An Evening Of Unnecessary Stations
Thanks to those nice people at Festival Of the Spoken Nerd for inviting us along to their "An Evening Of Unnecessary Detail" night, where nerds meet comedy! It's a regular occurence with different guests each time.
Website here: www.tickettext.co.uk/aeoud/
Thanks to Matt Parker for having/hosting, and huge thanks to to 'Merch Dan' for coming up with some of these words facts for us!
Oh, also ... "No stations with 19 letters", is of course a joke and there are several 19 lettered stations. Can you name some of them in the comments below?

"what's your nearest station?" "[station in Isle of Wight]" "we've.... not been there...."
That bloke in the bottom of shot must be a genius, Isle of Wight Joke and all (it's me actually :) )

"That's good, right? It took me hours!" "But what does it mean?" As a history graduate student who has just completed a lengthy project about the former land holdings of a defunct manufacturing company, I feel this exchange in the very marrow of my bones. :)
Geoff and Vicki, that was BRILLIANT. I enjoyed every minute of it. Superb.
Vicki is such a delight.
And the true star still shines, Go Vicki! #AllTheCastles

Is that not the Traveling Salesman problem, and therefore doesn't have an "efficient" solution? (i.e. requires brute force or guesswork)
So there's a Hope in England and a Hope in Wales. Does that mean Scotland is Hope-less?

Well there was an Earl of Hopetoun, I don't know if that is actually a place.

I often get comments "I live in hope" and have to constantly tell people that Hope is in Derbyshire, a long way from where they live.
Bangor will have 19 letters, seeing as there's a post box on the platform... I'm sorry.
The Left bank two whistling during the 50 station names cracked me up so hard!

James Funnell I can only apologise, it was me!
This is genuinely one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. You two are naturals.
Absolutely loved this! Thanks for sharing! I always seem to miss when you announce shows like this 😣 I need to peel my eyes.
This is utterly delightfully nerdy!
That looked like a lot of fun (and a lot of hard work) but it was brilliant to watch. Keep up the good work, y'all!
Another brilliant talk, was sorry to have missed it, so really pleased they recorded it. Stunned how quickly they got the anagrams right!
Superb! Thank you and thank you to whoever captured this :-)
Terrific! Thanks for posting that!
You two work brilliantly together. Superb show.
A really slick, very enjoyable presentation. Love the humour
Geoff and Vicky are so cool. I wish I could have met them on their 2017 journey🤣🏴
Thanks for uploading, I had been tempted to try to attend this when you announced you were doing this one but its a bit of a mission from Cornwall just for a few hours
didn't realise I'd enjoy a video on train stations this much but i loved every second of this.
Of course. Thank you for reminding me of this. I had forgotten Episode 13!
Great video, loved it and I wish you could do more
Brilliant, love the humour in what some might think is quite a dull challenge
Totally ingenious. And so funny. Brilliant.
You guys are blimming brilliant in this
8:32 that's exactly what I shouted to my computer at that point.
The two Hope stations The one in Wales is served by Transport for Wales. The one in England is served by Northern and East Midlands Railway I also liked the crowd reaction when they found out Llanfair PG wasn't the longest station name
The Station CRS codes there are 4 which are just the same letter. CCC - Criccieth, LLL - Llandeilo, SSS - Sheerness-on-Sea, and WWW - Wootton Wawen
This is fantasticly nerdy! Hillarious!

Brilliant, well done guys
For some peculiar reason I felt the urge to also shout the name of my local station at my unresponsive screen😢
Very impressive. Good work!
Horley Morley! I love it when you put your comedy shoes on folks! :)
Thanks, a very funny set!
One word, BRILLIANT,
Sounds like it should be made into a tv series. Great fun
Loved it, so funny, just my sense of humour .
This must be getting close to being the ultimate train nerd video. Nice. :)
Woah, wait - Is that Matt Parker from StandUpMaths?

Yup! He runs a show called "an evening of unnecessary detail" and we were one of the guests.
Enjoyed this a lot 😊
That was delightful!
I enjoyed that. Thanks.
Brilliant. Think I might have to borrow some of those for a local quiz night.
There is a rail service in South east queenland australia that stops at 51 stations. Early morning rosewood to nambour service (roughly 162km in length, runs part express)
Most amusing - thanks for sharing G & V.

I fell out of my chair laughing. there are two G & V's. what were they doing during that event?
That was wonderful.
I tried to do Aberdeen-Penzance last autumn but we got terminated at Exeter St David's due to the sea coming over the track at Dawlish. We had to swap from a Voyager to a HST. It's longer in miles (770) than the sleeper
That was awesome!
Great video!
The dropbox link might be handy in the description, too ;)
Fantastic video Geoff and Vicki... so sad not to have been able to make it :-( Love it at 3:38 when Vicki say's you mean............
I really want to see the results of the heart of Wales Challenge! Make sure you post it!

