Also notice how in Demon's and Dark souls he speaks with a rather cockney accent, but in Bloodborne he speaks much more formal. Bloodborne Patches was probably a student at Brygenworth.

Connor Barclay In addition, note how he doesn't talk about blood at all. This would imply that he followed Master Willem's teachings, regarding insight as the way forward instead of blood. For the same reason, he isn't part of the Healing Church, making him as close to an atheist as possible in a game where gods are literally visible. A second thing to note is his face 1) never moves but has its mouth open, and 2) is really beat up. I don't actually know if Bloodborne NPCs normally look like they're talking, though I'd guess not, but their mouths are certainly normally closed. So, my theory from this is that Patches was once human, and someone, possibly Amygdala, killed him, decapitated him, then resurrected him with his head grafted to a spider.

Adam Bierstedt On that note, I believe ENB had stated that Miyazaki gave a little more lore for the spiders. Apparently Patches has the same origin as the spiders in the Nightmare of Mensis, however he was the only one to retain his sanity. Im guessing he was human at one point as well.

I like to think of the reason patches survived so much longer than everyone else is because of his big difference with the rest of the cast in demon souls and dark souls. Solaire wants to find his own personal sun, and when he does, he goes nuts. Big hat Logan wants to learn more magic, and when he does, he goes nuts. Etc etc. Every character has a goal, including patches. Patches wants to own everything he can get his hands on. Unlike everyone else's goal, patches will never achieve his, and it's the only thing keeping him sane. Edit: I've honestly got a theory I like more now. Patches' goal is to fuck with the player and make them give up on life. If you keep playing, he never succeeds, but if you give up, he goes hollow. The only thing keeping Patches alive is you, which is why, at the end of the world in dark souls 3, it's just you and him, side by side

Vaati made a video about him in DS3 and he said that Patches only survives that long because he resists want and greed. Solaire is desperate to find his own sun, Logan is in need of more magic and Gwyn fears the age of dark. They all fell from grace due to their greed. Patches even wields the Anti-Curse Great shield in Ds3 which can be seen as a symbol of him resisting the greed and want of the undead curse

Especially considering they conduct Inquisitions, carry spiked weapons to kill people with, beat people over the head with Bibles (as evident in DS3), use the breaking wheel (look at the Undead Settlement in DS3), they kill Undead and alleged "heretics" on their "Undead hunts". Allfather Lloyd is a charlatan who is pushing his agenda of greed, desire, power, and bloodlust. This is why the Way of White is so evil. And this is why Patches hates the Way of White. As for why Patches hates the clerics in Demon's Souls.... it's implied that Magic/Hexes come from the same source (the Old One), and Saint Urbain when referring to God... isn't really referring to God but.... The Old One. Patches knows what's up with the crooked clerics, the organized religion that's a total mess more often than not. All the more reason I like Patches. A snarky agnostic/atheist who doesn't give a fuck about what the gods want, or what the clerics want. Man should forge his own destiny.

Fun fact: A "tonsil stone" in its most typical usage is the name for the small, hard bits of plaque than can get caught in the folds of the tonsils. They typically become more common when the tonsils are diseased, in which state they also emit a mucousy pus not unlike the poison that Amygdala's head lets out. So Amygdala's name is a pretty cool pun. He is at once a harbinger of disease for his relation to tonsils, a bringer of knowledge because of his relation to the brain, but also a horror because the part of the brain that he refers to is the brain's fear/panic center.

A huge clue was missed here. When he says that he is to leave for a new God, unless you take the plunge... He is single handedly manipulating you into becoming a God. Why look for greener grass when you can just make your own grass greener? He pushes you on to make that life changing decision just for the sake of spawning a new God. Amygdala was hands down the only God like being in the entire game that lacked a primal urge to kill. The wet nurse, the pthumerian queen, the moon presence, rom, all of them are fragments of life at best. More like ghosts in action only because they seem to only have one feeling that leads them to only one goal. Amygdala seems to just be a resident of the dream. He lives off of stray players. He sees us as nothing more than nourishment only because we are to blind to see him. I mean really though, just looking at him induces instant frenzy most of the time. Why would he bother to attempt communication? And when you finally encounter him, you are making a Front on his personal territory. Patches went down into the catacombs to see the Queen. But she was mind bent by her pain and misery. On his way back out, he finds you. Suddenly it should only be so clear to him. You Must be his new God! So many beings of the infinite have fallen to you! You are superior in every way! Now take my help and go kill the sorry, bloody queen!then.. Face the moon itself and surpass yourself! Ascend to the status of a God! Become the corner stone to your own existence!! It's actually very well played out. But why make you a God? Does he just think you worthy? Maybe he has alternate motives... I mean this is Patches we are talking about. What does everyone else think? Let me know! 😄

I think Amygdala might have previously been a human that turned into a great one, because the ones you see climbing the buildings of yarnham have long, tentacle-like beards, while the amygdala you fight does not, which may indicate that the one you fight is either younger, or not a true great one. Maybe amygdala was once a hunter, guided (or tricked) by patches into becoming a great one. I'm not really sure, cuz my theory does need some work.

Lane Allen It is sound. Though I don't want to give credit to Patches for knowing a possible outcome.. but then again, he found a way to "order" Amygdalas not to kill us and send us to the Nightmare Frontier. So he must undeerstand the relation between living creatures and Great Ones in a much better way that we'll ever will. He possibly knows what humans are capable of doing (or already did), and it crossed his mind. Yet again, I would murder him before or after becoming a Great One.

I actually told him I wasn't mad at him after he asked if I was, but only because I thought that could've been the best followed up by the words. "I pity you, fool." if we were in a Mass Effect game. Still, he is more of the type of the idiotic spider. Always sewing webs, trying to catch a big number of flies, but then suddenly, a fly that's smarter than him, comes and tears his web apart, after which, as we've seen in Bloodborne, he wanders to another place and builds another web. Funny thing is, though it might be only me, but I actually heard some slight surprise in his voice as I told him I wasn't thinking ill of him. Guess he was expecting his usual 'I'mma kill you now, bitch!' and the fact that I said "Naw, we're good." basically surprised, confused and somewhat cheered him up a bit. Guess he could be kinda lonely sometimes too. Serves him right, don't take me wrong, he's an areogant little dipsh*t, who seriously deserves a good beating, but from my point of view, I pity him.

It's noteworthy that in the nightmare frontier in BB, the two NPC hunters you fight are Church hunters. One is in the black church set, and the other in the Yharnam set, which was issued to Yharnamites by Ludwig the holy blade, a church hunter. Which means he's likely trapped them both in the frontier. Being church hunters, I'd say they're at least affiliated with the in game clergy.

davirazor A really good theory I came across ties in these games with King's Field; similar to the Legend of Zelda timeline. In KF1 you play as John Alfred Forester, he eventually has to fight a giant tree-like monster as the final boss, if he fails the tree will grow into what we know as The Old One. In KF2 you play as Alexander Thornton Regginis, his quest is to defeat the black dragon Guyra. If he fails, Guyra will doom the world and will eventually allow the abominations of Bloodborne to arrive. In KF3 you play as Austin Lyle Forester, his quest is to defeat the white dragon Seath. If he fails, Seath will transform the world into a land of grey crags, however he loses much of his power and immortality.

patches most likely turned into a spider once he became a believer (prophet?) of amygdala, as amygdala shows spider-like qualities. he most likely was a student of mensis as well, as that's where he is found for the most part later on, and doesn't seem to have any sort of "ascended knowledge" like they wanted in byrgenwerth, but rather, made contact and communion with the great ones, as the students of mensis wanted
