BJJ Vs. Kidnapper (More to the Story)

Спорт

Two things that we learn from this incredible update: 1) Just because violence is justifiable doesn’t mean it’s necessary, and 2) We never really know what causes people to behave the way they do.
Thank you Brian Kemsley for showing us the way.

Amazing story! Just because you may be a practioner of a martial art doesn't mean you have to brutalize your opponent. And Jiu-jitsu is the best way to end a conflict safely with no one getting seriously hurt. Show kindness, it will have a long-lasting, life changing effect than trying to embarrass someone by knocking them out.

Subway guy was only applying choke when the other guy was struggling. Guy was drugged and erratic and probably died from drugs/ heart attack not the choke. The trial is ongoing let’s wait for evidence under oath before calling that guy a killer.

Oh ok… “only applying when” So he was only squeezing then? But his bicep and forearm were still pressed against his Carotid arteries right? So the guy kept passing out and stopping struggling because of lack of blood to the brain but the guy who choked him stopped squeezing? Did he let go of his neck? No? You’re an idiot… how you git 30 odd likes for you’re little political statement without someone from the jiu jitsu community pulling you up on that. Is beyond me.

The more I learn about people the more I learn that many times there are reasons for why we are the way we are and many times its not our fault. I have my boys in jiujitsu at a Gracie center. They're in different classes so we're there 2 hours a night, 3 days a week. Some people are surprised and say they couldn't do that but I really love watching them to jiujitsu. It's nice to see them develop skills and confidence and hear all of the beautiful encouraging words that come out of the instructors. They're kind and fair but treat the children with seriousness and also demand respect and not letting the children mess around as it's only them and the other kids who miss out when they're not paying attention and being disruptive. When my son wants to practice with me it makes my heart swell with pride. It's one thing to see kids practice on each other but when he does it with me I end up feeling bruised. It's amazing, I have no doubt in my mind that my 8yo child could fend off a much older child or even a young adult. It's funny because the moves don't even hurt unless you resist. So that's where the magic is I think. When you show a child that they can be so powerful and so adept at defending themselves without even breaking a sweat, that they know secrets not everyone else does. That they don't have to swing their fists around to get their points across. It's very empowering and as a parent it's so beautiful to see. My boys love Gracie's, the games, their instructors, the other kids there. My two would go 5 times a week if they could. I'm sure they're just waiting until they're invited to black belt club.

The ability to essentially nullify a situation with BJJ is actually so amazing. You can, as a reasonably trained white belt even, just make sure that no one will get hurt. I once held a very close friend in spider guard for almost an hour because they were having a bad trip on some edibles. My friend was just afraid of intrusive thoughts and hurting themselves and they had a sweater on, so I just put them in spider guard for an hour. I am actually a pretty good striker myself, but that is useless in helping my friend. I've been saying that law enforcement should all be at like a blue belt level. Its a lot of training but imagine how much less danger there would be.

I would like to say as a practicioner of bjj that this man showed the upmost control and mental awareness. I think this video also touches on several things and in no particular order but all of equal importance. Number one is that mental health not only gets underdiagnosed but it also gets overlooked or even glossed over. So many people are in denial about mental disease, defects, and disorders. As someone on the spectrum of austism I've had my share of struggles and issues and that was on the mild side of things. I couldn't imagine what this man had to go through with his mother being murdered. As a psychology major I can say for sure that mental disease, disorders and defects are real and a lot more needs to be done to address this issue. Number two. This video also illustrates the problems with and in the law enforcement community depending on one the state, but also the resources available to law enforcement and the political landscape that they must navigate through.(It should not take the police 20 minutes to respond to a kidnapping call.) Let's be upfront here. Liberal and democratic states do not support their men and women in blue therefore they lack the man power and resources available to do their jobs effectively. The problem also lies in other parts of law enforcement from not just lack of funding and training although those are two huge elements that currently hurt the police's ability to do the jobs effectively. The problem also lies in lack of support from the public, but it also lies in staffing shortages nation wide, as well as a lack of proper and effective de escalation training but also effective training when it comes to the use of force continuim. As a prior corrections officer use of force training often puts emphasis on either maximum use of force such as using pepper spray or a stick or taser or gun, rather than using minimum use of force such as a basic double leg take down or a hip toss or even wrist control if someone is trying to take your weapon from you. As pointed out on this channel and in the literature so far, the number of use of force incidents have significantly decrease in police encounters simply from learning bjj. Imagine how much further down we could bring these numbers if cops were to be trained in other martial arts such as judo or wrestling for example. I hope this message can continue to spread and that we can raise more awareness on mental health and how seriously we should take it, the importance of learning martial arts for self defense, and supporting our men and women in blue so that they can have the resources necessary to do their jobs so that one day especially in states like new york we don't take 20 minutes to respond to a kidnapping call.

Bit of background. March 2021, is am recently retired and sitting at my home. The door bell rings and my wife goes to the door. No one there. A second later I see a guy in my backyard attempting to gain entrance to my screen enclosure. I open my patio door and ask him what he needed. He tells me he wants to see his sister. After a few seconds i stepped completely on to my patio and repeat to him his sister doesn’t live here. I open the screen to walk him off my property after few more seconds of exchanging words. At this point he picks up a small piece of a paver and throws it through my back window. At this point I know this is not going to be good and we start throwing air swings at each other. During this period I was able to move in on him by going under one of his failed punches. I hooked my left arm underneath his left arm and grab him with my right arm around his waist and brought him to the ground. At this point I’m in a similar position as Bryan and the other guy in the train. I have my legs wrapped him and I roll him over on our side because he kept trying to get his legs loose. The entire time I’m not letting go of the choke hold and I’m telling him to cool it. I would loosens my arm just a bit. He keeps telling me he wants in the house to see his sister. 10 minutes later the deputies arrived and they had to help me get untangled. He was arrested. Six days later I’m in the ER fighting for my life. Because our faces were inches apart I had gotten COVID. After dying twice in ER I was finally stabilized. But it took ten months to fully recover. I had learned to walk again. To feed myself because I lost all normal functions of my body. The videos that Gracie creates were so helpful. Coupled with my military basic hand to hand training from years ago I had the confidence to defend myself from this much younger guy. Thank you for the videos and continue success.
