Oscar Tijerina it should. Excellent acting and very good portrayal of emotions. The fact that 20% of the conversations are in Spanish and characters like miklo and Popeye were rather seen as comedians on the movie, made the film not being taken as seriously as it deserves. But most of the actors were really good and the movie has an excellent plot

"DO YOUR FUCKING JOB!!!" The acting in this film is once in a lifetime. I've cried every time and I dont consider myself a softie.

It's a literal crime this didn't win some award. This scene was amazing. You could feel the pain and it was hard to watch without tearing up.

This is the best acted scene in the entire 3 hour long movie. "Do your fu#$&*g job"!!!!!! "You cant come here anymore unless your gonna bust me"

Along with the dialogue and the acting, the art itself in the background speaks a lot to me. The blues and blacks and purples, the imagery and themes, the fact his friend says hes been painting that piece again and again and again, hes extremely tormented by the loss of his little brother and is trying to vent his guilt and sadness of it all. That its his way of repenting, even if it means painting it over and over and over, the truth that he was a part of his little brothers death, the guilt he feels and the strange comfort he feels about exposing himself to his own demons. And the fact Paco comes along and only sees the drugs and the dead brother and tells Cruz that he has no right to paint him is like saying he has no right to heal and to mourn and to grieve. Cruz knows this and feels that way too, but its as if he'll do anything for his family to be happy, wether it be allowing paco to arrest him, or keeping away from his family, painting the truth of his involvement in his brothers death and cutting out his face after Paco disapproves. Like its just so heart breaking I feel for both brothers. Maybe Cruz more but ultimately all three just want their family back its just heartbreaking.

I definitely paid attention to the changing events of this movie. At the beginning during that late 60s early 70s East LA Chicano era, how everyone was at their height. Cruzito loved art and always had a big heart, he could of made it big at that time and kept Juanito out of trouble. Paco turned his life around, but I guess at that time he could of been a boxer potentially and young Miklo with the right influence would of found his way. Even though it was a gang mentality, Vatos Locos for one thing did mean family. Now, sadly at this point, Vatos Locos were dead. Now there just a bunch of burnt out junkies in this video. Paco and Cruzito fell out over the accidental death of their little brother and Miklo got brain washed by the prison system and lost all of his potential of what could have been. Good thing Cruzito turned it around in the end and even tries to help Paco get rid of his personal guilt and probably some self hatred for everything that happened throughout the movie

You can see the hurt in Cruz's eyes when Paco said he didn't have the right

wooooow. i was watching the movie and the acting is outstanding. cruzito is super good and paco too. makes me cry every time. the movie has a little bit of everything. hope i could shake cruzitos hand.. very very very good acting. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

You can feel the pain inside of both of them so much. This scene was always amazing

I spent 10 years in prison, so it's kind of hard not to notice the unrealistic portrayal of prison in this movie.Even milkweed allowing his boss to rip him off. A real prison/organized gang would have terrorized him and made him pay miklo back with interest.However the acting in this movie was incredible. The music,the story. I found myself hating certain charcters(Paco,popeye),feeling sorry for others(cruz),rooting for others(milkweed).The little boys death is almost impossible to watch. I think anytime a movie makes u hate characters, or root for others,it means the actors did their job. This movie is an absolute classic!

The prison gang leader, who asked Miglo “where do you think your trespassing to”, when Miglo tried to offer his pork chop. He actually was in a prison gang and saw the politics of the gang leaders first hand.

They dont make great movies like this anymore. Its sad. Everything too much Hollywood. This movie and boyz n the hood were amazing movies that capture the real life. I love watching these movies. If u tell me u havent seen this movie i will pop it in n watch it. Lol how many of us know a chuey

Such a powerful scene out of so many in this magnificent movie. It's an absolute sin that none of these actors received any awards for their unbelievable and powerful performances. It is also a sin that the director Taylor Hackford received absolutely nothing for this film. I remember having this movie on VHS tape and passing it around at my job at the time to a few different people. Every single one of them told me what an awesome film it was From its emotional and powerful acting, from virtual unknowns actors and actresses back then, to its powerful messages this film goes down in history as one of the greatest and most underrated films ever.

Xilo said it! That scene is the best and captures the struggle within it. From Chuy's "John Wayne" comedy relief piece to Cruzito's & Paco's struggle with the loss of innocence (Juanito). The hole left behind by the loss of innocence is in their personal life's canvas that can never be replaced or painted over.... Both Paco & Cruzito are unable to complete their "jobs" because of that hole. Cruzito's words capture the emotion. Simple & innocent pain.

Cruzito cutting the painting he worked so hard out of anger..the fallout with his brother..and the gesture of regret by caressing the cut he made on his painting..it was a brilliant scene.

When you literally can feel the emotions from the scene you know it's great acting..

I always thought Cruz was the oldest. I wish they would release the 5hr version so maybe we could find out how Miklo ended up in Vegas with his dad and what happened to Cruz's mother and how his dad met his step mom.

I’m going to have all my kids watch these movies when they’re in middle school. Why? To open their eyes to reality and the system.

This is an Iconic scene.. the way they submerge into their character had me believing every bit of this moment.. I felt sad for Cruz and yet I also felt for paco… that’s how you know the acting is at its best.. when you forget their are actors…..

1:45 and up the shit gets real, true life story acting there, I remember watching this at the Theater, everyone got Quiet and was like Chale Homes, esta Gacho ESE!! Very Real and True Movie.

A year later my welita passed away from a broken heart. I was locked up on my birthday when I found out. Tomorrow is my birthday the day I was born and the day my welita went home to be with the lord.

Especially close to the end where Cruz and Paco are reminiscing, standing near the Mural of them when they were young. When Paco tells Cruz. That he hated Miklo for the path he chose to walk and for what he had become in the process. I could relate to that feeling on a deeper personal level.

I grew up in Southern California in the hood in the early 90s this is all you saw every single day every single day putasos , people getting shot , jumped drybys, arson , shoot outs , some one got ran over in front of me and my little homies and the driver pulled back forward back forward repeated till he thought the job had been done needless to say that day changed my life cops everywhere everyone crying hood people panicked as fuck weeks after it’s a crazy world my dude it’s a crazy world .

If it wasn't for paco being a badass in the beginning Cruz would have never got jumped and never got addicted to drugs for his back pain. Miklo would have never went to jail and lost his leg and more importantly Juanito would still be alive. Paco should have turned the gun on himself like he turned his back on everyone else.

You know they had already started with part 2 but lost funding. The story is crazy! Paco the most hated somehow does something wrong and ends up in prison! Miklo is a huge shot caller and paco has to decide what is he gonna do? Join or probabaly get killed! Cruzito unfortunately in part 2 dies of a overdose! I know jesse borrego live 2 houses down from his parents here in san antonio. Thats what he told us happens or would of in part 2

He really owed Miklo, Miklo stopped him from shooting spider in the head. If Miklo didn’t stop Paco from killing spider he would be the one doing life in prison and Miklo would be free. He did owe him and shooting his leg off was wrong of him even if he was just doing his Job. Family is more important then a Job and in reality Miklo saved Pacos life.

Extremely underrated acting!

One of the best movies ever. 3:02 is the saddest to me because they have to deal with the grief even after that harsh argument amongst brothers.

Cruz should have won an Oscar . Infact this film should have won a lot of awards
