Blocking People in Real Life: Tom Scott at An Evening of Unnecessary Detail

I'm not saying this would be a good idea, and it's definitely not a prediction of the future. It's just a story. I think.
An Evening of Unnecessary Detail runs once a month from January to June at the Backyard Comedy Club in London: thanks to all the team there, including Matt Parker and Hannah Fisher! Tickets at aeoud.com

@@matu.ayrton It's a feature of scientific and other academic writing that it should not be told with narrative - the information should be communicated as effectively and efficiently as possible. Part of this means that the 'abstract' of an academic paper is a succinct, but ideally complete, summary of the paper. Not like a trailer for a movie which deliberately omits information so that they can not spoil the story. Even if you still don't understand - I promise it really was absolutely Hilarious!!! fully cracked me up.

In VR, you can block people, which is what it would feel like to block people in real life. Sometimes you see someone talking to someone not there(usually angerly), and then you have to figure out if that person is insane, or if you previously blocked the person they are arguing with.

Holy hell this is morbid. Not only is it realistic, its horrid. Blocking people/ideas from existence entirely is a selfish and childish thing to do, yet I could imagine so many people looking at something like this eagerly. Even to my worst of enemies, I would not wish them to be blocked. I might want them to be in the short term, but that's one of those primal instinctive urges that we fight against is it not? Tom Scott, I thank you for opening my mind to understanding this idea and its lack of merit. I hope in future you can help others to understand a possibly less terrifying concept.

dgmcl3284 not necessarily, blocking some people could help with keeping your sanity. I think that as long as we don't block memories and ideas, and nothing is mandatory we're not gonna have that big a problem. The problem is rather that, if we look at today's internet, Google is tracking you on over 90% of sites on the internet, they can do this because their ads are everywhere. Similarly we shouldn't fear that things become mandatory to block, rather that various services require you to block certain things, or that they require access to change what you're blocking to use them. This way almost nobody will not be blocking those things since it's so inconvenient to avoid these services