Geoff set this challenge to his KZread followers when he posted the video last year. I found a way to do it in three days: kzread.info/dash/bejne/npVsscqYitvHd5c.html&lc=UgiXMzxgheWSt3gCoAEC. I didn't get a prize :'-(

I managed to find a way to do it in less than two days when the problem was originally posed (see twitter.com/gasheadsteve/status/881665913573056513 ), but I think it's possible to optimise it even further. I didn't get a prize either if that's any consolation :)

I've not been to the Uk and will probably never ride the trains there but I love Vicki & Geoff
Owwww my face I just spent 17 minutes grinning 😁 this is not natural I might be stuck like this forever 😁
Imagine all the stations pre beeching axe...........
Brilliant
You two must get your own TV series... and hopefully I can watch it in the States. Love you both! Sandy from Baltimore, Maryland, USA (home of the birthplace of the Railroad in the United States)

@@SamSitar the only reason their format works is because it's NOT TV. Television is dead/dying and anything that's worth watching these days is online.
sort of thing you watch and enjoy on a wet evening in Makarora. Thanks xx
Fun video, but Dalreoch and Bridgeton are in Scotland [/nerd], Glad to see more content from ATS!
Another with 19 letters? Perhaps somewhere on the network should be named 'Vicki & Geoff junction' after the great work they have done promoting the railways?
Ahh, a great evening it was. Apart from ATS being the obvious highlight was the guy who did a synthesised looping of Axel F on his cheap 1980s keyboard.

Great video by the way. Wish it was longer. Maybe plans to do another routine sometime soon. I know you are busy with other jobs and things.
"Horley/Morley" , I'll always remember that 😂
Great video/talk. Did you ever get an answer to the Heart of Wales line problem?
Milton Keynes Central, 19 letters. (One of my) Local station(s)

I’ve always been fond of this name, Milton Friedman and John Maynard Keynes are two of the most famous economists.
Oooo, looks good!
Five Auckland train stations in a row with the same number of characters. Pukekohe, Papakura, Takanini, Te Mahia, Manurewa. Each has 8 characters including spaces.
11:15 - I know want to go to Crewe station to see how long it takes the station announcer to read out all the stops for that train.

Funniest thing I heard was the station announcer at Lancaster announcing all the stations on the West Highland Line from Glasgow Queen St to Mallaig. This was 30 years ago now so i forget why. But being from Fort William the butchering of some of the names was fantastic
Nice. Seeing as if it feels like you haven’t Uploaded in what seems like ages (Even though it’s Only been 2 Weeks lol) it’s great to see a new video by you guys. Currently still Watching 👍

Hehe! That was great! :)
Mundrunoc = Conundrum Tie-in to the 9 letter conundrum for Countdown
Brilliant laugh 😂
Changing the letters of station names sounds a bit like a poem to me 😂👌🏼
Stations where you change the 1st letter to get another station name which wasn’t on there is Alton/Olton.
Loved this! You guys were fantastic! One plea for subtitles! It's so hard to hear some things that are said, particularly audience shout outs.
Worcestershire Parkway x Reston (new station in Scotland) = BERWICKSHIRE PARKWAY (19 letters). A plausible suggestion!
So seeing as "all the heritage railway stations" was at the top of the list are you going to do "all the heritage railways and castles" at some point.... Please do!
My claim to fame: I’ve been getting the 17.20 Crewe to Cardiff Central - luckily just for the first couple of stops! - regularly over the last few weeks... So sadly (?) I already knew that it was 50 stations!
1:32 LEYTON AND STRATFORD
I hope that one day I'll find someone who looks at me the way I look at Vicki.
Striling
Horley morley, that was excellent! I should have gone :-/
Cool video!
Dalreoch is just outside Dumbarton (pass through it going to Glasgow) and Bridgeton is I think in the East End of Glasgow - creepy area!
Wonderful and funny. Wish I could have made it!
Now you have completed a 19 letter station with Leixlip Louisa Bridge!
Liverpool Lime Street Birmingham New Street St Keynes Wishing Well (if the word Halt doesn't count) Milton Keynes Central Bradford Interchange Stourbridge Junction ("It's The Cutest Train I've Ever Seen!") That's all I can think of at the moment.

19 letter railway station ~ Geoff and Vicki Castle
Newquay Station, my local!!
Have you guys ever thought about doing the Tyne and wear metro? , I live next to the network , its amazing!
There is a 19 letter station in Northern Ireland: Great Victoria Street (if that counts :p)
