Leaks tend to happen at fittings especially at the crest of a T fitting where the material is thinnest. He should demonstrate how to wrap a T-fitting with this

The demo is primarily to show how to apply the tape properly. It works on leaky joints as well. In tight spots any tape is difficult to apply, but with patience it can be done effectively. It's great for emergencies because it works.

Very informative video. I came to find this video because the package instructions didn’t explain the black tape. In the video it’s very clear that we dispose of the black strip. Since the blue tape isn’t sticky either there can exist some doubt and confusion

Whether you are a licensed plumber or an office manager this tape works IF you follow the instructions in the video. I have used it on copper, PVC and a radiator hose and it works as advertised. Excellent EMERGENCY repair solution.

If this tape works, as in the demonstration, then it's a brilliant invention. Will be trying it today, fingers crossed it works.

Had a pin-hole leak like that in a line. Just cut a 1/2" slice off of a soft-rubber auto radiator hose, then cut that circle open, and trimmed it down so that it was close to the same diameter as the pipe. I put the piece of rubber hose over the hole, put a hose clamp over the rubber, and tightened the hose clamp. End of leak. But I like this silicone tape method better, seems a lot easier. But I would still put a hose clamp over the wrapped tape just to be sure it won't 'expand' over time. But if the pipe is leaking like that then it probably is ready to burst somewhere else too, so its best to just replace the pipe with a length of new pipe. That's what I did a year later.

    Only on Cooper lines?

  • @doneal53

Misleading, yeah it will slow down a leak--a small one even if there is pressure on the line, such as your water supply line. It will slow it down enough so you can wait until tomorrow when the store opens to get the correct solution. However, it does work well on small drips in drain lines where there is no pressure.

This product works exactly as it does in the demo. You can also use it in situations that are not a "straight run" as the previous poster commented. A straight run is not required as long as you use the product as it is intended.

I just paid $40 for it and applied it just like that on 2 1/2" copper line.It slowed the leak but that is all it would do.I had to use a stainless clamp over the tape because it would "unravel" itself if I took my fingers off the compressed tape.I have been a licensed class 1 plumber for 30 years.I won't buy it again

you must not have payed attention to the video.... He CLEARLY said that this is for emergency repairs when you cannot for one reason or another shut off the water at the moment. so you use this stuff for a quick emergency repair and then come back at a time when you can shut the water off to do the actual repair.

Do a search for "silicone tape" on Amazon. There are many brands and a range of prices, and they all use the same technology. I can't fully comment on what might make one brand better than another, especially regarding material specifics, although I can say that the ones I found information for all claimed basically the same specs. Some tapes are "triangular", with the center of the strip being thickest, tapering toward the edges, and some of the triangular tapes have a central guide line/stripe to help with wrapping evenly. The tape in the video is this sort of tape. The purpose of this is so that you can produce a single-layer wrap with a more uniform thickness if you need to. The major variables seem to be the thickness (mil) of the tape, its width, whether it is triangular or not (and if so whether it has a guide stripe), and color. Other wise, they appear to all be made of the same self-fusing silicone material. I can't comment on how the material might vary in quality or properties from brand to brand. As I mentioned, the ones I found info for all seemed to have similar specs: high temperature resistance, good electrical insulation properties, and good pressure resistance (connected to tensile strength?).

Any plumber worth his salt could make this repair in less than five minutes with a pre fabricated piece of copper with two pro press slip couplings. If it is so critical that a company does not shut down, all of the water lines should have been welded stainless steel in the first place. This tape is just another gimmick to try and turn joe homeowner into a plumber for a day- even if this works on pressurized water lines, a plumber will still have to be called and paid to repair it properly. You are better off saving 40$ and getting it done right the first time.
