Black Sabbath : Sabotage Album CD Remaster and Super Deluxe Box Set Review and a RANT

This video was originally going to simply review the Sabotage Super Deluxe Edition Box Set but then I thought it would be good to look back at the original vinyl album and then the CD Remasters from 1996 and 2009.
In the video, I show you the booklets and the inside of the box set and give an overview of the album itself. I also recommend which version I feel is the best. My answer may surprise some of you.
I also give an honest opinion of what I think of the box set which is really a lost opportunity.

Hi great review. I was really going to take a hard pass on this set basically because the sound quality on my original Canadian Warner bros press and UK original Nems press are really fantastic. I also have two vinyl bootlegs of the very same live show which sound really great. As for the 7" single I have one that came with the BMG boxset Supersonic years. So I was really gonna pass this one by. I ended up with the cd version first and I was actually quite surprised by the sound of the remastering. But honestly I was more happy to have the tour program and book. Then I got the Vinyl copy of the boxset. I couldn't believe the difference in the quality of the over all packaging. The album sleeves to the booklets and and tour program and man they did a terrific replica of the 7" single. I was pleasantly surprised by the vinyl copy. So if anyone is reading these comments and maybe considering this boxset, the vinyl version is far superior to the cd version

Great review and attention to detail Phil. I always favour the sound of VOL 4 on my vinyl from the seventies. Compression being the curse of some CD reproductions. They just don’t capture what Sabbath were about at that time. The thick , heavy primordial mix that comes through on Sabbath vinyl.

IT's one of the greatest ALBUM COVERS I have ever seen. But people who who didn't grow up with Sabbath don't "get it". The cover is so Sabbath it's just perfect. And you are absolutely correct with the original UK LP press on N.E.M.S. just crushes those CD's you have shown, I own all three of the CD's versions you discussed and I own the original UK LP press and first U.S. Warner Brothers Lp press. Either of the NEMS (my favorite) or WB press on LP is the only way to really hear the power and detail on Sabotage......which is just astounding. Great Review Phil! Keep it up and I hope the Technical Ecstasy Box Set comes thru for us!

Thank you again for watching - Phil :)

Im a bit late to the party, but as always I appreciate the brutal honesty Phil. Looks like I'm gonna have to track down the 1990s one, as I only have the 2009/2014 one. Hopefully I can track down a good pressing here in Canada for a decent price. Doubt I'm gonna find a NEMS pressing here, and I'm not sure how our Canadian pressings compare. Also going to have to find bootlegs of their live performances, as im not gonna pay $100 for these sets when my main reason for buying is the live performance. Like you, I adore this album. Its JUST behind Master of Reality as my favourite, and Vol 4 is just behind Sabotage. I really want to hear this album as it was intended. The thought of Symptom of the Universe being even more brutal than the version I've been listening to since high school? Its enough to make me drool!

I also prefer cd's for my music medium. I'm old enough to remember going from Mono to Stereo vinyl and was blown away by the effect ! While I still have 50-60 original's from that period, their cd counterparts blow most if not all away. @@NowSpinningMagazine The pleasure has been all mine. Watching the Thin Lizzy review now. I appreciate the sincerity, as a fan. There is so much sensationalism and hype out there. I should clarify that the Rhino releases I mention are from 2014. The exist as separate discs but were also compiled in 'The Complete Studio Recordings 1970 -1978" & "The Rules Of Hell" box for the albums Sabbath did with Ronnie. As a mastering engineer, myself...I find that I'm sensitive to almost what could be explained as geographical biases in mastering. Some might argue this idea but that's alright. The many and various UK releases have a more unified sound between them whereas the USA based DigiPrep masters standout...they might have been remastered digitally? Likely. They are clearer with a more defined bottom end. Sharper treble. The UK versions are fatter and warmer but more with a more diffuse presentation. However, the 2021 remasters are as good or better that anything before attempted. I simply have to buy them all!

