Is there not some debate as to whether this moth or Atticus atlas is the largest moth by wingspan? I’ve seen incredibly large specimens of both species. Though I say that, I have a special affection for the ‘witch moths’ and their intricate camouflage patterns. When I was 7 years old, I found a Black Witch moth on a tree in a cemetery across the street from my walk-up. I’ve also found some gorgeous Polyphemus moths in North Carolina and Pennsylvania, USA. I was under the impression that life cycles of most Lepidoptera were the same, allowing for variation between food sources, favoured locations for oviposition and pupation, etc.? I guess what I am asking is, we know their life cycle, more or less; is it their larval food sources we don’t know? LOVE your channel, mate. Rock on; I love all Lepidoptera, but I’m mad for moths. That is a gorgeous specimen.

I'm pretty confident T. agrippina can outsize A. atlas in length, but to be honest, its kind of a pointless debate, the difference is not that great

@@BartCoppens I agree. That’s what I meant when I said we’ll probably continue finding specimens of each that one-up each other in wingspan up to almost 35cm. I WILL bet nearly anything that Atticus atlas is-on average-more massive, though, between their greater wing area and that chunky Saturniid body!

yea but no, because there are different ways to measure wingspan. Argema mittrei has the largest wingspan in length, the white which moth has the largest wingspan in width, and the females of Coscinocera hercules have the largest wingspan in surface area. I think atlas is just a general combination. either way all of them are large.
