Tony Iommi's prosthetic fingers are on his fretboard hand. He had the tips of them cut off in a sheet metal cutting machine a day before he turned professional as a guitarist. He was inspired to continue by listening to Django Reinhardt, a gypsy jazz guitarist who had his hands burnt in a fire - and it gave him new hope to play. He made his own fingertips from melted down dishwasher liquid bottles and leather, and used banjo strings and tuned down his guitar to make playing easier.

I met Dio in 1996 when he and his single band just came to Brazil in Sao Paulo for a live performance. I went to backstage because I was working for Guitar Player magazine, He was such a nice person, talking to anyone, not a superstar, he was our Metal hero. His death was like losing a dad. My real dad actually died one month later.

You have no idea how happy it makes me, to see youngsters like yourself listen, and seriously enjoy the classics I grew up on. The Drummer Vinny has a band called Sabbath Nights, and there is a live video of them playing this song with another youngster of 19 yrs, that you would swear, it was Ronnie reincarnated. Same outfit as here, same mannerism's, and the Voice! OMG... that voice!! Best part, is that singer is a little lady named Melody Cristea of Liliac. She performed 7 Dio/Sabbath songs at that show, and all of them are incredible to witness. 🤘

It was the finger tips on Tony Iommi's middle and ring finger of his right hand that were cut off (the hand that he uses on the fret board). After trial and error he was able to create prosthetic finger tips, and by using smaller gauge strings and adjusting his play style to make it all work, he created the heavy sound you hear.

I saw him in a bar that holds maybe 800, he did last in line album and holy diver in its entirety back to back! He's about 5"3" bc im 5"5" and he walked right by me from the bar to the stage n i looked right into his eyes.. he smiled at me (bc i was short too lol) n i could look slightly down at his eyes... im talking he was about 1 foot from me, n hes short.. as i am.. but his voice is the BEST IN ROCK/METAL IVE EVER HEARD......n ive been going to live shows since I was 8, 1st seeing elvis Presley and i bet if you name them ive seen them so ya... he's that GREAT! Sounded just like the album but only he was 4 feet from me. I didnt drink a drop at the show bc i wanted to remember every single moment of his show.. he was EXSTREAMLY special and i knew it. The GREATEST... Ronnie James Dio! Hands down! Only one that comes close was Geoff Tate in the mid n late 80's and rob halford in his prime and.. and yes.. Bruce Dickenson but dio has the best rounded vocals of them all in my personal opinion thou i love all ive noted. Im BACK..EDIT.. i cant leave out TIM RIPPER OWENS hes a beasts BEAST! 🤘👍

Iommi is missing fingertips on his right hand which, since he is left handed, is the one he's making the chords with. Due to this he had to make some interesting choices with the chords he used for Black Sabbath which in turn influenced what became metal music. It was also the last shift he was going to work at the factory before leaving to go on tour with his band and be a full-time musician. Due to a coworker not showing up he was forced to step in to work a big metal flattening machine that he had never worked with before. Instead of giving up he made his own fingertip prosthetics by melting plastic bottles and relearned how to play. And that was in a way the birth of metal

This was a great reaction Maggie, I'm glad you like the late, great Ronnie James Dio. That part you mentioned about the drums getting a gospel swing is a first for me to hear; but when I hear it I understand it. Part of the mystique I hear of Dio aside from the command he had of his voice is the romanticism he puts in his lyrics. I love a red strat as much as anyone else does Maggie.

Gotta consult the true, longtime Sabbath and Dio fans for the best vocal songs. Problem is that with Dio there are just so many. I’d give Children of the Sea the slight edge over Sign of the Southern Cross. Other highly noteworthy songs showcasing Dio’s vocal range are Lonely Is the Word, Over and Over, Too Late and Die Young.

I saw Dio with Heaven and Hell in what would become his final performance on August 29, 2009 at the House of Blues in Atlantic. City NJ. And even though he had been sick and was later diagnosed with Cancer, it was still an awesome show. He showed no signs of being ill. Sadly he passed away the following May 2010. Dio wasn't just a singer, he was a story teller and he took the fans on a magical journey. Saw Dio many times with Black Sabbath, as a solo artist and with Heaven and Hell, every show Dio always looked like he was having the time of his life up on stage. Still miss him.

Tony lost the tips of his fingers by getting his fingers caught in a sheet metal cutter. He fell into depression and I think it was his foreman that showed him an album by Django Reinhardt - a gypsy jazz guitarist who had his hands damaged in a fire. Once he revealed this to Tony, it inspired him to try to find a way to play again. He made his own prosthetics from a dishwashing liquid bottle, melted and sanded down and added leather to help him grip. Tony would also use banjo strings, as they were easier to bend and wouldn't hurt his fretboard hand as much. He would also downtune later to make playing easier and of course, made the sound heavier.

Ozzy is the godfather of metal being the singer of the beginning of Black Sabbath but this might be a unpopular opinion but Heaven and Hell is the best Sabbath album in my world :O

Hi Maggie, really enjoy your content and insight on music. To answer your question about guitarist Tony Iommi's (last name spelled with an I, as in " ion "; 'eye-oh-me') fingers on right/fret hand, he worked in a machine shop. On his last day before quitting to form Black Sabbath, he worked on a sheer, used for cutting metal, kind of like a guillotine. Not familiar with this machine, using it for the first time, he sliced off the tips of two fingers on his right hand. In short, he melted plastic bottle caps, formed them over his finger tips, drop tuned his guitar to make it easier to play, giving a more ominous, sinister sound. This is credited to giving birth/the beginning of heavy metal.

After the accident, he tried to learn to play right handed, fretting the guitar with his left hand. He found it too difficult to make the change, so that's when he came up with the decision to use the melted bottle caps on his fingertips. And the rest is metal history.

Saw Dio w/sabbath in Reno in 81' then solo at the King Dome Seattle new years eve 85'. Had a million $ stage show. Started with an 8' crystal ball filled with smoke that changed to his face😅. Shit loads of lazers and a 20' fire breathing dragon😮😊. Wuz in front moshing out. Lost my watch, my goody comb. My right Keds came off. Saw some kid with it so i reached thru the crowd to get it. he wouldn't let go so I yanked hard till I got it then pushed my way out to a clearing. Realized why he didn't want to give up the shoe...it wuz his left shoe 😊😊. I put it on and went home wearing 2 left shoes exact size and style 😊. Every concert after I wore lace up work boots. Good thing..next show wuz Judas Priest at the Tacoma Dome.. walked over broken glass last 100' before going thru security 😢.

B.B. King used to call it "beck and call" I believe, where he would sing a line of vocals and then play a lick on the guitar. Standard blues song structure.

This is my favourite era of Sabbath, musically (and the title track of my favourite album). Tony Iommi defines the band for me, but each vocalist does a lot to set the tone of the period, and every Dio-fronted band has a certain feel, this version of Sabbath included. It's like a single cone with scoops of your two favourite ice cream flavours. Yummy! Thanks Dorky!
