I like how you pointed out that Little Richard and Prince both went on to disavow homosexuality, and ultimately queerness. To my young queer brothers and sisters, I ask that you don’t shove down your convictions or rebel against your convictions that you were raised with. Truly take the time to construct your own ideals, morality, and contend with your own religious faith. Find out why you believe what you believe and live from your own values. If you don’t, the internalized religiosity and homophobia will catch up with you in your old age.

or you can just be wrong - People believe and follow a million wrong things all the time. Something can be great for you and hurt society or great for society and hurt you. Its just odd you want society to conform to you with zero interest for society but your right as your interests gain in power in society it will conform more like its doing now which also hurts other groups. Thats not a personal thing or anti- whatever or an attack on your message but to point out Your beliefs and values right or wrong can hurt you or others. Living whatever beliefs you have , have a cost rightly or wrongly.

Fantastic video essay; you’ve got a real talent for this. We definitely need more Black Queer voices in this space.

This was so well put, and I found that I relate to a lot of the feeling of needing to pass as cis, dispite being nonbinary myself.

You touched on many aspects of black boyhood that I experienced myself. Insofar as the masculine behaviors, I see how we are conditioned from so early an age. I enjoyed all the history that you put into the video; it gave a lot of context and introduced me to information I hadn't known. The video was well edited too. Thanks for sharing this.

As an out, proud, 43 year old, gay Black man, I can identify with most of the commentary here. I take issue with the idea that there is something wrong with presenting in a “traditionally masculine” way or that it is an act just to fit in. As gay as I am, I’ve always just “passed for straight.” It’s not an act for some guys. While some guys might desire to feel pretty sometimes, what about the gay man who genuinely can’t conceive of himself as pretty. There should be room for all of us. The “masculine acting” projection needs a rest.

I understand the use of “AMABs” as a general category, but I also think it’s faulty. This video talked about AMABs who navigate the world as men, which is fine, but I think another term might have been better? Since this video did not really include trans women. I think that term can lead to some over-generalizations of experiences. Not everyone who has the historical experience of being assigned male at their birth, can be pooled together in a common experience of gender. The fact that this video didn’t discuss any trans women, is proof of this.

....this isn't a video about trans women, because I'm not a trans woman. I wouldn't dare speak on a perspective I don't live. It's specifically about black male masculinity and stepping away from stigma. But, if it'll help your little self righteous heart. Part 2 of the series does involve trans women. It drops on the 28th of march

I understand and agree, I’m nonbinary and always internally id as such… so none of it (both this video and the next) applied to me… other than a description of people I’m in community with. But I think overall the message(s) was clear… :-/

@@ABERESEARCHthe original comment was being critical of your use of particular language that is usually used by the trans community. As a fellow member of a marginalized community, I'm sure you understand that some words being co-opted and used by other people outside of your community can come off as off putting. You, as a creator, have every right to disagree and explain yourself or not explain yourself and keep it moving, but this response is unnecessarily hostile and belittling to someone who wasn't even being unkind to you. "your little self righteous heart?" What about the request for you to consider using different language is self righteous? They aren't demanding, virtue signaling, or attacking you as an individual or a creator.
