I set out on a narrow way many years ago Hoping I would find true love along the broken road But I got lost a time or two Wiped my brow and kept pushing through I couldn't see how every sign pointed straight to you That every long lost dream led me to where you are Others who broke my heart, they were like Northern stars Pointing me on my way into your loving arms This much I know is true That God blessed the broken road That led me straight to you Yes, He did I think about the years I spent just passin' through I'd like to have the time I lost and give it back to you But you just smile and take my hand You've been there, you understand It's all part of a grander plan that is coming true Every long lost dream led me to where you are Others who broke my heart, they were like Northern stars Pointing me on my way into your loving arms This much I know is true That God blessed the broken road That led me straight to you Yeah And now I'm just a-rollin' home Into my lover's arms This much I know is true That God blessed the broken road That led me straight to you That God blessed the broken road That led me straight to you

This song reminds me of all the good in my life because it uses intentional pauses to build to the next note and add emotion much like the Lord does. We may be in an intentional pause right now or in the middle of a chord but wherever we are in life He is with us as we wait for the next emotional note. But work is involved, the hammer must hit the string and the finger must touch the key. The work may hurt like the hammer or may be a gentle guide like a finger on the key but He is the musician and our song will be perfect if we trust Him.

I’ll admit that has a long time fan of Jon Schmidt, I was ready to hear this completely disassembled (in a GOOD way) and rebuilt like his incredible arrangement of, “Can’t Help Falling In Love,” but nope...Jon completely stripped it down naked instead and let each note sing for itself. Once again, I’m blown away.

This is what I needed today. Music is so healing. My mother sold our piano to make ends meet when I was 4 years old. At the time she didn't know how much I wanted to learn to play. I never got lessons or have had the chance to own another in all these years. I taught myself to read some music in high school but mostly learned a few songs by ear. Anytime there is a piano I have to sit and play a few chords with a melody I remember. It's like coming home but at the same time losing yourself in another world. There is just something about the piano that makes my soul warm and healed.

Watching this from Nova Scotia Canada, after a horrible mass shooting last week. We are all feeling a little broken and fragile right now and not being able to gather together to grieve and support each other just makes things a little more bleak. This song brings tears, but also the reminder of how these roads lead us to where we need to be. And as a side note, your rendition of Fight Song/Amazing Grace has been circulating here as well. We are ‘New Scotland’ with strong ties to our Scottish roots. Thank you for being a beacon in a dark time.

Jon is an amazing pianist that is no doubt. however, as a fan and a long time violist, i can feel jon's sadness still play thru the song. I can definitely say that i believe that she wants him to be happy and not sad. #rememberannie

How amazing is it that something you need comes along right when you need it? I’ve been struggling for a while. Everything with this virus, my college courses getting moved online, being an essential worker-working on the front lines to care for the people who are sick, being told that a professor, who I was close to when I was obtaining my bachelors degree in music, was just placed in hospice care because of a quickly degenerative brain disease. It’s been a very tough couple of months. Thank you Jon for posting something so wonderful as a reminder that as hard as things can be, there is a reason for it and something good will come from it. I definitely needed this message today.

Andrew Hill - I’m so sorry to hear that Andrew. I can’t fully imagine how it must feel for you, but I do get it, a little. I graduated just a few years ago, and I still remember high school as one of the best times in my life (which I know is contrary to what others have felt!), and I’m so sorry for all you missed out on. But! There are better days and better opportunities coming your way, until then, congratulations, and keep hoping for the best. :)

Wow, Andrew. That is an aspect of this pandemic I had not even thought of until you said it. You are missing out on your senior prom, high school annual signing party, and all the fun that is unique to your last year of high school. I am so sorry to hear that. I know it is of little comfort right now, but in a few years you won't even think about it that much. High school, and all of my high school friends, used to be my whole world. A few years after graduation I continued to associate with very few of them, and the details of high school had all but faded from memory. Of course I still love my high school classmates, but life takes us all in different directions. It will for you too eventually. That doesn't ease your pain at the moment, I know, but it will be your saving grace once all of this is over and we resume life as normal again. Maybe you could head up a committee to organize an annual signing party once this is over, and in doing so, you could reclaim at least a small part of what you are missing out on. We have to be creative and do what we can to overcome and not allow this evil virus to rob us of the things that are important to us. Forgive me for rambling, but I am trying to find words to ease your pain. I hope I haven't failed. I wish you all the best that life has to offer, Andrew. One last thing, Andrew. God does bless the broken road. I know this because I am a terminal cancer patient, and He has blessed me in countless ways as I wait to go to the land that knows no cancer. Throughout all I am going through, He has made the quality of the time I have left amazingly wonderful. He will bless your broken road too.

Senior year, or what was supposed to be, was one of the worst years of my life. My class and friends graduated and walked, but I had to work to pay bills so my options were be expelled or drop out. I'm 30 now. I never expected to live to this age. And it was worth every step. When it's hard, so hard you have no idea how you'll do it, just take one more step. You've taken many steps before, and you probably can take one more. Before you know it you'll be a year, five years, ten years in the future wondering "how did I do it?" and you'll realize you did it because of your own resilience, strength, and because you always took one more step.

I play bass guitar but I think the piano is my favorite instrument to listen to. Such a wide range of frequencies available from 1 instrument. From the low, almost thunderous, emotive notes, to the high, piercing notes. Just so many sounds & “feels” you can get from it.

Thank you Jon. Your music has such a comforting, soothing effect on my soul. We too lost our daughter at the prime of her life. She passed away with a brain tumor at age 40. When I learned about your daughter, my heart went out to you, for I know how heartbreaking such an experience it is to go through. Your music helps me get through those hard days, with a reassurance we will see her again, & that the Lord knows of our pain. Thank you for your music!

There's just something about the sound of a piano being played with so much emotion. It's truly amazing!! This is truly beautiful and expresses so much emotion from you but also envokes so much emotion in the listener as well. I love how you have made each verse different based upon what the words say. It really and truly reflects the meaning of the song without words. Someone who didn't know the words would get the idea and feeling of the song without knowing what it was supposed to be about just through the feeling you put into it. It somehow makes you feel melancholy, reflective, but also hopeful all at once. You are truly amazing!! I hope to become half the musician and pianist you are one day!! Thank you for sharing!! I really look up to you. You're an inspiration!
