"I had friends, but everyone died", "Beware the one guarding the door". Those lines are really clever though. The player gives him money to becoming his "friend", the same thing probably happened to all those people in the locked room, hence all of his friends being dead. Also "Patches" has the key, so he is technically the one guarding the door. You can't say the devs didn't warn us. I do think the fan-translation does get the point across.

@@BlinJe honestly I think it goes a little bit further. Patches is consistently associated with birds and skeletons. In Demon's Souls he uses the adjudicator shield (which has a bird on it), and can be found in the shrine of storms. In DS1 he has the Eagle Shield and can be found in order: in the catacombs, in the tomb of the giants, and in firelink next to the firelink skeleton enemies. In DS3 he can be found in the cathedral of the deep which is surrounded by rotting corpses, in the dlc he ultimately wields the curse warding greatshield, also known as thr Pursuer Shield. And what was the pursuers form of transport? A giant bird. Even in Elden Ring his association with Volcano Manor means an association with feasting on the dead. Throw in his bald head, consistently prominent nose, and the way his main method of killing involves waiting and pacing as someone below him wastes away and I think that Patches is consistently and intentionally designed after a vulture.

Patches always seemed like your only real friend. It’s only through him that you get access to some of the best weapons and armor sets in the souls games. He’s just got a strange way of showing affection. He gives you access to unreachable areas and items that can get you through the rough spots.
@BlinJe

haha not to mention in DS1 he's the only character with a good read on the others. He warns you about Lautrec, and correctly says the cleric guy is scum. (cleric then goes on to kill lady Rhea)
He's not "Patches" per se, but i think the first appearance of the trope might happen in Dragon Quest IV. There's a quest where the player character is competing with NPCs to recover an item, and at one point an NPC tells you to look at some treasure below the ledge you are on, and then he kicks you down. Blew my mind when it happened! I know Miyazaki is a Dragon Quest fan, so maybe that's why he has been so adament on keeping the trend alive, even if he didn't necessarily introduce it to the from repertoire

@@greenhowie Well he did close the door behind you right after you meet him, trapping you in an area with a ridiculous zerg rush of enemies.
One of the central themes of the Shadow Tower games is conflict. In the first Shadow Tower, your character is a mercenary. He returns home after his battles only to find his hometown desolate and sunken into the Shadow Tower. Inside, he faces monsters, but among them are soldiers and kings of long-lost conquests to claim the tower and its crown. In Shadow Tower Abyss, it retains this theme in the modern era. Your character is once again a mercenary, and is hired for a job. But it's a trick and he was only meant to be sacrificed and left for dead. The villagers have performed this rite many times, seemingly for centuries. Relics of battles from every era can be found littered throughout the tower's layers. Our "Patches" in Abyss seems to be a war veteran, a man sacrificed to the Shadow Tower before your character. His mind never truly left the battlefield, and he has turned on friend and foe alike, using his cunning and vicious traps to survive. He's lived that long in the tower for a reason. He's clever enough to get the upper hand on Rurufon. He's the perfect kind of person to succumb to the spear's allure. He doesn't want to escape like the protagonist does. He is far more at home in the endless battle of the Shadow Tower than he is in a civilian life.
It´s worth mentioning that his kick in DS 3 Ringed City actually helps you if you followed his questline. Giving you a short cut to where you need to go. As for Elden Ring, you can find him multiple times through out the game.

Great video mate! According to my Japanese dictionary No Count ノーカウント is an obscure sporting term which indicates that a goal or point did not count. You can say パッチ or 継ぎ in Japanese for patch, both are in common use but it may depend on what kind of garment the patch is on as to which one you use. The money is called クーン in Japanese so they could have written it as Kuun but I see why they didn't. I imagine the Shadow Tower fan translation is very accurate because the sentences are very short. Some of the lines look tricksy to translate because they end in ellipses and are up to the reader to guess the meaning...

Excellent work, man! I think the first true Patches started from Shadow Abyss.
This is really cool. You can see the development of the character across all these games. Man, From really is an interesting developer, even before Miyazaki. I used to really hate Patches in Souls but once you find out how the Clerics abused him I felt a lot more empathy for his character. Truly complex - he's not really good or bad - he's like a Ying Yang hurricane. And like someone else said, surviving on the Souls universe would be absolute hell. So he embodies the trauma, much like Crestfallen Knight, would really inflict on a regular person's mind. And if you don't think it's possible to turn into someone like him, Lautrec, or Crestfallen, just read accounts sailors lost at sea. Even the toughest people turn into psychotic cannibals when left without water and food for weeks. And although they're not locked an actual island, the characters in Souls are stuck in purgatory with monsters that's a lot like an island.
I think it's worth pointing out that the Patches mecha's flag in Master of Arena is really similar in shape and colors to the one in the Champion's Bones icon, obtained at DS3's Lapp's quest ending One noticable difference though is that the first one shows a bird, maybe an eagle, and the second one a lion

Another fromsoft staple i noticed besides major ones is people turning into monsters or usually dragon's eternal ring has this. but also technically started in king's field 1 (jp) cuz of the final boss.
I think the fact he keeps popping up, going as far back as the OG ps1, says a lot about how much of an impact he made. He's akin to Gilgamesh in Final Fantasy, he has his OG appearance in FF5 and he clicks with not only the playerbase, but also the devs, so he keeps returning, to the chagrin of newcomers and the delight of old players. It's beautiful, really, I can't wait to get got by the weasel bastard in each new game.

super cool to see aspects of From Soft's quest system that they would go on to use in the souls games here in this game. Stuff like interacting with the guy at various points only for certain triggers to move him along. Patches keeping those same old tricks in any form or era. And yeah the one in Master of Arena is a bit strenuous since its just an arena fight, the only thing you can link to future iterations is that his Emblem is a shield with an Eagle Crest which was Patches' shield in the Souls titles.

There was a kings quest character that reminded me of patches but idr which one, probably 4 cos it's full of npcs. Idk if he was meant to be the same guy or if it was just a connection I drew... I just started reading berserk and its nuts to me how often I'll see a character or monster and immediately remember something in dark souls that obviously took inspiration.
Yes the perfect angle that's what I've been waiting for plus you sound slightly like vaati

I don’t, i’m just British
Would be hype as hell if Patches become an actual boss in a future FromSoft game that has memories of every game that he was in.

Just hope he isn't wearing his lapp armor
I played Echo Night, Kuan, Bloodborne and Dark Souls. but the From game that broke me, made me quit in a fury of (permanent) rage was Cookies and Cream. I can still hear the title music.
I litterally thought this was gonna be about the first bug fixes
Certified Patches Classic
Thought this was a video on the idea of patching games and was rally confused for a bit

Thank you for telling the time when you give the answer
The master of arena patch has the falcon emblem. A recurring theme from a lot of patches owo
I love how Patches at this point has passed novelty to be almost a sisyphean effort... yet it shows a kind of joy in fate. Doing something you know will be bad simply because it means interacting with someone else in these bleak empty worlds. Of course being the "protagonist" of these games is a shield a bit, must be much more frightening for someone who is not functionally immortal like the player is in these games but still. It's fascinating gaming design, very archetypical.
I havent gotten around to playing shadow tower yet so when he pulled out a gun and shot the proto patches i laughed out loud
