It's also probably the first hint that they're not "really" in 1987 - the kid in the arcade says "it *was* the first game with two different endings" as if he's talking about the game as a historical artifact. I could be wrong about this, but: I know Bubble Bobble came out in 1986 in Japan, but I *think* it came out later in the US - most of the English language reviews are from *late* 1987. Yorkie seems to be familiar enough with the game that, if this really *was* '87, there's a really slim window of time that scene could be taking place in if it was real. Regardless, you can tell this episode was written by a guy who got his start as a video game critic. :)

I also think its telling that later when Yorkie goes looking for Kelly in 2002, she's there with the arcade guy playing a *Dancing Simulator* (DDR), and not actually on the dance floor.

sycoraxrock This episode, along with most BM episodes, if you watch them a second time you pick up on a lot of the subtext in the dialogue.... like, it's not obvious but you know something's more than it seems. I actually just started watching most of BM for the second time and I have even more appreciation for it's writing. I can't wait for the new season, so I can over think every little moment and try to figure out how it's gonna play out lol.

The ending actually made me really sad. They're at different points in their life - for Yorkie, this is really the beginning of her life. Kelly, on the other hand, is tired. She's had a long, full life of love and heartbreak. It felt like it would be right for her to go, either to be with her husband and daughter or just to finally be "done". For Yorkie, this was the opportunity to finally *live* and that meant San Junipero was definitely the right choice for her. Plus, being trapped in her own mind like that for the majority of her life, I feel like Yorkie was mentally much younger than Kelly. Yet at the same time, I don't know that the alternative ending (Kelly not staying with Yorkie) would have felt right either.

You totally miss the line about the video game having "two different endings, depending on if you choose one player or two player", which can mean that Kelly could either be buried with her family, or she can stay with Yorkie. And the ending showed Yorkie alone, then having Kelly show up.

San Junipero is a happy Dystopia or a sad Utopia. It's a contradiction for so many reasons. Mainly because Yorkie is a "girl" who for the first time experiences love. But she experiences love in her technology form not in her human form. That's the sad part. Life wasn't fair to her & in this universe, she's finally free. Able to walk, run, talk, dance, feel through technology. Which is amazing and terrifying at the same time. Even though Yorkie and Kelly don't possess a body, their feelings are presented as real as can be. They can enjoy "the miracle of living" in their afterlife. SJ has that bitter sweet vibe throughout. It depends on how you see it. It's a happy ending for the unfortunate ones. And heaven can be any place on earth or earth alike place, only if love comes first (:

Its her brain/mind/heart that is loving in the both human and in the VR. So she is still feeling the emotions and they are still equally real. My contradiction starts from the point when the body dies and they can still feel those emotions. I can agree that memories can be stored, its difficult to understand storing of consciousness but its nearly impossible for me to understand how emotions are executed because they are taking place because of chemicals and hormones being controlled in our body

But what's the difference in doing it in her human form, as opposed to the digital. Her consciousness is the same, and her brain experiences the same reactions she normally would. The simulation simulates the physical. I believe it's also an important question in relation to the episode. What's real and what's not? How do you define it? If it feels real, it must be real, and even if you do not define it that way, it doesn't matter - it will still feel real. Cogito Ergo Sum.

  • @numerical25

There are applications Today that simulate neural networks. But this type of technology will be a long way off. What we see in this episode will come when we are able to create robots with simulated emotions. In computer Science this period in time is called the IT singularity for those interested in knowing about this. But not only will we have to Simulate emotions, but vision, motors and sensors as well. What I am most afraid of about technology like this is bugs and glitches. Even today, we can simulate worlds with video games but how often do games crashe, or we slip through a wall and get stuck there, or fall through the floor and literally fall forever. Almost like Vanilla sky. There would have to be constant GM's in the simulation answering to people "Tech Support!!!" when or if something goes wrong.

I understand why so many people think San Junipero stands out due to its 'upbeat' ending, but I can also see how very Black Mirror it actually is. Kelly's speech about her commitment to her husband who chose not to cross over to San Junipero and how their daughter never got the option to cross over was really touching, and also what I think makes the episode so depressing in a way. Though Kelly initially rejects San Junipero for favor of going wherever her family are, she ends up choosing the artificial reality anyway. You could interpret this as society choosing to worship and have faith in technology over religion nowadays, and how all these people in San Junipero are just walking ghosts forever, little lights on a wall of memory sticks. Are their minds actually in San Junipero, or is this just like in Be Right Back- an imprint of who they were based on collected information about them, essentially just making them data acting out who they were. Yes, it's upbeat in its own way, but it always made me quite sad that all these people chose a fake, never ending world. The comment on how people were committing suicide just for early access to San Junipero further shows how obsessed people are with technology. We're getting too good at it, and if a simulation like San Junipero ever does exist, what is life worth anymore? What is pain, and death, worth, when we can just...not.

