In regards to Mizus ankle, I get such an injury takes a while to heal, but when you look at Taigen, you see he has also healed quite a bit. Such a visual, along with winter being over, tells me quite a bit of time has passed. Mizus ankle injury definitely would've taken longer to heal, but at least there was a passage of time.

“They animated body parts no one has done before”. My friend there appears to be exceptionally large portions of the internet you are blissfully unaware of and I envy you for that.

We didn't invent swearing in the 20th century. Vulgarity has been common as long as we have had language.

The human brain actually stored cuss words in a separate section than usual vocabulary words. This is built into the main function of the brain. So we’ve been cussing since language first became a thing.

@@Shadow1YazI just had a thought: if an innocuous word for one generation comes to be used as a cuss word in the slang of a successive generation, or if a cuss word becomes so prevalent over time that it loses all of its “cuss potency” (for lack of a better phrase), could that partially explain why older people seem to have such a knee jerk reaction of being disgusted by younger peoples’ slang? If their neurological cuss sorting is more or less fixed, and they hear words they think of as cusses used as normal, or words they think of as normal being used as cusses, could the whole thing just be a trigger response to that “does not compute” feeling? Wow! I know this isn’t as clear as it was in my mind, but if that made any sense to you at all, I’ll be amazed.

@@anonmg1 cuss words are innately connected to class in English. Older generations tend to see themselves above all that and how the next generation is so rude, so loud and all they care about is stuffing their face in (insert new tech here) to ruin their minds! So this is more of a psychological thing than a neurological thing. Vulgar words are vulgar because they come from the vulgar (commoner people) (Also the new tech I know “ruined children’s minds” stone tablets, books, radio, TV, video games, cell phones. Seriously, books were almost banned because they make the youth violent and stop them from being able to tell what’s real and what’s fantasy)

Y’all dive into deep analysis here. First, the nudity is part of the artist’s choice in telling Blue Eye Samurai’s narrative, as Michael Boose commented. Sexuality is a significant theme, reflecting Mizu’s identity. She is neither trans, gay, nor bi. She was a woman who had to conceal her femininity to survive, and on top of that, she is of mixed race. She had a lot against her. As for the language, there are two aspects to consider: 1. Modern vs. time-period appropriate language I have seen films and shows where modern dialogue was used instead of time-period accuracy. This is common in most films and shows, as the audiences may not be familiar with the old language, not just in Asian cinema. 2. Accents. For season one of Blue Eye Samurai, the setting was Japan, so we understand that everyone, including Abijah Fowler, was speaking Japanese in this English-speaking show. However, season two alludes to Mizu heading for London, meaning she’ll be speaking Japanese with Fowler as her interpreter, relying solely on her enemy. It will be interesting to see how the show handles the language barrier.

Amber Noizumi and Michael Green (Writers/Showrunners) said in an interview that they are in fact open to the possibility of Mizu not being straight

What most people don’t know is that it takes a LOOOONG time to make a katana, sometimes even a year long!

The USA is very puritan when it comes to nudity compared to a lot of countries. From what I remember from the Bill Wurtz's "The History of Japan" video, this era of Japan was the era interested in "sexy times" (ukiyo?). So the amount of nudity might be shocking to us but it feels right for the era the show is set in.

Sure... blackening teeth seems strange... but earlobe gauging/stretching seems weird to me and it's all the rage.

I thought Warrior did an interesting effect with accent…when the asian characters talk to each other we hear prefect English from them to show us no brokenness of communication. When an Asian spoke to an American the English was heavily accented to show the difficulty in communication.

From re-watching this series, I realized that the same woman that was masked-up, behind Fowler, is the one we see later on, trying to help Akemi. That's devastating.

Why does there have to be a specific reason for nudity? Humans get naked. Being uncomfortable with the human body and needing an explanation for it, is a learned behavior. There doesn't have to be a reason to justify action or violence right? It's just storytelling. People have sex, people get naked, that's part of life, so it should be displayed on the screen, no pomp or circumstance. If you're uncomfortable with nudity, that's a personal problem, not of the people making the art.

For the way they're speaking: It didn't bother me personally at all. I don't know a lot about Japanese language history, but if it's anything like European than the common folk did speak a lot differently from nobles, very casually and probably swore a lot. I always feel like it's weird when historical pieces make Everyone speak in a very old/stitled way which we experience as period-language, cause it just doesn't reflect reality, it just sounds better. For the nudity, some of the scenes, especially in this episode, bothered me and did feel excessive. I understand a lot of the rest, we spend quite some time in brothels and I did think the village festival was a very cool and natural scene and showcased the huge difference of how noble people lived vs how common folk lived. But I guess it does serve to make Fowler seem even more unpleasant.

Why did the nudity bother you? Because the human body is something to be feared or ashamed of?

I saw another KZreadr say that the diction and spoken voice sounds very strange to Americans because it’s structured in a way that sounds like it was written and Japanese and then translated into English to be spoken, kinda of like an Anime production. Don’t know if that helps.

