How to save Orchids with Black Rot

Black rot is a disease that can kill off an entire orchid in a matter of days, for this reason it needs to be taken seriously. Here is an article to find out more about it www.aos.org/Default.aspx?id=119 and also here www.plantmanagementnetwork.org...
I actually had the chance to deal with black rot, my friend had this disease on her orchid, so here is what we did:
1. Separate and isolate infected orchids, they need to be far away from healthy ones.
2. Purchase hydrogen peroxide 3%, you can find this typically at human pharmacies. If you prefer to use fungicides, you can use them per label instructions.
3. sterilize your cutting tools with alcohol, bleach, or by flaming them.
4. Unpot the orchid, throw away all the old media and, if you want to use the same pot, wash it and disinfect it very well with bleach.
5. Cut all blackened portions of the plant, leaves, pseudobulbs, everything that is infected.
6. Soak the orchid in hydrogen peroxide using a spray bottle or by submerging the plant into a container and let it fizz for a few minutes.
7. dry the orchid very well, all leaves and crevasses need to be kept dry from now on to prevent other infections.
8. Pot the orchid how you like best, keeping in mind the orchid's requirements.
9. Care for the orchid normally, but always keep the leaves and pseudobulbs dry. Keep the growing area well ventilated. You can use cinnamon powder to seal off the cut wounds. Use cinnamon powder as it is, dry, don't mix it with water or other liquids or you'll take away from its potency and effect.
Good luck and I hope this will help you!

i truly appreciate you. i found your channel a two days ago and have watched possibly 30 or more of your videos already. i am an avid plant grower, but now moving into orchids more seriously. and well, thanks to you i may save my favorite orchid that i stupidly exposed to several newly purchased orchids from a chain garden store and gave it root rot and maybe more. and i know to quarantine plants, i am quite grumpy with myself. you also you have helped me learn a lottttt about orchids. and btw anyone who complains about your advice or some method you suggest that do not work for them that worked for you... well they need to hush. there are many youtubers spreading very poor advice on growing plants on here and you are certainly not one of them. i was raised on a nursery, have taken many classes on horticulture and even worked at parks specializing in subtropical and tropical trees and fruits and you address your orchids like a professional with an abundance of love in your heart for your plants. the people who complain just dont understand any plants, as even if you have two species of identical plants one may not react ok to the precise conditions as the other. every plant is an individual just as everything is. and while there are basic needs and do's/dont's- every great horticulturist or just lover of plants knows it's a journey. and at the end of the day we will all lose plants we love, whether it be from us making a dumb mistake- as i just did by not quarantining the new orchids i got- or for no reason other than you are working with mother nature. growing up on the nursery my father always said that in order to grow a new type of plant and truly know its loves and dislikes i may very well kill 10 of them before. all green thumbs will be black thumbs if they are dealing with a plant they have not shed any 'light' on. and that is what learning is about. i think your youtube channel may be my favorite ever. and i love your humility and passion. additionally your practices and explanations are comprehensive, fun, engaging detailed. i was friends with the owner of the largest orchid producer in the world growing up and he would have loved you - i used to love digging through his trash orchids lol. i miss those days. anyways, thanks beauty. ps please pardon my lack of caps, a shift key and a few other keys on my keyboard... when i was not looking my kitties realized their favorite forbidden 'bed' was available for naps... i think they may even have fought over it as somehow they even ripped off a key lol. anywho, keep being you love! i don't really use discord much but i wish you had one so we could share photos of our success' thanks to your advice! wish me luck on the root rot!

This has been so informative! I have isolated two Catts, cut the black rot away, put cinnamon on cuts and drenched them in Physan 20. I have been advised by an orchid grower to use Pyton 27, so will use that when it arrives. Thank you for your encouragement. I'd hate to lose these orchids or any others that may have come in contact with the infected ones.

