Do roots mean a damaged pipe system which let the roots enter in the first place, or can it be normal? And do the roots themselves cause (further) damage to the pipes or just cause blockage?

Maybe you know the answer by now, but anyway: Obviously they "smell" water everywhere and grow underground at least to the size of the tree they belong to, so they're everywhere! If the pipes are not perfectly sealed, they will start entering through tiny gaps and slowly widen it. They've got time on their side! But obviously they always come back and over time they can do substantial damage. Nowadays perfectly sealed pvc-lines should do the job.

Just wondering how much is a regular drain call cost in your area

They were cleaning a rainwater drain that empties into the street. The drain cover at 2:07 is probably a poop sewer and isn't connected to the drain they were cleaning.