This is exactly what I thought. Kelly decides to reject faith and the belief of the human soul. So if there is a true chance at the after life she has symbolically rejected it and doomed her chance at seeing her husband and daughter again. The fact still remains that if there is an after life Kelly will still be reunited with her husband and daughter. Her cookie would be in the simulation at the same time and there would be two Kellys.

The writers of Doctor Who should take note on how to write gay and lesbian people properly. Could you image if this was written by Steven Moffat? She'd probably start off by telling that kid at beginning "No I don't want to play that arcade game with you, I'm not into BOYS" and saying to Kelly "I don't suppose you know any LESBIANS around here, because I would sure like to find one *nudge nudge wink wink*" before reaffirming her sexuality throughout the entire rest of the episode...

I think it's also interesting how Kellys religious views influenced her struggle with staying in San Junipero. What if real heaven did exist? Did she in fact choose a simulated heaven over the real heaven in which she could reunite with her family, that could even be waiting for her? But then comes the question of what part of you would go to real heaven anyway, if it's the mind, exactly like San Junipero, you could assume that San Junipero overtook her mind first, before real heaven did. If it's the soul that's moved, then what? Maybe there are in fact 2 versions of you and the one in San Junipero is simply a clone of one's consciousnesses, not the real you.

What if you have mental disorder or someone is born with it, does he or she has the same soul as I do... Basically I would rather belive in technology as our collective achievement that would give as an actual heaven.

There are so many details to pull from this episode. Right at the start there is a billboard for The Lost Boys. A movie about vampires who are immortal and remain young forever. The while episode is full of subtle details. I like how you analysed all the songs used too. Although Clint Mansells OST for the episode is incredible. This episode actually made me excited about the future not scared for it like all the ither episodes haha.

Perhaps I'm alone in this but I did find the ending of the episode a little bit pessimistic/unsettling. They cut off the scene of the couple having a great time in San Junipero, to a shot of their consciousnesses (what essentially looks like a junk drive) being uploaded into a large computer system. Somewhat to indicate that their happiness is a high tech illusion. Or even deeper, that the human mind can be manipulated and programmed like a machine. On another topic, I talked to my sister about this, one thing I find interesting is that the technology is similar to another episode "White Christmas". So I'm wondering if separating consciousness is a feasible concept or if Yorkie and Kelly in San Junipero (after "crossing over") are really just mindless digital simulations of Yorkie and Kelly when they were alive, "digital ghosts".

You only exist in your brain, and your sensory organs get information from the outside world and interprets in your head. Everything you see and hear is created in your head. You don’t actually interact with reality. It would be no different than being inside a hard drive instead of a brain.

This episode gives me existential melancholy, it's a strange ending. They're dead but not; if their minds in their entirety really are in those capsules connected to the San Junipero "server", then technically they could be put back into the real world if these were placed into an artificial bodies, making the ritual of their real world burial seem meaningless. An upbeat way to think of their funeral is a metamorphosis, the shedding of their organic skin while they live as a new form. Although, I already think of death in general as a very long metamorphosis

umm ... probably due to time constrain, the story did not go deeper into the struggle between one's religious beliefs about the afterlife Vs the artificial man made afterlife... It seems the husband chosing not to try out the artificial afterlife may also be due to his belief in the traditional afterlife, maybe he believes the dead daughter might be waiting for him in THAT non-artificial type of traditional afterlief .... which makes it difficult for the wife who has found a new love and has to chose between which one to follow, the old love vs the new love, the traditional afterlife or the artificial afterlife ... The show could have fleshed out this struggle more but its only lightly touched upon when she says that she does not believe in the traditional afterlife ....

This episode really shows there’s no good outcome of death. You could exist in paradise for eternity, but it’s intimidating how unimaginable eternity really is. Paradise would also seem to be too boring to go on forever, as many of the most important points in life are flaws and mistakes. There’d be no point in taking risks or improving yourself and the rest of the world if there’s no repercussions to your actions. But eternal darkness is just as hard to picture, and believing in something as positive as paradise is much easier to swallow in comparison to losing everything you’ve made during life. I couldn’t sleep the whole night after watching this episode, gave me one hell of an existential crisis.

