I know these moths can look edgy and dangerous but they're docile and pollinators. If you ever see one, be kind to them they just need a place to rest during the day.

Totally agree. Just some people tend to destroy than to understand. If one appears in my place, I try to make peace with whomever is ill in the home. I don't freak out and try to kill it.

It makes me upset to know how people associate them with death just because of their name. They should not be called that. It's so sad. It's a harmless insect that has been lied about and that's the reason why people hate it. There's another very cute fuzzy moth named the tropical swallow-tailed moth, which has big cute eyes and is simply adorable. But people have lied about this adorable creature and say that if you see it means that you will die, which is not even true. They say that if you see and you have to kill it to prevent dying, when the whole time they can't even spread disease! The hate for moths is so unfair. They are too underrated.

Bro, this moth is not a sign of anything bad. They are really common here in brazil and I personally love them. I'd say I see one at least once in every two months and they never killed me lol. It's like people saying black cats bring bad luck. Bad things happen all the time.

I agree. It's a shame that people make up lies about things just to make others scared of something that's harmless. People hating on them is unfair.

Congratulatulations on finding such a beautiful specimen! I'm currently a graduating student from an university in Brazil, i find this species specifically so interesting and misunderstood here, i'm gonna have the discipline of Entomology next semester and i'm seriously considering focusing on lepidopterans. I love moths.

The color isn’t a death moth. I saw one in Hawaii in 2013 at my best friends wedding. My dad passed in 2014. I even have really good pictures of that moth. It’s quite beautiful.

I’m a Hawaii resident and it’s early morning. Less than 2 hours ago I found a black moth similar to that had come into my house. I was able to chase it outside with a mop. Now a true story: Mom used to clean houses and one day a large moth flew onto the balcony of an apartment on the 31st floor and stayed there for a week. A month or so later the apartment owner’s mother died. So you can see why I hate those things.

@@Broekschijter just because it's black that doesn't mean it's bad. There's a swallowtail called a great Mormon, and it is all black. Kind of similar to this moth in color but with tails. I also live in Medellin, and I just found one these guys on my couch after I got out of the bathroom. I think it was attracted to the warmth my body was producing, because it was perched right where I sit. I have no clue how it got into my apartment, as big as it is! At first I thought it was a bat and was pretty freaked out... it was bigger than the one in your video though, I'd say about 7" across! Fortunately, I managed to get him in an Exito bag without hurting him, and got him back outside.

@@rhaib It's clothes moths that eat clothes not all moth species. Butterflies evolved from moths and there are moths out during the day around flowers too. Moths can also be so colorful and diurnal people think they are butterflies. Day flying moths. People think this moth is scary just because its black I wonder if they would think a male black mormon.

This moth is not a sign of anything. It doesn't mean you will die, simply it's a big black moth. Moths don't have powers to do anything bad to you. I agree that it is nonsense that people say those things about them. I heard something online saying that if a black beetle flies into your house it might mean you're sick or something if I'm remembering it correctly. It wouldn't make any sense to start thinking that you're sick or something's wrong with you just because a black beetle flies into your house. It's just trying to get people to think negative about their sounds really. 🤦

Agreed. One flew into my house and was trapped in my sister's windowsill, trying to avoid my cats. And in spite of how scared I was and its supposed superstitious rep; I got a paper towel, was able to get the moth on it, and set it free...took off as soon as it was outside. Now, I'm still afraid, but I'm more happy that I was able to save it from getting eaten by my cats...does that sound weird and crazy?