Thank you so much Danny for all the honest and informative videos you have made for your viewers. I have been keeping orchids for a little over a year and just got 3 new Cattleyas at an orchid show two weeks ago. Sadly, they soon started showing signs of black rot and despite quick treatment with H2O2 and cinnamon, two of them have already been lost. Today, the last of the three had her second 'surgery' and I am left with the two newest growths and one very sad root, (on a yellow spotted Cat a lot like you've shown in this video. I desperately want to save her.) There is only one weak root that I am not even sure is capable of hydrating the orchid. I am nervous about potting her and do not know what is the best route to take. Should I pot in LECA, my standard Cattleya media, or should I use a more moisture retentive media to maintain a little extra hydration in the pot in order to encourage new roots? Usually, if a Cattleya is strong enough, she goes into LECA but if I receive a very tiny seedling or a rootless Cat, they usually spend some time in sphagnum moss until they have roots strong enough to handle the transition to LECA. This orchid, in the state she is in, would usually go in sphagnum for a while, but I fear the moisture retaining media is not good with the risk of black rot still a big concern. I cannot find examples of how to care for a sympodial orchid which has been treated for black rot, leaving the plant pretty much rootless. What to do? I would very much appreciate your advice.

Boy was I happy to find this clip. thank you so much Maria. I have about 20 Orchids and bought a new one that I had not got . Just after a few days I found that they were showing signs of huge black spots over the leaves, I was devastated as I've had these years and all other advice I found was to throw them ALL away! I then found Maria's clip and followed her treatment to the letter, it took some work but was well worth it, I should point out 3% hydrogen peroxide is not easy to source in UK as they usually stock 5% but I ordered it from my local chemist. I am very pleased to say all my orchids survived and no more black spot, so thank you Maria, orchid saver 😘👏🤗

Hi The one leaf on my orchid (the part at the base ) had turned a yellow black and on its underside was a black spot so thinking it to be black rot I cut it off and some part of the base was also infected so I cut that off as well , in total I had to cut off 4 leaves :(( I also put cinnamon on the wound which is the part where the new leaves usually grow since I had cut there. Will a keiki grow from this orchid now or is it as bad as dead :(( ?? Thank you !!

The orchid is essentially trying to shut off circulation to infected cells, so the disease can't spread. But the disease is always 1 step away from the shutoff, so the orchid keeps killing itself in vain, and the fungus loves the rotted defenseless cells that the healthy plant has rejected.

Another biologist tip, for perfect sterilization: Dip the metal implement in ethanol. Take out a lighter, and set the ethanol on fire. It will burn for a second or two, and the result is perfect sterilization. It takes 5 seconds and is as good as autoclaving (baking) the tool for 2 hours.

I’m new to orchids here and from watching your videos I notice that my orchid is a moth orchid in purple with a yellow middle to the flowers. Although she is flowering a lot! Her leaves are waxy and wrinkled and her roots in the pot shrivelled (I’ve only had it a month only just started to investigate it properly) also two roots are black. I fear it may be black rot but it has break to the bottom of one leaf and a part of the stem. I wish I could attach a photo.. what should I do in this case? Should I chop off the black roots and leaves, repot with a new pot and medium and just keep spraying the affected area with hydrogen peroxide 3%? Also in the UK it’s hard to get Hydrogen peroxide 3% can you give me a household cleaner that would also do the same job? Thank you! Your videos are so informative and helpful!

Hello danni, I had a question about an orchid I recently got from a friend. I received it after watching several of your videos so I knew to inspect it. It has a long stem and on the lower part it is bare (which I'm guessing is from old leaves falling off), on this part the stem seems to be shriveled and darkening as well as the base of the lowest leaves seem to be rotting. I'm afraid it might be stem rot but I am hoping it is okay and the lowest leaves are simply drying out. I have already treated it with hp 3% and cut off its flower spikes to promote root growth. Is there any way I can send you pics of it as you are very experienced with orchids and I would greatly appreciate the help. I'm also thinking I might need to cut off the lower part of the stem to stop the spread but I am new to orchids and do not want to do anything I will regret. Pls and thank you!