LOL, I was going to post this and a couple other similar tidbits (ie INXS is pronounced “In Excess” which shocked me that someone wouldnt know this - that’s when I realized the painfully obvious “crap, its because I’m (getting to be?) an old geezer that I recognized these and the narrator didnt.” Glad you posted! I found this episode profoundly moving to the extent that I hope there’s a San Junipero equivalent or better (actual biological rejuvenation coupled with Simulations would be the way to go IMO - young and healthy again for the real world but plenty of sims that will it will be like deciding which web site or Netflix/Disney +/Hulu/Prime/etc show I watch next) before its gets close to…”my time”. I watch San Junipero every now and then as I graduated High School in 87 and related to more than just the songs which are fantastic. It’s nice and uplifting and could so easily have gone dark - which I fully expect Black Mirror to do in a sequel if not necessarily a direct San Junipero sequel, dealing with the concept of a soul and if that’s actually us in the SIM, could a glitch cause someone to get stuck in the sim and wake up in the real world…what happens when they go back in?Doppleganger? Twin? Does someone get wiped? End of the world power failure? Upgraded system where in the even further future sim people can download into sim Bodies with direct feeds from the real world for all the senses just like life…do they make you work in the SIM (no reason real world stuff cant be worked on…Can you communicate with the outside world? So many questions…could be a whole series of multiple seasons on this topic alone!

Exactly. I just finished it today and to mw it's almost like picking one of your favorite games, making it hyper realistic and living there "forever". It's almost like if you lived in GTAV without the violence, food taste like nothing and you always respawn. It's intriguing and terrifying at the same time. You know eventually, you'll get tired of it and can "unplug" whenever you want but that's all there is. I wonder if they upgrade it and if they test it extensively to make sure there aren't any bugs and or glithes which can be fun to find sometimes but in this case, you can't restart the thing or that may be it forever.

I feel it would be interesting to have a bit of a look to what that place would be like in 100, 500 or even 1000 years time. People can barely hold relationships together for 50 years and in a relatively confined place that they would be spending an indefinite amount of years in I can't help but think that it would become unbearable. If they mentioned in the episode that they plan on expanding this afterlife it would be a more comfortable thought, but without jobs, goals, worries, or something to look forward to, life tends to send you a bit crazy.

Bro...your analytic, detail oriented review on this is amazing, wow. The way you point out so many aspects and tie them to the story line is impressive. It's the best black mirror episode in my opinion, and your review helps me make sense of it...thanks!

Humans have always thought physical death wasn't the end. Sure not everyone, myself included but who's tho say it isn't? And if it isn't why can't people be happy in what ever comes next whether it be natural or man made.

+L.T C. We know that our brain is the host to our mind. We know that if we physically interfere with the brain, we can induce emotions, destroy memories and change a persons personalty permanently. So one would conclude that the physical world is all there is. And so physical death is the end. There isn't anything after death, for humans or any other species on earth, be they trees, ants or orangutans.

What I'm saying is when they were both alive and in the sim, their brains were connected to the machine somehow so they felt the stimulation, it was real to them, now that they're dead, there's no one left to stimulate. There's no one gaining any pleasure from being connected to the simulation, it's just a copy of them left in San Junipero to help round out the universe. Dead people don't feel anything, so I can't really see it as a happy ending. I can only see this benefiting a person as long as their brain is alive, after that's there's no point.

I definitely believe the geeky dude who hits on Yorkie at the Arcade is AI and was never human. How else does he show up playing the arcade Dance Dance Revolution with Kelly in the 2000's? He is there as a form of tech support. He was also the first person to try and make Yorkie comfortable. The odds of him being in "multiple times" are extremely improbable.

The face value ending is happy but the implication is sad and the resolve disturbing. I think it works on many levels but the one part that struck me the most was how a huge effort to experience a short moment of intimacy (Kelly driving to meet and touch Yorkie in her coma) was so much more intense than an eternity of ecstacy(dancing/sex/beaches etc.) I don't know if they were trying to express this profound sentiment but that's what I took.

It is kinda scary knowing they uploaded their consciousness to the “cloud” and have to live like that forever...: I wouldn’t want to live forever that sounds stupid when I die I want to be just that... dead.. not in a computer simulation. Even if I was at my absolute prime for eternity I would be bored after a while.. so it’s kinda bittersweet for me tbh. 🤷‍♀️The Ashley O episode ending is the least depressing because she got to be free from her evil aunt and be herself and express her true feelings thru her music.. plus I love the Mickey Mouse references with the mouse killers

I don't know if such a system would truly work We know the true value of happiness because we've seen sadness as a part of everyday life, we know what it is to relax because we've been stressed. But- being in San Junipero is like being a constant state of joy till the point that the feeling won't't have any real value to the individual- almost like being on a holiday forever.

at first i was super confused as to why this episode was a part of black mirror bc it takes place in the past and the episode description says "seems to defy the laws of space and time" and i read that and thought this was going to be dealing with the supernatural (and as the little mentions of death kept popping up before the flashback to reality, i was very confused as to why Netflix didn't release this apart from the black mirror world and just as its own little "mini-movie" (i guess) but after the big reveal, everything started to make sense)
