Black Diamond Presents: RetroModern-Part 2: Blood Meridian

Спорт

Follow BD athlete Sam Elias and talented setter, comp climber and all-around badass Morgan Tadje as they rebolt and equip the classic testpiece Blood Meridian in Ibex, Utah.
“There’s a caretaking that needs to happen now with old routes,” explains BD athlete Sam Elias. And that’s where this story begins. But what transpires in this four-part series by Sam and documentary filmmaker Mike Call goes deeper than the new bolts drilled into stone. Through the resurrection of classic, historic routes, a meaningful, impactful connection is made between old and new generations. This is RetroModern, a series breathing new life into the storied past and bright future of climbing.

We understand and acknowledge the sensitive topic of safety while bolting and climbing. This is not instructional content, and we respect the decisions made by experts in their field, like Sam Elias, who have dedicated their entire lives to climbing. This was made to entertain and inspire. Thank you.

Well Part 2 made a difference. Nice to see the wave bolts go in and the retrofit. For those who think that you can just put bolts in rock, and you will get a climb out of it. Just not the case, it takes a lot more vision and dedication to actually set a climbing route. Not all are artists, but almost all, are art critic's. Well done BDEL.

Love this. I remember being at Ibex about 3 years ago and looking at the hold on Blood Meridian while going up the route on the fin next door. Never thought I'd get a chance to see anyone climbing it, given how remote and unloved Ibex tends to be. Very cool to see it finally getting some time in the spotlight. It's an amazing place to explore all the disciplines of rock climbing in one small ecological zone.

It bothers me when people don't keep a hand on the brake strand when using a grigri

Dudes gotta realize people outside climbing is a good thing. It’s just rock. We can set new routes. Climbing is the point.

This Sam dude talks too much crap for somebody that's bolting with no respirator and doesn't even know how to not burn his drill bits...

Inspire people to develop and climb without a helmet? Sounds dumb to me, especially coming from a company that sells helmets.

Most sport climbers in the world do not wear helmets. The falls are short and the likelihood very low that you will hit your head on a sport route. Its more dangerous driving to the crag then actually sport climbing. That said, driving are car while wear a motorbike helmet is also a lot safer and would save more lives than all the climbing helmets in the world. A little danger is ok.

It saddens me to see so much casual bolting these days. Iconic rock faces that took millions of years to form, being defaced without much thought. Wouldn't it be better to encourage the younger generations to take up Trad where all your protection can be removed when you're finished, leaving it pristine for someone else to use?
