Black Spots on My Orchid Leaf: Should I be Worried?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Black spots on orchid leaves could mean one of three things:
(1) the orchid was bruised during transport or handling,
(2) the leaves have had access to more sunlight then they require, or
(3) bacteria has infected the leaf.
Since the first two reasons are fairly easy to resolve and there’s no need to panic, this video will focus on the bacterial infection. But as a guide, brown spots can occur during rough handling, and the leaves bruised. They will recover in a month’s time. As for sunlight, move the orchid away from direct sun.
Black spots on orchid leaves are a direct result of a bacterial infection caused by Acidovorax (syn. Pseudomonas), known as Bacterial Brown Spot. The spots start off as brown smudges, minuscule in size and appear waterlogged. When pressed, the leaf will ooze sappy liquid. This initial stage could be mistaken with overwatering, since the leaves can’t eliminate the excess water faster than the roots can absorb it. Water will cause blisters on the leaf, which eventually turn brownish-black.
Contrary to overwatering, with Bacterial Brown Spot, the infection will appear a nasty green color, slowly fading to yellow circle-like halo around the spot, then black.Black is the final stage, when the blister sinks down into the leaf, leaving an “open pond”, or whole.

I purchased this plant already infected. It was on sale and thought it was just cold burn. Luckily, I kept it away from other orchids! When I realized it was an infection, I threw out leaves & flowers. I'm trying to start new plants with flower spikes. Also, since lots of the roots were good, I'm trying to grow new leaves from the base of the stem by the roots. I just ordered your Orchid record book so I can keep records of my experiences. I am new at all this so I have lots to learn! (I don't know how to attach photos.)

Hi Amanda, Thank you for useful info. I had a case with on of my orchids. I bought a new phalaenopsis. I was so happy that I have a plant with 5 flower spikes. I was so excited about it. I left it a side and kept it in the plastic wrap to avoid any temp shock. After 3 days, I noticed a black spot on one of the leave. When I removed the plastic, I found one pod trapped between 2 leaves. Bacteria start to grow on both of them. I use H2O2 to treat it but for some reason it did not work for me. Finally, I had to cut the infected part and used cinnamon.

Hi Abdulhalim, 5 spikes? That's amazing! I have found that Hydrogen Peroxidw doesn't do everything that people say it does. It's good to clean the leaves, but not much else. It doesn't kill or halt bacteria so cinnamon is the best thing next to a bactericide for plants. Just don't get cinnamon on the roots. If it spreads too much, it's best to cut the leaf off.

Hi Joseph Rapp, Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment. Unfortunately, I don't have a video or an article on zygos. They are a tricky orchid to grow. I'll look into ans see what I can find and research if they are any different. Sometimes one genus of orchid attracts specific bacteria. Other times, it's natural and it's nothing to be worried about. *fingers crossed that it's the later.

I tied my orchid to the avocado tree I have, last year. It was dying inside so I gave it the black tea treatment, which helped the roots come back to being green. I tied it to the trunk but I think it was too tied. I did see some growth of new leaves on that sick orchid but that was it. The baby one I bought hasn't done anything but it's still alive. Now recently I've seen bite marks on the leaf from the previously sick orchid. I've pretty much left nature take care of it cause I pretty much gave up. I live in Florida and it's hot, but rains every day during this summer. I've tried to growing plants but everything dies on me, so I think the orchids I have have a slight better chance of survival outside.

I don't have a video about how to tie orchids to trees (not yet anyways) but I did write an article about it. You can read it here: orchideria.com/orchids-on-trees/ The Florida humidity will do wonders for your orchid.

The next day i noticed huge black spots on several of the leaves of multiple orchid plants. My plants live outside (southwest Florida). I'm not sure if the neem oil + new sunshine burned the leaves (a massive tree was cut down so my back yard is now much more sunny than it was a week ago,) or if they're suffering from something else. Do I cut these leaves off or just keep them in a shady area?

  • @Orchideria

    @Orchideria

    3 жыл бұрын

Hi Carole, yes, exactly! Sometimes the damage done by the hydrogen peroxide is so small and you can have benefits as when it breaks down into 2 OH. The benefits of killing the bacteria outweighs the damage you'll do by using it. Also the bacterial brown spot is aggressive, so you have to do something fast, if not the orchid dies.

Hi Ina, I honestly don't know. I've never seen black spots on the underside of the leaf. In any case, I would treat it with a bactericide and see what happens. Physan 20 won't hurt rhe orchid, and if it isn't bacteria, then no harm is done to the orchid.

Hi Lee, I usually use a balanced fertilizer 3 weeks out of the 4. I adjust those doses on 3 occasions: when the orchid is in bloom, when the orchid grows new roots, and when the orchid grows new pseudobulbs. If I have other specific problems, then I use epsom salt or cal-mag. Sometimes I use epsom salt periodically 1 every 3 months to keep routine. If you mix too many products at once it can hurt the orchid because those products react with themselves. So whatever fertilization schedule you follow, be sure to only use one product at a time.

Put beach pebbles in window box with pots hide pots for 3 orchids and 3 vern. no holes. Then put potted plants in with holes in pots. So take them out to water/ maintenance. Put live moss on top pebbles hide pots ect. Spray mist when needed for moss and vern. This is my take what see on KZread but I believe my way is for long term growing with all plants growing together. Which I think be long term sustainable hopefully all plants in good health. Perhaps be idear to do video if like idear.

  • @Orchideria

Hi Lee, when I do a plant setup like you described, I still have to leave them in separate pots. This is because the orchids will fight for nutrients between themselves. The biggest, oldest orchid will take over the pot, depriving the newer, younger orchid's roots. By leaving them in their separate pots they grow easier without "competing" with other. They are also easier to treat when it comes to pesticides. I think the idea you want is like an open terrarium, but those don't last long term, as in over 10 years. It will work and is beautiful, but you have really know each orchid well to do this. I wish you the best and I know its going to look great!

Hi Malaspina, You can try 2 things, but I haven't tried them personally, so this is based on theory and not practice. I read that you can use 2% solution of Sodium Hydrochloride (bleach) if you dilute it well. The other option would be to use Corsodyl (chlorhexidine gluconate) antiseptic mouthwash or Listerine. I know that's not a very common answer, but it doesn't hurt the orchid and it kills the bacteria. I've had more than one person recommend this, so I guess it works.