I can remember staring at it and thinking how brilliant and artistic it was/is. Hi Phil, I became very wary of new editions after the travesty of the Genesis remixes (some, not all) so when it came to Sabotage I went down the Steve Hoffman rabbit hole and came up trumps with the Castle '96 CD and I've since bought the 2015 Sanctuary/Vertigo/BMG reissue (not remastered) on vinyl, so hopefully that's on a par with the NEMS (a little too pricey on Discogs). Yours is the first channel I've found that goes into different versions, and that's a great service to the music, the fans, and hopefully the bands! I only got into Sabbath 3 years ago having decided to go back and check out all the bands I missed during the 70s, and what a find! Iommi's handbrake turns, like on Megalomania, take my breath away - discovering new 'old' music is proving to be a real adventure. Cheers, Ian

Good stuff Phil. I bought this on cassette when it originally came out. Loved the album and played it a lot until it met its demise being chewed up in a friends car stereo. To my shame I did not get round to replacing it until about ten years ago with the 2009 remaster. Part of a '2 for £10' offer on CDs at my local HMV. I never thought the sound was that great on this reissue. Now on a sort of a mission to find a decent copy of the original vinyl based on what you have discovered. If I get lucky I am sure it will cost less than the Deluxe Box Set.

That Japanese single was real, but claiming that this is a four-disc set when Disc 4 is just two songs is very misleading on their part. And I agree, I do not get why people practically get angry about the cover. Is it the reflection they don't like? Maybe they just think they're supposed to hate it because it's on all the bad album cover lists.

Superb and brutally honest overview Phil. This latest box set has clearly made the cardinal mistake of falling short of being an exceptionally desirable package for the Sabbath collector. It's a somewhat lazy effort, overall, that relies on the fact that, as you say, many fans will buy it anyway. But that is no way to treat devotees who, let's face it, are usually getting much better bang for the buck from other artists. They, and the band's legacy, deserve much better than a thinly disguised live concert bootleg regurgitation.

Good reviews! 🙂👍 For my ears, the last 3 or 4 Sabbath albums with Ozzy in the 70's there was some frequency in Ozzy's microphone that was just shrill and deafening to my ears (especially on Sabotage and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath). I got some vinyl to mp3 rips of the 2012 vinyl reissues and those have some of the microphone issues filtered out to where the levels aren't too hot in the mix. To my ears, the 2012 vinyl reissue sounds the best especially for this album! 🤘😎

I still love the first 10 BS LPs, but Sabotage is probably my favourite. I did have the original CD version, which I thought sounded very 'flat' like the majority of early analogue to digital. I think I first heard this album in the mid-nineties and I didn't like it much. (I'm 45) It has grown on me in the last 30 years. I now love this album and I can't understand why I didn't like it at first. I have my first U.K. press and I love it! Do you like the "Never Say Die" album Phil? That was actually my introduction to Black Sabbath as a kid. That album has a special place in my heart. Maybe you could do a show about that album if you like it as much as I do. Many fans don't like this one and I can't figure out why.

Well...the truth is it took me years to like Never Say Die. I saw them on that tour and Van Halen destroyed them, Ozzy was washed up and the band were lost. I bought the Never Say Die single and follow up Hard Road and heard a could of tracks at a friends house in 1978 and just left it. It would be the late 1990s when I actually bought a copy of CD. It is still the only Black Sabbath album I do not have on vinyl. Your comment has made me think I need to rectify that soon! Phil

