Hey man, I had to drop a comment on your video, because I feel you would be overjoyed to know this. I am an IB student at Valencia High School in southern California, and one of the requirements to graduate and get my IB diploma is I am enrolled in a philosophy class called Theory of Knowledge. In this class we have just a crazy amount of debates, class discussions, and Socratic seminars tackling world problems and unsolved issues and theories such as Nature vs. Nurture or capital punishment or even politics (it gets pretty heated). Well, I introduced the topic of AI and connected it to Black Mirror where I used a segment from your "White Christmas" analysis in an impromptu, on the spot, presentation to my class to explain cookies and the moral, ethical, and ideological constraints of such a device/concept. Point is I got a class of about 36 Juniors and Seniors ranging from 16-18 years old and even my teacher to get in on this debate and we absolutely loved your video. Not only that, but literally about a hundred and fifty or so kids, all one of the 6 Theory of Knowledge periods, had this debate and watched your video. So just thought you might want to know how much people, especially me, appreciate the content you put out! We should get in contact and I could tell you more, I definitely plan on sharing some of your videos to my period and applying different controversial Black Mirror topics in the future! Much love from the IB class of 2019-2020!!

It's not just propaganda, iRazenrak. They are persecuted on their specific deficiencies and/or other abnormalities. The people in power nevertheless fail to see the strengths of individuals. They could've utilized people's strengths and limited people on their weaknesses, yet they divided them and either made them "good" or "bad".

I’m surprised no one is talking about how the roach saved Stripe. This shows that they are more human and empathic than those who discriminate against them. Instead of killing him, or seeking revenge, the roaches only want to disable the soldiers’ Mass. I loved that about the plot, it shows that just because they have supposed biological inferiorities, they are just as human as everyone else.

Big pops Dude why would they kill them. Even if they wanted to they need him cause he knows the military routes and be a rat from the inside and feed information. And they also know they are not aware they are killing other humans but monsters so in fact the person they would kill if they were to kill him would be an innocent soldier who couldn’t kill a human being.

It probably goes on a case by case basis. This was a woman who was just saved by him. Another person might just kill him. Also just disabling Mass might be a strategic move. If they kill soldiers they show that they are the enemy and just fuel the Military's narrative. But if they can disable the illusion for enough soldiers they might rebel or at least stop killing. They probably don't know the manipulation and mental torture the military uses to make sure that doesn't happen.

Tons of people sign up for the job thinking they're going to be firefighters because the job title has "Fire" in it, and sign their lives away for years without knowing anything about the military or the job they chose....think about that for a minute. They made all these claims and I joined like an idiot cause I was homeless and didn't want to go to a shelter. Loved this episode. The whole otherisation reminded me of how people talk about terrorism. Like they are cockroaches that just need to be stamped out, and inhuman and such. And we see what good that has done, since 9/11 the approach of stomping out terrorism has just spread it further, you can't kill an idea. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending or sympathizing with terrorists, but when we label people terrorists (which is a subjective term btw, technically any violence for political gain is terrorism) we instantly say that killing them is justified. Obviously humans aren't inherently fans of killing eachother, so you have to otherise the enemy. One of the most thought provoking episodes I thought.

  • @AnArchyRulzz

    @AnArchyRulzz

    6 жыл бұрын

Indeed, even the question he asks at the end is subjective. Is violence ever justified? Well there are a lot of people out there who do believe that violence is okay if it is for the "greater good." And the greater good is obviously subjective too. Terrorists believe they are fighting for the greater good, so do the people fighting them. This episode also seemed to deal with the greater good concept by talking about future generations and how the roaches had to be wiped out to save humanity.

Well I definitely would have done the same thing he did in this episode. Being tortured by those images for the rest of my life? Fuck that. At least if I get my memory wiped I can forget that shit. It also brings up issues of implied consent if people can't remember giving consent. I understand why he took that option. I guess it is similar to most people who go to war, they are haunted by their killings for the rest of their lives and have nightmares and PTSD etc.

The fact that he was crying in the end and the image of the girl of his dream looked very unfocused, hints that even though he chose to continue to work for the military he still haunted from his past and mass didn’t completely erase his memories.

I love that religion is portrayed positively when compared to technology here. Religious doctrine here frees the mind (rather than limiting it), inculcates compassion and dignity (instead of hatred and disgust), and calls for peace and reconciliation (rather than war and extermination). It made me seriously consider how both religion and technology can be used and misused. The character of Hiediger is possibly modeled after Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

i think this was the most emotional black mirror episode for me. the fact that they dehumanized the enemy to make the killing easier is just chilling. when stripe's memories were replayed without the filter i started sobbing. i tried to put myself in his position and while i was hoping he would say no to reinstalling the MASS, i think i would too if i was in his place. how does one live with all the killing for the rest of their life? the MASS certainly makes it easier for veterans but at what cost... outstanding episode

wild_world Violence doesn't necessarily mean murder. You can and should defend with non-lethal violence if possible. And if you do kill someone in self-defense it's not considered murder so you're not a murderer. Like a close family member of mine shot her fiancé/father of her oldest in the face back when I was a kid - he'd already broken into her new place and beaten her and then came at her with a knife. No one considers her a murderer; she wasn't even arrested/charged with anything.

