Great encounter Fel, you came across as humble and friendly, great way to blend in with the locals. You are right, 'hǎo níu' = 好牛 means 好棒 or 'great'. This is because cow/bull symbolises strength. Duō xué 多学 means to learn more in Mandarin, it's different to 'dor che' which is Cantonese for 'thank you'.

I am retired Army and I have traveled to at least 42 states out of the 50 in the continental US and at least 44 countries. I speak 5 languages fluently and I know 4 others semi. It's been my experience that even when you don't know the language "properly" the natives of that country will still applaud and help you because you have made and attempt to understand their language and communicate with them in their native tongue and even they know that it's not an easy language for a foreigner to learn and/or understand. Once you get over so many humps you will find that there is more that brings us together than keeps us apart. FOOD is definitely another thing! Sometimes to representbus in a good might, also means to be awarebif being patronized. Or treated with absuttle firm of racism. Have you ever looked at another human being the same way some are looking at him? OH my goodness,_"the woman even said she has never spoken to a black person, although she's seen them walk by, but she's never spoken to "one if them" as she said, "Because They Might Hit Her", now what do you think that's about? Do you think she feels the sane about a person from Norway, or who is white?? Hmmm. Being aware is also about representing our people in a good light. Not in the way that some night think if you, but in a way where we recognize what racism kiiks like in its many formats so we can now how to react in a self respectful manner, and move on.

Not every country treats black people like this. Our experience is that only a handful of countries do. There are countries like Brazil and the USA that even with great population of black people are treated as second class citizens. Propaganda works. Many countries use stereotypes to degrade a people and we black people have always been at the receiving end of it. It is refreshing and heartworming to see how chinese people treat black people in general. That is until the haters propagate falsehoods and scare people into mistrust.

Chinese people are usually friendly, unless you did something they don't like, or approach them with unwanted attitudes. If someone don't like you, mostly they may spill some words and walk away or just ignore you. No need to worry about violence, that rarely happens unless you did something really bad or offensive. Be respectful, just as how you treat another human beings, you will be fine.

I've travelled to China several times for the past 15y, for both holidays and work purposes, and even though I don't speak mandarin, if you make the effort of learning basic sentences (order food, saying where you're from, simple stuff) and greetings, people there where always super nice and curious. And if you like History, you've got 2000+ years of incredible culture to discover! The CCP are not representing the actual people at all, you need to see through the human perspective, not political and you will get to love the real China. I've often read comments from Americans saying like "even for a million bucks I'll never set afoot in China" which I find terribly stupid...

I love seeing this! As an American, we are sorta brainwashed to view Chinese people in a negative light, so when I was there I was pretty uncomfortable, but when I needed help finding my way, people (especially older people) were super nice to me, and helpful and tried really hard to help me even though there was a clear language barrier. I've been told by some Chinese American friends that Chinese people can be pretty racist against Black people, and though this may be true, I know from experience that most people are good people and have just been given bad information. Just like how we Americans are literally trained by the media to see Chinese people negatively.