Hey man, good hearing your thoughts. I agree with the not fairness of the SD packages' prices. I only bought Sabatoge because here in the US I found it for $33 USD. Technical Ecstasy is less, Paranoid and esp. Volume 4 are over $100 - and it's the damn secondary market that did it. There had to have been Ebay sellers who bought these by the case just to double the price. Same thing happened with the Heaven And Hell and Mob Rules Deluxe vinyl, but not the CD's. In defense of the live recordings. You're not acknowledging the bootleg soundboard recording market at all. And the Black Sabbath unofficial release catalog is vast. I've done some research this year (As well as purchased about 40 now) and it seems that Black Sabbath rivals The Grateful Dead for sheer amount of unreleased material. So to think that the "North American Tour" CD's have Had to be released (officially) needs to take this into account... The book does state "taken from various concerts"... Here's what I've come up with, and you can simply listen to what's said between songs as well as check track length. 8.5.75 on Masters Of Reality 4 CD set is actually a remaster of "Black Sabbath - Convention Hall August 5th 1975, Asbury New Jersey." 2 CD set. 15 tracks. Track 6 before Megalomania is "Talking." It matches up with the MOR remaster perfectly otherwise. Funny for me, is I bought a worn out copy of this recently and then realized, it's on the MOR compilation, so I calmed down about it. So I've identified the MOR original source, and will say it isn't the one in the Sabatoge SD pack. I also have "Symptom Of The Universe" AKA "Symptom Of The Paranoid" AKA "Spiral Sabbat live '75 - Baltimore, 8.2.75". I'm not sure of the source. I'd say good quality audience recording. And I have Providence RI 8.3.75. Source is audience, with higher quality recording equipment. Converted from cassette to FLAC w no EQ. This version of Megalomania is exceptional. I'd love to find 8.4.75, if a recording exists. It could be the missing link and prove you right, that it's ever been (even unofficially) released. But out of the 4 versions I have, 8.2, 8.3, 8.5 '75 and also the Deluxe concert, they're all unique. I used Megalomania as a reference because there are so few live recordings of it. And it's also one of my favorite BS songs. I suggest you get on EBay and just type in Black Sabbath CD's. We used to have Bootleg conventions here in the 90's. Double albums for $50, $5 cassette recordings of the albums. CD's were just coming into popularity as well. The unofficial market's really evolved since. You can get a recording of every tour from '70 to '13 pretty easily. My goal is one of each leg of each tour. And attempt to find each song that was ever performed live. If anyone gets really involved in collecting, my advice is ignore titles and make sure you find out the recording date. Happy hunting for the Sabotage '75 tour origins, I'd love to see the 1st edition.

You're welcome Phil, and thanks for the cheerful reply. I didn't want to sound overbearing or anything. But the bootlegs, can't ignore them. I have a 2009 remaster of this album on vinyl. Those original 2009 pressings came with a CD copy. In my opinion that is the best version of Sabotage, I have always found my original vinyl album muddy and lacking clarity (I have decent equipment to play them on). I noticed that some of the tracks on the live album with the box set are also on Past Lives CD2. I have a 70's single of Am I Going Insane (edit) which has Hole in the Sky on the B-side (the end is faded out). I know this as track 'T6' as that was its number in the Duke Box of my local pub back then! Incidentally - I have a box set, The Complete Replicas 70's CD Collection, (Black box with all 8 Ozzy albums) issued in 2001 - these sound like totally different mixes to the 1996 and 2009 re-masters. Any idea Phil?

@@NowSpinningMagazine Thanks for your reply. There's a lot of confusion the 2009 Ozzy era vinyl remasters. They weren't released on vinyl until 2015 (form what I have come to understand). They all came with a CD copy in a floppy plastic CD bag. All stunning remasters on vinyl. Sabotage is mind blowing, and much preferred to my 1975 original. Then they were re-pressed. The re-pressing is shocking, but all have the same catalogue number. for added confusion. I bought Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (this has only side 1 tracks listed on the back), and its bad. Tony's guitar is barely audible. I took it back to HMV for a refund. I spent a long time tracking down the 2015/2009 remastered vinyl with a CD copy. They are all stunning. I couldn't get Vol 4 (my favourite Sabbath album). I bought a copy which was '2009/2015 re-issue, re-master' but a re-press with no CD and gave it away. Awful compared my WWA 1974's pressing. They are still selling the same product (2009 remaster/2015 re-issue but re-pressed with no CD). I have no idea what they now sound like now, SBS has side 2 listed on the back cover now again.
