BJJ & Gym Business Questions with Chewy and Joe

Спорт

Are you a gym owner and want to ask Chewy or Joe a gym business related question? Please leave the questions below.
Recently I've been getting a ton of gym business related questions from BJJ coaches. But also from people running other niche gyms.
And I figured I'd do some videos on the topics from time to time.
But at the same time I wanted to introduce you to my business partner Joe.
In our business he covers many of my gaps and does things that I am terrible with and vice versa. We work together as a team on our gym to make it an awesome place to train.
We're a nearly 9000 sq ft facility with Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Boxing, Kickboxing, Weight lifting and more.
And the gym is packed everyday.
It wasn't always this way and we've learned a lot of stuff over the years that we hope to share with you.
If you're a gym owner or maybe want to be but have a question. Leave it in the comments or send it to me privately and Joe and I will answer it sometime in the future.

How important is social media marketing to your business, including Chewy's KZread channel? What is your most effective marketing for your gym?

Do you use the Zen planner? Do you require autodraft and absolutely no cash? Do you do PIF? (Pay in full)? How do you handle people who are late with payments but want to train? Do you give them a few days or absolutely no training without payments? Last, is it best to own a building for a gym or to rent somewhere to "avoid" taxes? And lastly Again, if partnering with someone is it best to go with a friend or someone who will just be all about the business? If any of them are too personal it's ok. Thank you for this!

Hey Chewy, just want to say I love your videos and I find they bring alot if value! One of the questions I have is in regards to a Syllabus, do you have a Syllabus at your school? And what are your views on having a Syllabus at your school. We have been trying to implement one and trying to find out where to begin. Thank you :)

I'm running a more traditional martial arts school and I have plenty of kids, teens, and young adults (early 20s) but I find it hard getting adults in. I'm 23 and we dont have many older adults so I get them not wanting to train with us. Any suggestions?

I have a question: How is it profitable to run a gym? This is a question I never really understood. The gym itself because it is such a big place usually must have a pretty high rent. And the gym members themelves pay around 60 dollars a month (at least where I am) for membership. So how many people do you need as members for the gym to be profitable? I mean, it's rare that you will see a 100 different people in the gym right? And if you had a 100 members, at least 50 of those are paying for the rent or something right?

I live in dallas and it’s about 150 a month anywhere to train. 10-20 people covers rent and most gyms probably have 40 members or so. I’m just a blue belt with a degree in math though, I don’t run a gym

Hi Chewy. When you start to run a gym, it is better to focus on just one martial art like jiu jitsu, or to offer more activities like jiu jitsu, yoga, MMA and weight training? Hope you can answer this.

Basically how did you get people into the gym in the very beginning? I'm just a student but I want more people to train with, not just for myself but I want the martial arts programs here to stay successful. I know so many people would love it if we could get them in the door. I like training with fighters but also love training with casual people just as much, helping each other grow. Any advice on this for students or coaches?

Hey guys. I'm a white belt about six months in and was just wondering what your perspective on hiring instructors for your gym would be. I've recently thought about my future with BJJ and realize that I would love being able to bring my new passion to as many people who want to learn it. I guess I'm wondering what your criteria would be to bring a new instructor into your gym. Are there any tips you could give to help get someone's foot in the door if they eventually want to teach?

3 questions... 1) I'm not disputing that it works because I can feel it, but what does turning the forearm on the American or kimura actually do that makes the hold more painful? The only muscle I can think of that it could affect at the shoulder is the biceps, which is already on slack and I doubt this motion is enough to change that given the angle of the elbow. 2) After listening to a video about someone thinking they weren't worthy of a belt/stripe, I was wondering is it taboo to ask your instructor why you or someone else did get a promotion?, and 3) and on topic for this post, what is the business decision you made that you look back on and think of as biggest mistake you made?

My idea is to hire a brown or black belt since at this point in time I am only a blue belt and begin to teach out of my garage. What are your thoughts? Any tips/advice?

I'm looking to open taekwondo gym within the next 5 years, I have plans to grow and possibly expand in to other martial arts inside the gym. How would you go about bringing another martial arts instructor in without running the risk of them decideing to steal your students and start there own school nearby? I have have seen This happen to schools in my area and it forced them to close there doors. I'm not so worried about the money but I am about the culture in the school and haveing to close the community

I've seen purple belt instructors. That being said, I'd much prefer a black belt who has competed at a high level

  • @meadgbe

    @meadgbe

Well, my head coach was a purple belt when I started six months ago, and has been promoted to a brown belt since then. We have 3 assistant coaches, who are basically also students, and they are 1 purple and 2 blue belts. And our club is winning medals at each competition that we register to (well, they, my first competition is next weekend so I can't say anything for myself haha). The guys are killers, for example, yesterday a black belt came in for a visit and couldn't finish one of the blue belts. He wrecked other ones of course, but this one no. So you can really get A LOT even from the lower levels, especially when you are a beginner. Realistically speaking, at least half of what I know by now came from my partners who are generally blue belts. And my coach opened the gym when she was a blue belt 4 years ago. So there's that. Hope it helps :)

My nephew (he's 11, one of the best in his class) has been struggling with a situation this week. He told me during a roll his instructor took him to the side and said "let him win". And now thinks he should just pretty much roll over and let his classmates beat him. I think the instructor might have a reason but seems to have a negative effect on my nephew. Can you give me some advice on this? Thank you for the vids and keep up the good work brother

When kids do BJJ , the rolls can be pretty one-sided. It's important for the bigger and more skilled kids to learn to not 100% dominate their training partners all the time. If they learn to let the newer/smaller kids achieve some good positions, they will have much more fun, and your nephew will improve faster because he is working his defensive skills too. Just my 2c.

Let them submit you a couple of times with no resistance and then spend an entire round doing nothing but dominating them with positioning. It usually gets the point across
