Bleaching Shirts for HTV, Sublimation, and more!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Bleaching shirts is an easy way to add some interest to your projects. I love this technique for HTV and even sublimation. As a bonus, I am sharing how I use bleaching with adhesive vinyl as well. Then you can choose which bleached shirt methods work for you and make your own to wear or to sell. Be sure to follow my instructions for shirt types for the best results then break out your Cricut or sublimation printer and get started on your own version of these shirts!

    I made quite a few “acid wash” shirts back in Nov. I used 100% cotton Gildan shirts. I did not know about the peroxide trick. About 1/2 of the shirts started developing bleach holes after 5-10 washes. I found the heather style didn’t bleach as easily, and I did have a purple that would not lighten and ended in a whole lot of holes! I also had an orange that did not go light enough to see the design well enough.

    This is the BEST bleach/sublimation video I have seen! All the other ones I watched said to absolutely DONT use the low or no splash bleach, at the time that is all I had so I used it anyway and loved how I could control it. I bought some regular bleach, still like the low splash better but do use the regular for some applications.

    Just noticed you were using the peroxide in the clear bottles. It’s been a while but I remember seeing something somewhere talking about why peroxide is stored in a brown bottle. Hydrogen peroxide is highly reactive that can react with light or heat to produce water. To prevent it's reaction with light and heat to make water it is stored in coloured bottles so that light doesn't pass through it. You may already know this but I thought I’d share 😊 👍🏽 Thank you for the video! Love your tests, very appreciated!

    Great video! What percentage of polyester shirts can you either use a sublimation printer or ink transfer sheets on? I had thought it had to be 75% polyester or higher, but I noticed you used 65%. It's a game changer if lower percentages can be used!

  • @RandomRandisRamblings

    65 poly/35 cotton is ideal for bleaching. 50/50 will still bleach, but you have to use diluted bleach (higher cotton count leads to very thin fabric and holes) and it likely won't flash to white where bleach is applied. Higher poly counts (especially 100% poly) are great for sublimation, but won't bleach since it's actually the COTTON fibers that bleach, not the polyester.

  • @AngieHolden

    Angie, I love your video. I tried today at 71degrees outside, but it was part sun & clouds rolled in as I was spraying. I sprayed on splash-less straight bleach. I had combo of shirts cuz keep hearing diff things. I used 5 shirts - 100% cotton, 50/30plus mix, 60/40. Colors were teal, Heather burgundy, Heather purple, mauve & hot pink. I had them out there for an hr & it didn't start to do anything. I did lose most of my sun & some wind caused temp to drop a bit. I tried a hair dryer & that didn't help. I brought in cuz rain came. I rinsed in peroxide & put them in the washer. I guess I will try again on a defintely sun warm day. What am I doing wrong?

    Rewatching, my thought process is sort of vintage...you bleached your shirt and maybe too large a spot, could/would you consider doing a bit of over dying for a different look before adding your vinyl or sublimation design? What do you think of my thought, Angie?

  • @AngieHolden

    @AngieHolden

    Yes you definitely could! Just bleach then use tie dye to add other colors.

    Nice design! I love your content. I have one question how did you get your HTV design so big using cricut design space? I thought you could only design within a roughly 9 by 6 space? I looked through your videos I didn’t see a topic on this,maybe I missed it? If you can send the link or shed light on this please can you let me know, I’m about to take my Cricut back because I a need a larger design field. Thanks in advance and thanks for the wonderful content.

    The 6.75 x 9.25 inch restriction is only for print then cut. For any cut design, your maximum is 11.5 x 23.5.

    I have two questions, the bucket of half water half peroxide, can you use the same for all the shirts you are stopping bleaching on? or do you have to dump and have new for each shirt to stop bleach process. Second, the spray bottle you have on hand for scorching.. that 100% peroxide? or the half and half again?? Thank you for the tutorial!! Excited to try this out!

    Yes use the same bucket for all. And the spray bottle was 100% peroxide.

    I tried bleaching a navy shirt I got from Wal-mart for a sublimation design. It was 65% polyester and 35% cotton (GEORGE brand) but it would never turn white. It turned a light grey then I sprayed peroxide on it then washed it. It came out even darker in the bleaching area after washing and drying. What did I do wrong? Does bleaching does best with heather colors?

    Hi, I bleached my first shirt and it looked alright outside not great left it in the sun for 1 hour, but once I washed it the bleaching looks almost invisible if you turn the shirt inside out you can see the bleach on the inside more then the outside. I used cardboard in between the shirt. can you tell me why?

    I bleached a 50/50 hot pink sweatshirt and after I washed it in cold water with little detergent the bleach spots weren’t white any more, it was almost like some of the pink ran to the bleached spots and turned them a pinky color instead of it staying white. I did not do the peroxide and water solution to stop the bleaching process. Any tips or advice on why it did that? Thanks!

    Hey Angie! Whenever I sublimate on a bleached shirt the colors come out darker and not bright, any ideas why this is? I also get pretty bad scorch marks which I know I can fix with peroxide but I haven’t been able to figure out how to get a nice bright print onto a bleached shirt

  • @AngieHolden

    @AngieHolden

    Maybe the polyester content? Generally shirts that bleach have less polyester which will lead to a print that is not as bright.

    Do you do anything before bleaching after sublimating, do you wash between processes? IE Sub -> Wash -> Bleach -> Wash? Also, what Bottles do you use? I find it impossible tto find a good spray bottle that does a fine vertical mist or even a steady stream. The vertical (straight down) aspect is the most difficult.

    When you sublimated and then bleached, you washed the shirts after. The shirts you sublimated after bleaching had not been washed yet had not been washed after sublimating. Did you notice any fading on those after washing? I'd much rather have the crisp look but if they are going to fade a little either way, the bleaching after subbing seems so much easier.

  • @AngieHolden

    @AngieHolden

    Sublimation would not fade on a 100% polyester shirt but since these have some cotton it can fade some. I didn't notice anything in particular with these but I didn't have a sample to compare them to either.
