Bluegrass Banjo Lesson: "Clinch Mountain Backstep"
Музыка
Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 14:28. Guitar chords are provided on-screen.
This is an instructional tutorial 5-string bluegrass banjo lesson teaching my version of the popular Ralph Stanley bluegrass banjo tune, "Clinch Mountain Backstep."
There's an excellent video of Dr. Ralph playing this tune on Pete Seeger's folk music show back in the 1960's. Find it here -- • Ralph Stanley Clinch...
On this video I teach the tune lick by lick, phrase by phrase, using on-screen tablature, then I put it together -- slowly at first, then faster toward the end, adding rhythm guitar audio overlay and on-screen chord prompts.
Free tab sheets (PDF) and play-along tracks (MP3) for this and many other tunes are available at my website, www.littlerockbanjo.com.
Hope you enjoy.

I know that it’s been a long time since you posted this but I would just like to tell you that I am very grateful for your videos and how they’ve helped me to learn banjo. My late grandfather loved bluegrass and with every tune you, Mr. Jim Pankey and random tabs have taught me I get to remember this great man and have a great time doing it!
2am In the morning and I want to go get my banjo (even as a beginner) I just want to thank you for your kindness for sharing and encouraging us lesser mortals ! Normally play guitar but hearing this just makes me want to learn the banjo, it sounded so good , the intro played...Many thanks To you sir..

Hey, glad you're considering banjo in addition to your guitar work. Could be great fun!
What a great teacher. Will take some of your lessons in 2023. Thank you so much for these lessons online.
You are a God send to us on line wannabe Banjo players. Thank you again for your time and patient teaching method. It is wonderful 👍
Still the best banjo tutorial on You Tube. I've progressed in leaps and bounds with all your lessons. Many thanks Bill (Mike U.K)
I've become a better Banjo player because of your excellent instructional videos and tabs you post. Thank you very much! I love playing your arrangements!!
17:50 just leaving this for me. Sounds amazing man
Thanks Bill. It's just so much easier when you set it out clearly and slowly. And a good choice to follow on from Man of Constant Sorrow.
Great lesson and great picking William, thanks for helping those of us who struggle. I would just add, its been said by others your lessons are so well done it makes these tunes so easy to understand everything, the tune, the structure, the rolls patterns etc and soon gets it all into my head. IMO the best and easiest to follow teacher on youtube, many others are good banjo players but not so good at the teaching. A big thank you from the UK

Sean Martinman Couldn’t agree more. William has been a great help for me, trying to learn songs that are not familiar. I have the Scruggs Black Book to hand all the time (as well as countless others), but it’s like looking at a wall of “bricks” (notes) & tabs just don’t give me the feel of how the song should sound. I like the ‘bluesy’ notes that he feeds in from time to time. Hi from SW England.
Outstandingly clear, straightforward lesson and a very sound version - thank you!
hi William always look forward to seeing what your next banjo lesson post will be..!...yet again you have chosen a cracking one to pick..love this and guitar backup to let you hear the tune up to speed is just the best!!....Paul...Scotland..
My live banjo lessons have been suspended for virus reasons, so I'm looking forward to making the best use of your resources. I'm very grateful you share them, thanks Bill. Stay well in these trying times.
I've been waiting for this..Thanks Bill.
really beautiful arrangement of clinch, helping me progress beyond my very simple playing to some more interesting stuff. thanks....
Thanks once again William, another great tutorial.
Thank you for your help. I will listen to them . your friend, Judy Corrette in Wildwood, Fl

A great tune and excellent G option.
Thank you!
Thanks
Great videos it would be awesome to see a lesson on East Virginia Blues
I like your style of playing. I'm a beginner at blue grass . I taught myself what I could of Earl Scruggs book and record. I'm working on the rolls but hoping to make a melody of it at some point. I'll keep watching and listening to you. thank you. says Judy Corrette in Wildwood, Fl
really struggling with this one! proper challenge!!
Nice! Already starting to work on it. Thanks for all the lessons, as a beginner it really helps. Do you think you might ever do lessons for Black Eyed Susie or Mole in the ground? I haven't seen any good lessons for those. But thanks again!
Hi there! Thanks so much for this as I'd learned it totally incorrectly when I first started playing. Do you have your tab available for download anywhere?
Thanks man, really like learning from you. Do ya know the song Don't let your deal go down or Farewell blues ?
I have been learning banjo for under a year, and i think its going very well with your help. I just wanted to thank you for the amazing lessons, and i was wondering if you had a patreon or some other website that we could donate money for all the lessons. Thanks again!

Been researching Patreon and considering doing one. Thanks for the suggestion.
I realize I'm a little late to the party here, but I have to ask: Wouldn't this be easier to play out of Sawmill tuning?
Do you have tabs to this song you are playing so that I can practice at home here. asks Judy Corrette

Key of A, capo 2. Don't forget to also capo your fifth string accordingly.
I have a problem with blue gras. I know how to do the rolls pretty goo, I know how to do pull off/on , slides , hammer -on etc but, I can't seem to find the melody in any song with blue grass and that is my Major problem with that. Would you help me please tabs don't make any sense without the melody in there somewhere. says Judy Corrette in Wildwood, Fl

HI Judy, you might try going to this page -- www.littlerockbanjo.com/banjo-audio1.htm -- find the audio tracks to the tune in question -- and give a listen, especially to the faster tracks. Hopefully you would be able to better hear the melody weaving its way through the notes.
Buddy I gotta ask what’s that thumb pick you’re using I like how it’s shaped looks accurate

Thanks for the reply I appreciate what you’re doing for me I’m all self taught and your videos are helpful

I think I've seen some people pinch the first and second string on this song instead of the fifth and first . Is that just personal preference or is there a reason behind it ?
The hardest part of learning this tune for me is figuring out the intination (think that's the right word). Going from a melodic method of learning the notes in succession to playing them in the rythmic way they were intended. I keep having to go back to the beginning well before getting to the end of part A. Frustrating but hard to teach i suppose.

What is that thumb pick you are using?

It's a Blue Chip, Crowe length, Reso thickness. I use a Medium -- BCT-RESO-JDM. Worth every penny of 40 bucks, IMHO. Just don't lose it!

@@williamanesbitt Does it have a tendency to slide down your thumb like plastic thumbpicks do after playing a bit?
