Bliss, An Open Source Android-Based OS That Runs On A PC

Ғылым және технология

I'm taking a quick first look at Bliss, an Android-based OS that claims to run on phones, tablets, laptops and PCs. Today, I'm installing it in a VM. Thanks, Jesper, for letting me know about Bliss!

    That "Set Orientation" app that is in your app drawer should fix the unwanted rotation. You just launch it and choose Landscape from the dropdown

    This could get really interesting as gaming in VMs is always a bit of a problem, but since the games are optimized for lower spec hardware it could work quite well. If Virtualbox doesn't deliver the expected performance, maybe it could be interesting to try it in KVM as the drivers are part of the kernel and therefore should have better compatibility.

    I run android x86 on my Lenovo thinkpad x230 and it works perfectly. All hardware recognised, Bluetooth etc.. No screen tearing or audio problems something I always have to contend with whenever installing linux on the same laptop. I tried Bliss x86 but there is a problem with my hard disk caching constantly so that performance suffers. If I format an ext4 partition and disable journaling it fixes the issue with android x86 but the problem still persists with Bliss, making it sadly unusable for me. But yes would definitely recommend android x86 or Bliss if your hardware supports it.

    These launchers were probably more like "Desktop style". When I tried Android x86 there was something like it named "Taskbar".

  • @BlissLabs

    @BlissLabs

    5 жыл бұрын

    distroverse Taskbar is included in BlissOS and we have worked with Taskbar's developer extensively. This video doesn't show the true Desktop experience that is achieved by using a rotation lock app via the Play store, as well as the TaskBar launcher which is setup to handle resizeable Windows out of the box. If only he'd chosen it instead of the Pixel Launcher 🤔

  • @FreeScience

    @@BlissLabs I'm pretty sure you don't need an app to lock the system to a specific rotation. It's in the android settings. But perhaps as you are likely to have a deeper knowledge of android than I do, there are still quirks with the setting so that it may be overridden by application.

    Craig Lillie in part because a brand name and a model is just the beginning. There are often several variations of the same model which have different hardware inside, depending on the carrier it is intended for or it being a CDMA or GSM network capable device. #StayBlissful 👍

    Hey Distrohuggers, I am starting Day # 2 of my Tumbleweed install on hardware. I have been learning about zypper and YaST and the history behind Opensuse. Opensuse has a more complicated history than most other distros. I finally understand what S.u.S.E. stands for. Although SuSE has been around since the early nineties, it was just a German translation of Slackware. It wasn't until about 2011 that things really got rolling. The company that owns SuSE ( owns other stuff too ) just sold for 2.5 billion dollars. Zypper seems to work fine. But it is more complicated than DNF. For example, if you want to remove the dependencies of a package then you have to let zypper know the package is a "pattern." Patterns are slightly different than metapackages. The cool thing about patterns is you can install something like xfce as a pattern and it allegedly knows to install everything. One cool feature of Zypper is it comes preinstalled with shortcuts "in" = install , "rm" = remove, "dup" = dist-upgrade. YaST has so much options buried in it that you would need a full tutorial or maybe even a computer class in college to understand it all. It has been a few days, since I removed my SSD with Fedora Rawhide. I will probably plop that back in, do an update and try to see how far ahead it really is of my Tumbleweed install. Tumbleweed already has the latest Mesa 18.1.5. I would say Tumbleweed appears more stable than Rawhide. It is like having 2 girlfriends, one who likes to take Tequila shots and another that is content just to drink Smirnoff Ice.
