the dude above your comment was saying. But I'm not sure a good sequel could exist because as you said, John Belushi is dead. It just wouldn't be the same. I wouldn't mind if they made either a prequel or sequel to maybe tribute John Belushi in the first place, THEN, it could have a reason to exist.

  • @overlydramaticpanda

    @overlydramaticpanda

    @@shawnfields2757 The issue with making a prequel is that the roles (and general concept) of the characters were already fairly iconic even before the first movie thanks to Ackroyd and Belushi creating and performing them on Saturday Night Live. There's something about the characters that is so intrinsically linked to the two actors that it's honestly hard to imagine anyone else playing them. Honestly, the SNL run and the first movie were a good place to leave them, especially considering Belushi's death - another instalment (whether a prequel or a sequel) simply wasn't needed. If they absolutely felt the need to make one (as you say, in tribute to Belushi), then I quite like the idea a few comments up: making it about Elwood needing to get money to give Jake a decent burial, cutting the kid completely and bumping up John Goodman to a proper character instead of just "Jake 2.0". As it stands, what we got absolutely sucks especially in comparison to the original.

    When you said to remember the scenes where the kid talks, I originally thought it was to point out that the kid is convincing Elwood to go against the band (and common sense) and reigniting Elwood's problems with law enforcement by stealing the commander's wallet. He also says he doesn't want to leave, leading to poor Elwood fleeing a few hundred cops yet again. A good chunk of Elwood's misfortune and mistakes can be traced back to the kid who ruined the movie on a meta level as well.

    I spent a week working as a background performer on Blues Brothers 2000. The Ghostriders scene was done at Markham Fairgrounds in July 1997 as was the monster truck sequence. It was difficult to do because director Landis had us drenched in water from 7p.m.-whenever they finished early mornings. I did manage to speak with John Goodman a few times but found Aykroyd to be reserved and brooding at times. The soundtrack will outlive the film. It's pretty interesting to have been a part of it.They did treat us to live music at the end of the shoot. Roger Ebert did put it nicely that he's heard Toronto called a lot of things but not the place of the Blues. They got lucky in filming this that a new toll highway the 407 had just been completed and not opened yet. The production got to use it for a lot of scenes, wrecks what have you. The whole thing was done in Toronto and the majority of it's other suburbs and regions, soundstage and not in the U.S. Fun experience but disappointing film.

    John Belushi died from a drug overdose a couple of years after the original film's release, leaving the follow-up in limbo (during which time co-stars John Candy and Cab Calloway also died) for the better part of two decades. During that timespan it was widely assumed that Belushi's younger brother James Belushi would be the obvious candidate to co-star with Dan Aykroyd in a sequel. In the end however, he turned it down, ostensibly because of a schedule conflict, resulting in John Goodman being cast in the entirely new role of Mighty Mac. When Aykroyd and Landis presented their first draft script to Universal, the studio responded by saying their script was essentially just a carbon-copy of the first film, except with Belushi's character swapped out for Goodman's... which Aykroyd later admitted was actually a valid criticism. Unfortunately, what the studio did next would ultimately send the project down in flames, as they decided they wanted the film to appeal to a younger audience, and forced the insertion of a Tagalong Kid sidekick to Aykroyd and Goodman, while also forcing a Genre Shift that made the film much more overt fantasy than the first one. The actual shoot wasn't quite as problematic as that of the first film, but Aykroyd and Goodman had to work essentially for free in order to get the film produced under the less-than-adequate budget that they were given. Aykroyd and Landis became increasingly despondent due to the continued Executive Meddling throughout the shoot, which resulted in the two threatening to quit, until the studio counter-threatened them with a lawsuit for breach of contract. Still, they roughed it out, and eventually finished the shoot. Unlike the first film, 2000 was critically mauled and a Box Office Bomb, completely destroying Landis' career and sending Aykroyd into a career slump that would last well into the following decade, with Goodman probably only avoiding the same fate via his roles in the same year's hugely acclaimed The Big Lebowski and the following year's Monsters, Inc..

    I heard the original script originally had John's brother, Jim Belushi, as the next Blues Brothers member. I would find it okay that Jim's character is either Jake's long lost biological brother or at least a familiar looking face that inspires Elwood to push on since it means that Jake still lives on no matter what.

  • @RoosterMontgomery
    @RoosterMontgomery4 жыл бұрын

    The plot should have been Elwood being released and being told Jake had a biological brother named Zee, played by Jim Belushi. They meet up, replacing John Goodman, and go on a new mission to find Curtis' son Cab. Jake's death could have been explained as such: Elwood was transferred to the new prison while Jake stayed in Joliet. He simply died of a heart attack. Buster was dead weight, no need for him. Elwood, Zee and Cab are united with the band and the mission to unit them all results in the cops chasing after them after they play a magnificent gig. Not perfect, by no means great, but better. Coming from someone who once performed in a legit Blues Brothers Tribute Band.

    "The movie was killed the minute you put the kid in a suit!" Just for the record, me and my brother did Soul Man dressed up as the Blues Brothers at a talent show when we were kids, and I can assure you, we made those suits look good! But yeah, that kid looks ridiculous.

    I just rewatched the original recently and man, it’s really one of my top 10. It’s so chaotic my fun, the set pieces were insane, the chemistry between Aykroyd and John Belushi was great, and the music was fantastic. Not to mention you have energetic cameos from James Brown, Ray Charles, and even Cab Fucking Calloway! It felt like a movie that celebrated everything Chicago and music with so much love and passion put into just how batshit it got, especially with that final car chase. I still don’t know how they were able to pull off most of those stunts without somebody getting killed. This film…just feels like the studio higher ups didn’t understand what made Blues Brothers good at all. Yeah, the original was over the top, but it still felt for the most part grounded in reality and the really crazy things (Elwood and Jake surviving the building collapsing, the God scene, and even the Nazis flying sky high from a small ramp) only happened rarely, which is why they were so funny. This one went so bizarre with its gags of voodoo witches, driving through water, and ghost riders that it felt MUCH less grounded and more like some kind of fatigued drug trip. The music is fine, but a good soundtrack doesn’t make up for an abysmal script. And the kid…I’m sorry, but that’s a death sentence for any R rated classic when you try to make a kid a lead in your sequel. It can be done, but it requires effort, not just putting him in a suit and calling it a day. I heard someone say in this comment section that the original script revolved around Elwood and Mac, but it involved Belushi’s son as well trying to renovate the orphanage but the studio said no and wanted them to make this, make it kid friendly, and be more fantastical. Yeah, it would’ve been another “here we go again” story, but at the very least it would’ve stuck to how the original played out. That would explain why Aykroyd looks like he’s phoning it in; he’s basically watching his baby get butchered by the studio, without pay mind you to keep the budget down, and would rather be apathetic to it than feel something and have a mental breakdown.
