Black Bears In Georgia: Sightings and Tips to Keep Them Moving

The black bear is a magnificent animal - and seeing one is a real treat! Beginning each Spring, it is possible that you may see a black bear in a non-traditional bear habitat location (such as your neighborhood). Here is how to keep that bear from "hanging around" and help them move back to more appropriate habitat.

Why are they migrating bud. What’s really going on ? We have seen black bears here in northern Alabama now. Over the last week 6 different sightings in the Huntsville Alabama area.

Not so much migrating as juvenile bears on their own for the 1st time trying to establish territory far enough from adult males who will kill them over territory.Who can blame them,I'd leave too.

Georgia’s black bears occur in three distinct regions, but bears may range over the entire state at times in search of food or a territory of their own. The best practice for homeowners is to make sure food and smellable items are put away where bears can’t get to them to encourage bears to keep moving until they reach more suitable habitat. Their area has been taken over by buildings and housing and they are looking for places to survive.... It's that simple

Ok,I live on the edge of the Chattahoochee national forest and have bears cut through my property all the time...no food here and a very large loud indoor dog ,they hear her and leave. So what can be done about people in "gated community's"like Coosawattee River resort where feeding of deer, bear and what ever comes to the piles of corn, apples ect left out every night? I had to bite my tongue at a relatives new vacation home watching deer eat piles of corn in the back yard.Seems like law should apply to everyone regardless of income level or neighborhood.Sorry about the rant ...just saying!

Wildlife watching is a common hobby. During the spring and summer in bear country, we advise all homeowners to bring in any food and smellable items. This includes bird feeders, other wildlife feeders, and even items such as grills and pet food. Keeping food attractants out of the yard helps keep human/bear conflicts at a minimum, so thank you for keeping up your property so that bears will keep moving until they find more suitable habitat!

Here as well. My neighbors actively feed bears and gloat about it. They damage our property and come on porches looking for food bc of neighbors actions.