After watching many of these videos and reading through comments, im disappointed in how much goes over our heads. The show plays a perfect sense of irony of what humans perceive and how we function as a society. Yes they are “made up”, and exaggerated, but these are truths about our world, and yet this show is “entertainment”. People are manipulated and abused, raped and murdered everyday. This shows us our bad decisions and we need to change that mindset and break away what society tells us.

My point of view is that people don’t really care about a problem, unless it’s in front of their faces. It’s hard to sympathize with a stranger on the other side of the world, when all you can do is try to imagine what their going through, their pain, their struggles, their lifestyles, etc., while only being able to understand with what’s given to us, and being limited to such things as the Internet or word of mouth, which isn’t always reliable, because of false info, or sometimes people or news outlets manipulating or twisting stories, and etc. Bad stuff happens every single day, I think a lot of people get that, but again people become desensitized to it, whether they like it or not, and the reality of it doesn’t really hit people, unless it’s of course right in front of us, or its someone close to us, because we see so many stories and violence played out in movies, tv shows, games, or books every single day, that actual problems in reality don’t seem real to us, even though we’re told it is, and also why people can laugh or joke or troll about it, so yea.

From the first minutes, I knew this was going to be the most depressing Black Mirror episode ever, and it only got worse. The only uplifting moment was the information that most soldiers in the world wars wouldn't actually fire their weapons or would intentionally aim above the other soldiers' heads. A little faith in humankind restored. And no, the wars wouldn't have been over quicker with more kills, since there was a constant supply of more soldiers to replace them. Very interesting that the kill rate in Vietnam went from around 10 to 15 percent to 85. Was it all drugs?

Something must have happened to his wife(?) but that information isn’t given to us, we only know that when he returns home his house is damaged and not like it used to be, his wife is also gone, you can also see his eyes are silver like in “the entire history of you” when they look back at their memories through their eyes, it might be linking the episodes which is something black mirror does a lot, if he is just seeing what once happened he might be mourning over the loss of his wife

the house isn't really his house, just a place the military gave him to go because that is the typical "returning home from the military" scenario and the girlfriend isn't real, just in his mind which they created using his "mass" and he has tears streaming his face because again that is the typical emotional scene of man returning home to his lady from war or whatever so it is just to signify the meaning we give to those events

Javier Sánchez Panduro "self-defence" is an excuse many people run to, but it's still just more violence and more pain. There's really no point to it in my view. There are other ways to fight violence, that's why we have legal systems. That being said, I still think I'd personally resort to violence in the face of an attack but that's basic human instinct. We as a species need to get past that instinct. If you think about it, all nearly all conflicts are the result of that basic instinct triggered by fear of our own kind. I'm not sure if what I said made sense but close enough I guess.

Derick Gabrillo What kind of pseudo intellectual bullshit is this. Get over the human compulsion for “self defence”. You do realise that there will ALWAYS be people who are psychopaths (hell even conflicts of interest can persuade people to do terrible things) who will kill you if you get the chance. So if they attack you propose we just die then? If you tolerate the intolerant then tolerance will end, it’s a paradox but that’s how the real world works. Instead of teaching people that the highest virtue is passiveness and frankly being a pussy, we should teach them to fight evil and love good. That’s the easy part, the hard part is figuring out what’s what but that’s the human experience.

  • @derickgabrillo1579

MrKmas508 Well, you're right, there will always be psychos but you need to understand that it's not really much of a choice for most of them because well, they're psychos. You can't really blame them since their thinking processes are impeded by their condition. And yes humans can be easily persuaded to commit horrific acts and find was to justify them but that's all the more reason to try to overcome this basic human instinct to react violently when a threat is perceived in OUR OWN species. With that mentality we won't last more than a couple of centuries. All it takes is one trigger happy idiot on the button who's blinded by fear.

see no its not an absolute like that. you can use that itself to justify the events that happen in men against fire. the "roaches" supposedly had higher rates of committing crime, thusly you could reason that more "roaches" exist, more crime, more crime more violence, kill all the "roaches". you can never boil down human lives to a simple yes or no kill or not be killed, it has to be entirely subjective

hooked on a theevan but as I said the "roaches" could be helped and their disabilities could be mitigated. Extermination is the first thought when dealing with a disease but as you said (more or less) human lives cannot be put on the same level as their inperfections. Voilence is not the answer here because these "roaches" have yet to anything wrong.

Media/politics puts a lense over our eyes to see what they want us to see, not what we are supposed to see. Our reality is different from the reality they want us to have.

honestly I think that the short film "uncanny valley" captured this episode's concept very well before black mirror tried it. Possibly inspired this episode.

define self defense. if you stretch the definition of self defense, the actions taken in men against fire IS self defense. this is the issue. human lives cannot be boiled down to an objective rule.

For an act to be classified as self defense, it must be in response to a human and voluntary act that is either current or imminent, and the damage caused by self defense can´t be unporportuanaly superior to what would have happned without self defense.
