Blue John Canyon- 127 Hours Location
We hiked Blue John Canyon the day before "127 Hours" the major motion picture was released in theatres. It was an amazing experience, and fascinating to see the actual rock that pinned Aron Ralston for 127 hours.

I really didn't enjoy the movie tbh. It didn't carry the tone over well. The book 127 hours, on the other hand, is one of my all time favourite reads. The emotion and power in the book just wasn't really translated to screen that well, Aron is a fantastic author

We're fortunate to call this amazing landscape our office and our home. We've found no better satisfaction than that from helping to facilitate unique canyoneering experiences through Bluejohn and over one hundred other amazing canyons throughout the greater Dirty Devil/Robbers Roost Wilderness.
Aron was so brave to cut his arm off. If I was in that situation and my arm was trapped underneath a boulder I would literally just die right there.

Great video! Its amazing to see outside perspective of that place apart from Aron himself and that documentary 'Desperate Days in Blue John Canyon'. Looking at this video I can almost feel the gravity of the situation coz it seems like uncharted territory and Aron trolled right in and got trapped for 5 agnonising days!!! Uffff.... bone-chilling thinking about it!!

The big moral of the story, is never be all alone in the Desolate unforgiving land scape, always have somebody to run for help if you get trapped or badly injured, to call for the Rescue party. I seen this movie only once, I could not watch it again, because the movie brought me to tears because of the story. The sad story of being all alone for 5 miserable days.

Got two Questions for ya... On the map you show 2 rappels. First one at the beginning is "optional" right, you climb down instead? And were there any other required rappels before the "Big Drop Rappel"?

It looks like you climbed back out of the canyon rather than doing the big drop rappel. If so, how was the climb out? Easy or somewhat technical?

I just did this canyon a couple days ago, this is a great video though! I got in the west fork further north i think without any rappel. I think most of any evidence was also eroded away, I couldnt see much of anything. I also think quite a bit of the rock was removed when they removed it as well as rotating it, the rock does look quite a bit different now.

Great story. Great movie. I’m surprised this only has 655 views. In this clip when they show the actual boulder that pinned Aron’s arm what is that on the right side of the boulder (2:10)? Did they make a fake arm to show the spot where Aron was stuck or is it something else? It would be great to visit this place.

The rock you showed a picture of is not the rock that trapped him. The actual boulder was on the ground right below it (you can see it in the clip where you pan from top to bottom) where the men who moved it left it after extracting Aron's arm. If you can find his self-portrait he took, you will see that it is a different rock then the one you show
@itsdogtooth

The rock that has the log or cloth (whatever it is) lodged between it is the rock aron was at the log is supposed to represent his arm
Some might say that Aron being trapped and having to cut his arm off was misfortune. However, consider that the rock might just have likely landed on his head. As Aron himself said, he didn’t lose his arm, he regained his life.
Dreams...
So I'd like to know if you know where those boulders like the ones we see here at 0:59 came from in the first place, because it's not like ANY of these things could be moved by anything less than a earthquake, crane or a forklift yet they all appear to have fallen into their final resting place, so what was it that was responsible for getting them there because they are not part of that wall they're leaning up against.

@nelsonwyatt2002 I'm not 100% sure but I think it's just another fallen chockstone
I would never do that trek alone! Unfortunately, he violated one of the first rules of the great outdoors. Accidents happen though and I have certainly had mine. I slid off a four foot granite ledge barefoot out at a waterfall. I had contusion of both feet and it took over five months of recovery! At least I was with a party who helped me with the 2 mile trek back to the car. I still sometimes have flashbacks of the incident! You don’t forget an accident like that and the feeling of loss of control when you’re falling is very scary.
Aaron really gave an arm to get out of there.
@tekerz11 It is near Canyonlands National Park, just outside the Maze district and Horseshoe canyon.

Peter Evans Its not his arm you see - it took 13 men, a hydraulic jack and a winch to shift the boulder and to life it. The arm was removed by park services returned to Aron who had it cremated. Then 6 months after the ordeal he traveled to the boulder with a television reporter and whilst there even though it was not filmed he spread the ashes of the arm at the site of the accident. The arm was not left because it is considered a biohazard waste and there for a health and safety risk, not to mention weirdos would have gone and try to salvage bits of it or even the whole thing as a bizarre keepsake so to keep people from trying to get it and in turn putting themselves in danger it was taken out for those reasons.
