Black powder and compression
Спорт
Compressing black powder allows for more powder in the case, as well as improved combustion and accuracy. This video shows three ways you can use to compress black powder and how to make a drop tube stand.

You've demonstrated well a drop tube for BP cartridges, but I used used one to shoot BP competition in muzzloaders. Used a very long drop tube that reached the breach plug & extended above the muzzle. A funnel beyond the muzzle received the powder. Compression was achieved, of course, by the patched ball & ramrod. But the definitive & measurable advantage was that ALL of the powder was delivered where it should be & not along the bore stuck to the previous shot's fouling. Genuinely helped.
Extremely well made video, very good camera work, editing, CGI and shows the way drop tube helps improve powder settlement and other methods. Thanks for answering many questions and for taking the pains for making the great video.
Very good video. Well done. My only issue was operator error for borrowing the little woman's vibrating device. She frowned on that hugely.

AHAHAHAHA
The mechanical compression crushes the powder grains, changing their burning time. The drop tube seems to be the best method indeed. As effective as the press, while keeping the grain intact like the razor method.
Nice, Simple. , to the point , explanation of Compression. Nice drop set ups. Thanks
Most excellent. Thank you for posting
Wow! Fantastic video, Thank you.
Drop tube is a must, when i seat bullets i just use finger pressure to seat the bullet to the OAL length i need, you dont want to crush the powder or bridge over the powder stack. I get perfect results doing this . I also weigh my BP after getting an average of 10 volume measures and weighing those.
Very interesting. Thank you
If Kit Carson - Lewis & Clark were alive to see this video , they would laugh their asses off .
Top Video!
Very good video. Correct in all aspects.
so what if i measure 70 grains using a drop tube into my 70 grain measure device. since its measured by volume. I actually would get more now wouldnt i?
This is late, is there any benefit to a longer drop tube?
if the same powder charge is compressed a little, vs a lot, how does that affect the actual force behind the bullet? In other words, if the powder is compressed, does it behave (in shooting) the same as if it was just in contact with the bullet but otherwise uncompressed? Another concern I suppose is that powder that INITIALLY is in contact with the bullet can settle over time creating an air space which could be dangerous.

Very good question. I'll be watching for the answer

I know this is an older thread, but I'll answer it in the hopes it helps someone else who stumbles across it in their "recommended videos". With black powder, there must be some compression for proper burn, and more compression = cleaner and more complete burn. My 45-70 loads with the same amount of 2F powder and the same bullet leave less residue from each shot when the bullet is seated deeper in the case (more compression). If the black powder is even lightly compressed, it cannot settle, but if it not put in with a drop tube and compressed either with a die or the bullet, there is a chance it could settle and result in some pressure spikes...at a minimum it will shoot very "dirty". None of this applies to smokeless of course.

Two things; first, if you are not old enough to know what the insides of an old fashion coffee percolator look like, you should probably skip this, but, I don't even know what it's really called, But I would think it would be something like "Riser Tube, or riser pipe", But it seems like that would make a good drop tube, and be something lying around unused, or certainly could be purchased at Goodwill for two or three dollars. … Secondly, have you tried vibrating the shell AS the powder is being introduced as opposed to waiting until it's full? I would think that would assist the particles in migrating to the position and orientation that gravity wants them to be, which would also make a case for vibrating the shell WHILE applying pressure with a press.

No need to vibrate the case when using a compression die and card wad. I have loaded these for many years and use a drop tube, then on to the compression die. Depending on whether I am loading grease groove bullets or paper patched smooth bullets I will add a grease cookie (black powder lube disc) and another wad before seating the bullet.
Very nice,,,, I am just got a Spanish Rolling Block re-barreled in 45-70 and am trying to figure this out... I am A Skirmisher (www.n-ssa.org), and buy BP by the keg but the only cartridge I load so far is 44-40 for my Henry and Ballard (two different loads, a low 16 grain one for the Ballard to reduce the possible cracking of the cast iron receiver.) I am trying to figure this out for the 45-70.... for the 44-40 we use Grits as filler and this works great and my plan is to do the same here, even thought I have read negative things on forums, my experience is different.... My goal now is to figure out how much filler...

Easy my friend, if your normal 4570 load is for example a 70 grains of ffg rifle powder (black powder) and you want a reduced load....drop tube say 60 grains, compress the powder slightly with a thin over powder card wad, then add 10 grains of corn meal oe cream of wheat and pack it with an thin wad.
What is the drop tube made out of?

It's a brass loading funnel from Pedersoli: shop.davide-pedersoli.com/en/loading-accessories/1009-brass-loading-funnel-for-rifle-o-7.html

How to make a drop tube should be the title
These are chunks of coal. On a more 'microscopic' level.

Not really it is black powder, which is a physical combination( not a chemical combination) of saltpetre, fine charcoal and sulfer in a very specific combination, which is then slowly milled, wetted a bit then compressed (called corning) then broken up into various grain sizes. The granulations typically are from very fine fffg, fffg (pistol/ small rifle) ffg (rifle), and fg the corser, larger size for large caliber muskets and cannon.
Compressed powder increases much more the pressure peak than the velocity. It's better to increase the weight of powder than its compression. Totally stupid !
