I think Lee doesn't get enough credit for being one of if not the greatest ball striker ever.

I got to follow him around in a group of 4players in an exhibition before the Legends tournament in '92. He and Chi Chi were playing a four-ball against Crenshaw and Kite. I'm telling you, he hit just about every single shot smack in the middle of the face. Every one was a control shot, every one less than full, and it had a sound when he hit it that was just...different. They used to say that about Hogan, you know. I was pretty good at the time (plus-2), but I was just in awe of the guy.

I love how all of Trevino's tips involve playing the ball back towards the middle of your stance. Considering he played EVERYTHING from a middle ball position, it makes sense he'd tell you to do that, as well. Trevino in a yellow shirt w/ matching yellow glove. I remember he used to say, "Yellow is for cowards." He certainly was no coward.

Watching Trevino vs. today's pros is liking an artist working a beautiful piece of exotic wood as opposed to watching a lathe turn wood into identical pieces.You get a finished product either way but one is fascinating while the other is like watching someone walking around a track.

When I was a kid who wanted Nicklaus to win every major, I didn't like Trevino because he beat the Golden Bear more than once in the big ones. Same for Tom Watson. But I eventually grew to admire Lee and Tom for their skill and their fearlessness in going head to head with Jack. Great champions all.

Trevino "blocked" the ball to the right. The club dropped to the inside on the downswing. His open stance is essentially setting up to the left to account for this ball flight.

Oh, and also (God, I hope he reads this--I ought to go see if he has a website): When I was 12, and we had moved to Texas from L.A., my dad flew back to take care of some business. So he's sitting in coach, turns to his right, and...there's Trevino, IN COACH. (You'll remember that by that time [1972], he was a U.S. and British Open champ.) So my dad says he's got a kid who plays, and they talk for a second, and Trevino grabs the ticket-holder thingy, writes a note, and signs it.

So that's the kind of guy he is. OK, just one more (not a personal story): Did you hear the one about how he was hitting balls at an event around 1972, and this lady is back there going "ooh! OHHH! WOW!" after every shot, and he's just hitting sort of garden-variety warmups? He turns to her and grins, says, "Hey, lady, I'm the U.S. Open champ--what'd you expect, ground balls?"

No doubt you're right--he's explaining the technique, makes the swing, then they cut to a separate shot where he's actually hitting it at the target.

@cockywatchman1976 1 knuckle is what's called a weak grip. That's fine if you want to make a swing in which you really release the club on the way down, a la Nicklaus. But it's not "better" than a strong grip (3 knuckles), and it's surely not a "perfect" grip. Perfect for YOU, perhaps, but certainly not perfect for everybody. I actually advocate it the least out of all 3 grip types (strong, neutral and weak).
@MrExplosiveTV13 жыл бұрын
@sweetswingin He stood open because he was a blocker. he NEVER released his hands. that's the reason he stood so open. the ONLY reason. Watson did not stand "10 to 15" degrees open unless he was hitting a freakin flare around some type of obstruction. Hogan?? com'on...
Can anybody explain why does Lee have such an open stance?
@marcusdolby114 жыл бұрын
I have to say there is NOOO tilt in Lees swing. Look at it.....This is much more of a low arc compact swing. Really he just traps it...... Not stack and tilt.

@cockywatchman1976 And, congrats on your round, I guess...but an 86 doesn't really prove that you know what's up with the golf swing. To say Trevino is "wrong" is just silly. The guy was one of the greatest ballstrikers in the history of golf. Seriously...if you haven't watched him in his prime, the guy could hit a golf ball like you wouldn't believe. He'd kick the ass of any "KZread Golf Pro." The guy won 6 major championships, for Pete's sake.