Hey dani, i have a unique rather dier situation i had two phalis with stem rot unaware what it was or how to treat it (my father spent at least 10 years working with orchids had never seen it before or knew what it was) ive watched quite a few of your videos to now know the phalis are dead (papery roots) but the leaves the fell off at least a week ago (maybe two) are still green and the black hasnt spread. Is it stem rot? I was always careful to not get the crown wet so im not fully convinced it is that. Im also wondering if you know of any way to save the plant through the leaves because they are extremely healthy, i had some old flower stems and are trying to produce keiki but not much has happened yet. Im not expecting them to either as they were severed from the mother plant but i thought i would give it a go none the less. Any information or direction to videos will be greatly appreciated, thankyou. From jess

Great video, Danni. I had four cases of black rot last winter. Two of the orchids were saved, two were not, as the infection went inside the rhizome, and in the end, the bulbs were all black. That made me think: why so many infections at the same time?. Then I remembered, that in my rainwater, I use to have charcoal in the buckets, 3 or 4 large chunks in each bucket. I quickly entered the charcoal in the buckets, and a large net with 1½ kilo inside my rainwater tank. And it worked, I have not had any cases of black rot since then.

+Helle Ascanius Jørgensen is charcoal that efficient in preventing disease? from my aquarium days I used to use it as a media that attracted big particles, like those remains after treating the aquarium for disease. It is also said that it attracts heavy metal particles. The problem with charcoal in aquariums is that it has a limited life, once it gets full it starts to leach out toxins in the water. That is part of the reason why I don't use it in orchid pots. Can you tell me a bit more about using it with orchids please? I tend to be too confused about what articles say, it lacks a lot of details to convince me :P

  • @helleasc

+MissOrchidGirl I heard this from some of the older orchidgrowers in our orchidsociety. They all use charcoal in their rainwater tanks, and it's big chunks of charcoal, like we earlier used for barbeque. Nowadays it's really hard to find, but there's still some vendors selling the good oldfashioned charcoal, and that's what we want. If it's discarded after a couple of years, I'm good. I've never found it to poison the water. I have it in all of my rainwater containers, in bigger containers there's more charcoal. I'm not a chemist, I really don't know exactly, what the charcoal does to the water, but I assumed it to remove or absorb bacteriae causing the fungal diseases like brown and black rot. Maybe it's wrong, maybe it's right, but my orchids are healthy, that's the main reason for me to use it. I can see the results. For three years I've had no case of black rot, except when I forgot about the charcoal. After entering the charcoal - again - the orchids regained their health.

hi again danni. i dont know if you reach out to people often but as of this morning only my old phalinopsis and one of the new dendrobiums showed signs of black rot. upon my inspection now, all 8 of my new giant dendrobiums have them and i believe my all 3 of my original orchids do as well. im so mad at myself for not quaraniting these plants, but i havent encountered many funguses that kill so fast like this in my 20 years of raising other plants. the new dendrobiums have amazing massive healthy root structures, their leaves looked great too save for some tiny black spots here and there upon purchase. and they all have between 6 to even 14 caneswith many canes and are all very tall. one is almost 3 foot tall and most are just a tad shorter. however all of these new plants are so large they could be split up. i didnt want to but to try to save as much as i can im wonderind if this is the best option. i wish i could send you a photo of these new guys as they are truly amazing in size in every aspect. their root systems are just as massive and amazing and hard to fit into even some 4 gallon pots. i got them last week and since i had no way to properly repot them they had got a bit dehydrated. last night i properly hydrated and fertilized all of them individually as one of your videos had shown. i needed some massive pots to submerge their roots in water but i luckily found some at a dollar store properly hydrated and fertilized all. i also spot treated the small black spots as you had shown in another video. it took hours since they are so large and i was trying to avoid cross contamination. when i got them since the roots are also incredibly large and have grown far outside and under each pot, despite them being and still being incredibly healthy roots i broke many bits because there was no way to place them elsewise till i got these temporary massive pots to just hold them in. my question is- since now i know those tiny black spots are this awful black rot and not the simple fungus- should i go ahead and break up the massive dendrobiums carefully and separate them into new plants for treatment to best try to save as many as i can. or will that be too much stress on them after having a week of lacking hydration and some root breakages. or should i just disenfect them as a whole and later break them apart. i'm so sad this is happening. it took me 4 hours to fertilize and lightly spot treat them all yesterday as it seemed the black spots were the other fungus thats not a big deal and not this stupid black rot. i wish my childhood friend that owned the orchid nursery were still around because he is the only person i knew that was knowledgable on orchids. i know i need to act swiftly so i may disinfect as you showed and cut the leaves starting to show large black spots, then do the splitting carefully tomorrow morning and redisenfect again carefully with hydrogen peroxide again at night and repot them all. some are also showing yellow leaves today which i know they have not been overexposed to sun so i believe those leaves will be next to blacken fully. thank you for your time!

