    Hi Lads thanks for the video, I would like to add my experience of doing this job as when it won’t start it’s quite depressing. I have just replaced the injector seals and obviously I now have air in the diesel system. I connected everything back up and pumped away but the bulb never got really hard and I could hear air inside the fuel filter. After pumping away no chance the engine would not fire. Heres my solution. Remove the bleed screw on top of the fuel filter and using a small funnel fill the chamber completely with some diesel. You will need to push a round screwdriver into the plastic drain hose first or it will run out. Replace the bleed screw and tighten it up. Now pump the bulb and it should start to firm up. Now fire a generous amount of easy start into the right hand side of the air cleaner and quickly stuff a rag into the hole to seal it up ( the pipe should have already been removed in order to see the fuel filter) Start the engine and keep going, she will fire and then keep her at @ 2000 rpm until the roughness smooths out. What you have done is bring the high pressure pump in to play. And air in the system will be expelled as fuel is used. Keep her ticking over for at least 20 minutes. As a secondary note if you have changed the injector seals, after a SHORT test drive retighten the injectors you will find they might well seem loose this is because the cylinder pressure has re seated them.

    Thank you thank you ......and thank you man. I've had the same problem as you and i've been trying to make it work for 15 days now. I'd watched tons of tutos and tried hundreds of ways to clear the air but the engin still didn't start. Your comment showed me the way i've been looking for all this time. The engin started at first attempt. Thank you again and wish you the best.

    My heroes! I accidentally introduced air into the fuel system while changing the air filter. The car would crank, but not start. I bleeded the fuel system as shown in this video and the engine started again. Just in time, the battery was so drained, this was likely by last shot. Oh! That awesome angel noise of a starting HDI. Thanks folks! Here is a virtual beer from me. 🍻

    Any chance of a demo on coolant replacement and flush? I can't find a typical thermostat housing anywhere, and I'm unsure about the process of flushing and bleeding off air. It seems that noone has done a coolant change for the C4 1.6HDi - mine's 2008.

    Thanks for watching our videos. We're sorry to hear your having issues with your car :( Which way are you parking your car and for how long? (i.e. front facing uphill and over night?). When you turn the ignition, do you know if the lift pump/in tank pump is priming? You may be able to hear a buzzing under the rear seat, especially if you lift the rear seat base. Have you been able to check any of the fuel lines for leaks? Does the issue occur when the car is on the flat? Please let us know how you get on :)

    I think the problem was a loose jubilee clip on the primer. I usually have it parked nose-uphill so the diesel flows to the back, and the air gets in the primer. I've tightened it but haven't had a chance to prime it properly and test it out yet, or listen to the lift-pump... as I'm halfway through doing the timing belt at the moment and I have locking pins everywhere. I bought the car cheap, as a fixer-upper, and to learn. Looks like I'll be getting a lot of learning done! :-)

  • @DrivewayDudes

    Yeah the loose jubilee clip on the primer could explain the issue alright. I remember when Will did the timing belt and water pump on his C4 (no video sorry) and it took him all day so good luck ;) It's always great to hear when people are hands on, learn as they go and try things for themselves. If you ever need any advice, always feel free to ask Driveway Dudes through KZread or on Social Media :)

    Hi, I've got a 2009 Nemo with a 1.4 HDI, recently changed the diesel filter, forgot to prime it at first, then primed it later on. Though now I get that sometimes the MIL goes on and the engine goes into limp until I restart, last time I did OBD was for the MOT said it was something with the air and fuel, though it doesn't happen always. When I prime it again, I do see some air going through the lines.

  • @DrivewayDudes

    @DrivewayDudes

    Yes, priming is most important after the filter replacement and before attempting to start the engine. On a previous filter bleed/change we did not prime it for long enough. The car fired up and ran for perhaps 30 seconds then cut out. We learned the lesson the hard way.

Used to have it every Monday, but I've been having it every other day now, but I do see air in the visible libes.. Though I don't recall if the Memo 1.4 hdi's have a screw ontop of the filters to empty the filter like in your video.

    Hi, Im having trouble with starting my Xsara. It starts then after 20 seconds stops then will turn over but no fire. I have since learnt that the fuel is running back into the tank from the engine and to get it started I have to pump the primer at the top of the engine to draw the fuel back - then it starts. These incidents do not happen all the time, why is this happening ? Any ideas please welcome. Many thanks

    Does the primer actually remove air from the system? I’ve noticed after changing my fuel filter (Peugeot 207) it turns over a few times before actually firing up. I’m wondering if there are a few air bubbles left in the system.

  • @DrivewayDudes

    @DrivewayDudes

    When you change the fuel filter you will get a small amount of air in the system. By repeatedly compressing the rubber bulb it pushes through air and diesel so when you fire up there will be no air that may cause the engine to stall

    Your engine would be the same so ideally there should be a rubber pipe/tube attached to the filter housing. If yours does not then it may have fallen off. If when you tighten the bleed screw down and no more fuel flows out then you can consider the bleeding job done and on to priming for several minutes before attempting to start the engine

    Hi MrPaddywack2001, You have to turn it quite a bit. Fuel will flow and any water that may be inside will also flow out. When you are happy with it then tighten it up and proceed to prime. Do not try to start the engine until you have primed it for several minutes or you may get an airlock.

    We wouldn't recommended using green diesel unless you're using it on the farm. Being classed as agricultural diesel it may not have the same additives and is illegal for use on Irish roads in cars, vans and trucks, etc. If stopped and your fuel tank is dipped/checked and found to have this fuel then you may face a heavy fine and/or have you vehicle seized/impounded.
