BJJ, SPORT OR SELF-DEFENSE? LISTEN AND LEARN!

Спорт

For years I have been telling people and ranting against the idea that SPORT is the focus of REAL BJJ! People have looked to SPORT personalities pushed by people like Joe Rogan and the result are brain dead BJJ fans who miss the entire point of the art and why it was created. In this video Rickson Gracie speaks on BJJ and what the origin was.

I feel like "self defense" should be a redundant term in martial arts. I mean, isn't it a shame that someone will dedicate themselves to martial arts for years but can't defend themselves in the real world? Their art shouldn't be called martial then. My opinion.

if someone practices a competent martial art for years, they should be able to handle themselves (assuming there are no weapons/multiple attackers in play), but they may get surprised by a few things for sure

Great post...i always tell people google eye pokes in MMA and see big strong men crumble like never before....it is always funny...i remember you recently told a guy about pain compliance and how 4 cops struggle with one 180 pound drunk at Madison Square Garden....Sayf they wont hear ya until it is late...i saw a video recently where this guy had the other guy in a bbj side control yet the guy on the bottom was stabbing the bbj minded fighter with a pocket knife....keep up the videos and blessings Quick question can you do a video on wrist control and self defense? Do you feel it is necessary?

TheUmmahFightCamp In some of your pictures with knife attacks i see a strong hold of the attacking wrist or elbow( i relate it to a judoka pinning the wrist or elbow of an opponents gi to the opponents body to break kuzushi and throw) My question is if i am looking correctly how important is wrist and elbow control in a knife or fight scenario....i recently googled wrist control in wrestling and was surprised to see what seemed like "entry level wrist lock controls". I like to juxtapose my judo and wrestling and use the wrestling since it is the more practical weapon in a street fight....your thoughts?????

gasdemup: The wrist should be mainly a point of "climbing". The close you get to the torso, the more control you will have over the person in front of you.

TheUmmahFightCamp True....i was watching your video on blocks you did six years ago....how can one connect the idea of destabilizing balance with blocking and using wrist control as a climbing entrance....sort of like circular parrying to enter for a counter strike.... Talk soon

Fard Ali: I do not mention it, but I started Karriem in MMA. I put together his most successful shows and before our split we were going to put some grappling in the system. All crouch fighters did not grapple. Mylo was certainly the strongest fighter (and Otto Hill), but he did not teach the System classes in Newark. He taught from his house on occasion.

Where did this idea that self-defense isn't needed come from? seriously I would like to know, you've been around for a while Sayf; when did you start to notice this BS?.

I will post a video on that. Great idea. Stay tuned, but I have to say it started when personalities took the place of martial artists. Social media is also dominated by people who spar their high school buddies before having a "cold one". Real fighters do not like social media and have to be talked into it.

That makes sense, although I do know of a few of real fighters that are active on social media, one of them is Morio Higaonna and the other is an old Japanese-Brazilian Karate practitioner, he's really short maybe like 5'3 or 5'4 but his forearms are freaking huge and his fists look very dense, like he been training Iron Hand for a long time. If I send you videos of him can you tell me what you think, his videos are in Portuguese (I speak Spanish which very similar to Portuguese) but maybe you can observe his form and technique and see if you think he's legit. But I think he's legit, because I know that in Brazil real Karate schools aren't as scarce as they are in the U.S.

Randel Oland 901-ATT: I said "dominated" by a generation that does not really like to mix it up. Example, the best MMA fighters have their fights up by OTHER people. Many people who are legit DO NOT post their own material because they want know part of the nonsense. Some do of course.

It looks like nowadays martial arts have completely shifted from their original essence. Martial arts were designed for war and real fighting and not for competition games. All martial arts in the east came from war and the need to defend oneself and when they were brought to the west, westerners made them into competitive systems because here in the west we love to compete for our ego. In the east, on the other hand, they used to practice martial arts respecting their "arts" side of it. And today when we see it being practiced like in the east, we don't even understand why a practitioner is not competing, how ridiculous that is? We question how would Bruce Lee do in the ring or cage and discredit him for not competing when he trained to be a killer in the streets. How would samurai Miyamoto Musashi do in the cage? Is that not a ridiculous question? We should know for sure that he would slice any of these MMA guys with his katana in the streets before they could even blink. So how crazy it would be to discredit him for not competeing in sports?

One aspect of filipino martial arts in general was focusing on the stick/blade first..because in a war you fought with them. If you survived long enough it was only then that you graduated to learning hand to hand stuff

Lots of martial arts make this claim. BJJ has some pretty good legitimacy with early UFC showings. Muay Thai has had welterweights compete with heavy weights in open weight kickboxing tourneys with a pretty good degree of success too. Still though size is size and I have seen big ass blue belts give black belts more than they bargain for off strength alone.