Is it always black rot, when there are black parts? My second repotted orchid today had all its root tips in the media black and the bottom leave stems of the crown were also black. But everything was completely dry. I also used some desinfection spray, but only on the black crown, as there were some white powder trapped behind one of the dead leave stems. I once unpurposedly drowned the orchid and kept it very dry from then on. It lost its blooms right away, but is now producing a new leaf. The new media ist seramis orchid mix with bark and I only rinsed it with tap water. I used a bigger pot, so it wont stay that dry any more (normaly I would bath it with filtered rain water, but didn't want to overshoot). The roots are mostly on the upper part, but in a circled layer under the media. Did I do anything wrong or can it stay that way?

+Sabrina mozaique Hi, the black roots might be cause by something else, root tips are a lot more sensitive and they can burn easily or dessicate due to dry air, obtaining a dark appearance. It might not always be the case of rot. But the black portions on pseudobulbs and crowns are indeed rot. It is a bit hard for me to tell now and a picture would help me understand what's going on, so if you want just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)

+MissOrchidGirl Hello Dany, it was indeed stem rot. But the problem now is, that I checked temperature and humidity on my window, where they stand over a heating. It is 21 to 23°C, BUT the humidity is only 25%! :( I have tried it with putting water pots on the heating and clay pots in water underneath the orchids. But now that they have air holes around the pot and with the new media, they seem to be drying out within one day. I can transfer them to another window, where they have 40% humidity, but only 16°C. Or i could put them inside a big plastic pot. But as I had them in the old media with rather tight clay pots and no holes, they got root rot. What do you think?

  • @MissOrchidGirl

    @MissOrchidGirl

    8 жыл бұрын

+Sabrina mozaique well I actually think that if you have Phalaenopsis don't worry about humidity, they couldn't care less really as long as they get moisture from the pot. When you water try soaking them for 10-15 minutes, this will make the media retain some more water. Fresh media will hold very little water in its first month, then things will get a bit better. I personally would just go for less water retention than more, it's easier to control. Try to compensate by soaking and I would keep them in the warm window, 16deg is way too cold. ps: humidity is overrated, don't worry, particularly with Phals and Catts. There are just a few orchids that will show signs of low humidity. Just make sure they are hydrated and all should be ok. also in high humidity the risk of rot is higher without proper ventilation so..

Instead of planting it in media, I've put a wet cloth in a big plasticcup, cut of the bottom from another plasiccup and cut out a big whole in that. I placed it upside down in the cup with the wet cloth and put my very sad looking orchid on the top. Do you think, that the moist from the cloth will help the orchid to make new fresh roots and will it survive like this? Actually, I'm not quit sure if it is Black Rot since we have very dry air, but just to be sure I've spayed the roots and plant with Hydrogen Peroxide. Thanks again for your good videos in a language that even a Dane can understand :D Keep up the good work.