You guys keep missing the time jump when talking about Mizu's injuries. It was WINTER when Mizu & Tigan were injured & Ringo took them to Swordfather. After that the story picks up months later in the Spring.

To me the Randall Park character's nudity in the scene you're thinking of in this episode was to emphasize how confident he is while plotting to betray Fowler. Normally our nudity is something to be protected, I don't think many people sit around butt naked even in their own homes. So to see this character portrayed as casually legs apart and all that while he wrote this letter, communicated to me he felt zero subconscious fear or vulnerability in his location and his situation. He was completely and confidently unguarded. So yes, the visual was striking to me as a viewer, but not because I thought it was provocative to the audience, but more of what it implied at how low his concern was, because I would imagine being scared of being discovered by Fowler. Indeed, later in the episode he gets schooled on why he should not have underestimated Fowler. And I agree with Michael that the casual nudity is done thoughtfully, especially because it's been pretty equal between male and female and the bodies are also treated very casually which I like a lot. I don't think the show is trying to titillate its viewers with the nudity, to me the intent is more like normalizing male and female bodies.

It sounds like you actually want heavy asian accents on the english to make it sound more authentic. If your cast are first language english it's very hard to hear their ethnic origin, regardless. The characters despite having asian american voice actors, sound VERY american, and american is synonymous with western white person in the zeitgeist. American english is of the modern, british english is of the past and other accented english is short hand for those countries. It's the same with european voices - we tend to use heavier accented english to denote their origin even if the voice actor isn't from there. It evokes that country. They don't speak german, they just have german accented english. Your example of the swordfather is one of the few heavier asian accented voices in the show, most of the other voices just sound american. But it's a fine line between evoking asia with an accent and caricaturing it.

For me Modern vs period-sympathetic dialogue is an artistic choice. Modern will allow for impacts and pacing that sympathetic might not, but can be jarring or 'cheap', compared with sympathetic (I'd guess period-Accurate dialogue would be very hard to follow). A culture without cheap video, audio recordings has different descriptive toolboxes. You can do whatever, in my view, as long as it serves the narrative. I like that BES makes the dialog easily palatable without shedding the styling that the period would apply. It doesn't try to be super-modern.

Tbh I care very little for how they speak …it’s obviously incorrect but it’s appealing to the audience for this. In reality we really don’t know how the common person of that era conversed. All we know is from what was written down & that was rarely done in any culture in the way common people spoke. We all have an idea in our head of what we believe. I think in this it just makes the characters more relatable to the audience

The show from early on had characters do stuff that was over the top so I got used to it being a non-realistic show. Like with Mizus's foot, but also all the other injuries she suffered throughout the show.

Cussing has always been part of mankinds history but words like F*ck was likely used for the first time during the 15th century (1400)

As far as the period speak, it doesn't throw me off. We live in a modern era, so the movies and shows have to relate to how we perceive language. Jaby, I've heard you mention this before. But I don't see why it is such an issue? Because languages adapt and change over time. Modern English doesn't sound like it did during 1776, just like American English which originated from England doesn't sound like we are from Britain. Having the way someone spoke just like they did from an older time period would be like watching "The Ten Commandments" and expecting Charlton Heston to sound like Moses. I accept they are telling me a story from a particular time period, while making it relate to the current audience. Think of it this way, if you've ever watched a 50s, 60, or even 70s movie, there is a difference in speech and how it sounds. Not much but you can tell. Give it several hundred to a couple thousand years and how we sound will be different to those listening to old recordings. I'd rather watch a movie and have it sound and be relatable, than for them to try and articulate the language for a certain time period enough to be distracting. For me it is the story that I'm interested in.

Because no one is ever speaking another language. My mind is able to accept this is the language of the world being shown. I do become picky about language the moment I hear another language in the show. This doesn't include "Hunt for Red October" switches. I watch a lot of foreign media and when they have multiple languages I start to think about their speech more. Which is weird because I am reading subtitles. Yet it still distracts me.

“If you were raised that culture, why wouldn’t you just be that culture” I know this is hard for some men to understand but women actually do have brains and they do start to question the system around them when they are unhappy and feel taken for granted. Also it is because, in Akemi’s case, she has been educated. Especially by her attendant, as we have seen. Educated women will usually start to question a system built against them.

Profanity has always been around and you're hearing modern English rather than feudal Japanese. Profanity from feudal Japan would be translated to modern profanity. The fact that you find Sword Father's language more appropriate than the prostitutes might be unnecessary romanticism of the period.

Anthony, you snob! I totally agree with you 😄. Period pieces with modern speaking styles, jokes, and music (like Mizu training to the Kill Bill music) urk me and take me out of the moment. That being said, this show is so outstanding I give it a pass, but would have preferred a more pure period styling to the language and music; my only nitpick. Shogun was the best show I think I've ever seen, and its commitment to period accuracy is one of the big reasons.