Hi Danni, I just had this problem, But as a newbie I didn't know what it was as it was on a leaf of a cattleya, I Had repotted it when it arrived, And it looked like the seller had dripped neat fertaliser on the leaf, The next day the whole leaf was covered, and fell off, When I took it out of the pot to have another look, 2 bulbs where black, so I removed them and soaked the other 2 in neat peroxide, But It looks like I was too late to save this plant as they too are going black from the base up, This will be my first fatality , The seller is not interested and won't reply to any massages, Now I'm hoping that the ones that I bought with it and where packed in the same box with it are not infected but only time will tell, :-(

I am really heartbroken, please help me help my orchid.. it means so much to me 😭 I left it at my mother's care for months while I was deployed abroad. It bloomed a lot but when I came home, it had just 3 leaves from 9!! The pot was at the stairs outside our apartment. Yesterday I noticed a leaf had gone yellow and it fell. I noticed a dark spot on the stem (smelly too)😭 I immediately took the orchid off the pot. The root system is limited, maybe almost inexistent and sick but the orchid was trying to grow new roots. The bark medium has disintigrated, turned into soil mostly and extremely humid as though it was just watered. Allegedly according to my mom it hasnt been watered since beginning of August but I wouldnt bet on that. -.- I left it outside the medium but on top of it since I was too exhausted to deal with it.. Ive been sick for a week and this sight nearly broke me down in tears.. Theres an amazing story behind this orchid, do you think its dead?

Now what happens if the black rot is at the base of my orchid? The leaves are healthy, but the base where the roots are- are infected, does that mean my orchids are not salvageable? What can I do?

MissOrchidGirl unfortunately, my orchids are small and kinda like "infant size." I got them from a florist from a hotel who said I can keep them since they were going to be thrown away, so, I only have the leafs and cane. I can send you a picture if you like, or would that be too much? lol

+Sheena Johnson well you might get the spores from other plants or medias.. if they have a proper environment to develop they will develop.

Hi :) I just found out that in my garden there are lots of wild orchids. However they almost never bloom, so I want to put them in a pot to take a good care of them. However i don't know if the root system is healthy or not, i don't even know what type or orchid they are. Some of them have transparent roots I have no idea what that means? Could you help me please? I don't know if they are worthy to pot or if they are infected with something and I should just throw them away. Help please I'm super new at this I don't know anything. Great Videos btw thank you !

can black rot happen on the stem? I know if my Phals (three of nine) had stem rot or black rot. It happened like lightning; they were all in bloom and looking great. I don't know what happened but it went like wildfire; stems turned black and leaf by leaf dropped off. I did the 'rehab/rescue' method, but it didn't help. I'd like to prevent this in the future, so...how do you tell the difference between Black Rot or Stem Rot?

Excellent video on the antiseptic and disinfectant use of hydrogen peroxide. It is effective because of its oxidative properties like that of chlorine bleach. Hydrogen peroxide is unstable, breaking down/decomposing quickly upon exposure to light. That is why it must be keep in an opaque container. It also breaks down more rapidly with warmer temperatures. Unlike chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide leaves no residue since it decomposes into water and gaseous oxygen. As a result, hydrogen peroxide is an excellent and relatively safe chemical to use as an antiseptic on orchids . Chlorine bleach is relatively harsher and tends to be better suited as a disinfectant. Because of the residue, spraying with chlorine bleach on orchids might create problems for people with asthma.

+DrinkingStar yes very true, there is a chance of intoxication with bleach if inhaling the vapor when you spray, this will not happen with HP :) I think HP is the best thing I discovered ever since I started orchid growing ;)

This video is going to save many plants, believe me!! :) I really have to get the hydrogen peroxide. I don't like to use fungi/pesticide on the plants as long as they are inside the small greenhouse. I had terrible experience with the black rot on cattleyas, it can be really a plague. I lost a many plants, it was coming out everywhere... at some point I was thinking to give up on them. Fortunately I didn't :) Just a note, not all the fungicides products works on the rot problems, it's important to check on which kind of fungi they are active. Otherwise they are useless!

+Orchidaholic oh yes I guess you are right, I never used fungicides but it does seem that some are aimed at particular fungal infections. That is why it's good to read the label :) fortunately HP doesn't care what type of fungi you have, it will destroy it anyway muahahaha :P
